Watch: Hernandez declares he will live up to promise of dying hair red and black

By Isak Möller - 23 May 2021, 23:49

Theo Hernandez was crucial in Milan’s encounter with Atalanta this evening as he won the first penalty, setting the Rossoneri up for the rest of the game. Now, with UCL in the bag, he has brought up an old promise of his.

In an interview with MilanTV earlier in the season, the French full-back promised to dye his hair red and black in the event of Champions League qualification. Since full-time, the fans have reminded him and he has responded.

“Calm down guys it will come,” he wrote as the caption for a photo of the interview, where the subtitles revealed his promise

#ACMilan and Simon Kjær secure the 2nd place in @SerieA_EN - and the ticket to the #ChampionsLeague - with a 2-0 away win vs Atalanta.
Massive way to finish the season - and to defend: 5 cleansheets in the last 5 #SerieA matches for the #Milan defence.

Milan secured their spot in next season’s Champions League with a strong 2-0 win against Atlanta this evening, thanks to a Franck Kessie brace. And thanks to the three points, they also secured second place in the league.

Starting XI

Donnarumma (7): The goalkeeper surprisingly wasn’t really tested by Atalanta this evening but was very important for Milan in the build-up. Comfortable between the sticks as usual and showed his leadership today.

Calabria (7): It was mostly a good match by the right-back as he won many of the duels, although helped a bit by his teammates in the second half. We all know what he can do in attack as well, so it was a shame he didn’t get forward more.

Kjaer (8): Another fantastic performance from the Dane this evening as Milan kept their fifth consecutive clean sheet. It’s hard to describe how much he means sometimes but he kept the dangerous Atalanta attackers at bay tonight.

Tomori (7.5): He was out of position on a few occasions but was very solid throughout the game. Won the ball more than once and with Champions League in the bag, his stay at the club seems to be just a formality at this point.

Hernandez (8): You could argue that he didn’t do that much in the second half, but he was instrumental in getting Milan the important first goal as he won the penalty. His bursting runs continue to be crucial for the Rossoneri.

Bennacer (6.5): Not the Algerian’s best match as he played it dangerous on more than one occasions. A few misplaced passes aside, he did do well when he faced the Atalanta goal, rather than work towards his own.

Kessie (9 – MOTM): Il Presidente lived up to his name this evening with two crucial goals, both scored from the spot. He was also crucial in the defensive phase and ran his heart out even in the final minutes, showing just how important he is.

Saelemaekers (7): Had a chance early on to give Milan the lead but failed to hit the target. Focused mostly on defending this evening and did that well, also involved in the penalty that Theo won. Very solid as usual.

Diaz (7): The Spaniard was the only man who managed to keep the ball at his feet in the first half and was a key part of the move that saw Theo win the penalty. It remains to be seen if he will stay, but he has increased his chances.

Calhanoglu (6.5): We expected the Turk to step up and lead the team tonight but we didn’t really see that. He just wasn’t that involved when Milan went forward, although he did win the second penalty. Was also solid defensively.

Leao (7): You could argue that his rating could be lower but at the same time, he got a lot out of the little he had to work with. His finish when he hit the post wasn’t necessarily bad as it was more a question of bad luck. With his runs, the Atalanta defenders were kept busy.

Substitutes

Krunic (7): When he came on, you knew exactly what Pioliw wanted and we got to see that on the pitch. The Bosnian worked extremely hard and was an important resource in midfield in the final minutes.

Meite (7): The Torino loanee might have played his last game for Milan and he almost crowned it with a lovely assist for Leao. He also did well in the defensive phase.

Dalot (N/A): He didn’t play enough to get a rating.

Mandzukic (N/A): He didn’t play enough to get a rating.

Sky reporter Peppe Di Stefano remarked on the apparent nervousness that Paolo Maldini conveyed before tonight’s match against Atalanta.

Milan went into their game against the Sardinians knowing that one win from their final two games would be enough to secure a return to the Champions League after seven years away, but they blew their chance at home and now face a tricky trip to second-placed Atalanta on the final day knowing only a victory will guarantee top four.

Pioli recently remarked that not reaching the top four would not be a failure for the club because the good work remains regardless, however it seems Maldini has a different idea as he said it would be a ‘great shame’.

Di Stefano spoke live from Bergamo in the pre-match and made an observation regarding the technical director Maldini.

“Maldini has won many Scudetti, but I have never seen him so tense and nervous; he was talking to Massara. Today they were watching Ilicic. It is a positive nervousness, healthy tension: it is his technical project, he has rehabilitated Milan from the point of view of tactical identity. Milan is now a real team and for him it would be the best gift to bring Milan back to what he calls ‘home’, that is, the Champions League,” he said (via Milannews).

Maldini to Sky: “I think no one can deny that this was a well deserved achievement. We made it by believing and suffering. We have to make people forget what was Berlusconi’s Milan. The era is different and also the investments. We have to be creative.” https://t.co/GZ2EbViF5f

🎙️ Stefano Pioli to MilanTV: "We celebrated on the pitch among ourselves but we would have liked to celebrate with our fans. In fact, at the end of the game, we went under the curve where the fans would have been and we celebrated with them from afar." https://t.co/EgZwOj5bi9

🎙Simon Kjaer to MilanTV:”Reaching this target is really incredibile. What fans did this morning, is something I will never forget for the rest of my life. They are special.” https://t.co/jfDq95MOIn

🎙Franck Kessie to MilanTV:”We gave all our heart for reaching our target. We played a great game tonight. I’m very happy and over all I’m very proud of this group.” https://t.co/NaBxzIj8kQ

Maldini discusses ‘well-deserved success’ and declares: “Pioli has never been questioned”

By Isak Möller - 24 May 2021, 0:10

Paolo Maldini and Milan got the success they were hoping for this evening as a brace from Franck Kessie was enough to beat Atalanta. And with that, they secured their return to the Champions League after seven long years.

The Rossoneri, in addition to the UCL return, finished the season on a high and snatched second place from Atalanta. It’s a drop that means €5m less in prize money for the Bergamo side, so they did have incentives to win this clash.

In an interview with Sky Italia after the game, as cited by MilanNews, sporting director Paolo Maldini spoke about tonight’s success and what it means for the club. He also made it clear that the team really deserved this.

In light of this milestone, it’s nice to look back and say that the choices were good…

“I believe that no one can deny the fact that it’s a well-deserved success, we did it believing and suffering. We are the youngest team in Italy. We were asked to lower the wage bill, we needed to be creative. The club was supportive, the coaches and the players did a fantastic job. The mentality of having no excuses created something out of the ordinary, it was our secret.”

On the difficult moments…

“I cannot deny that the difficult moments have been there, we have no regrets about what happened, things could have been done even better. We were rewarded for the choices made, not only the players but also for behaviour and communication.”

The attitude of the group…

“I was lucky enough to have started with Leonardo from whom I learned a lot. There is always something to learn. Since this a very young team, your talks with individuals are much more frequent than those our managers did with us.

“Involving everyone is the biggest challenge, many feel they are passing through, others are on loan, the condition of COVID hasn’t helped us. It was a daily job, you divide yourself between the field and the desk.”

The closeness to Pioli…

“The truth is that Pioli has never been questioned. We must always remember where we started from, after the 5-0 defeat we suffered right. We were honest in saying things, we didn’t talk much but we always told the truth.”

On Donnarumma…

“There will be time. Tonight I can’t tell you anything, it’s not even fair to say something tonight. It’s not the time to talk but to celebrate, he was one of the happier. It’s a goal that has also passed through his saves.”

For how long have you not heard the anthem?

“I haven’t been in the Champions League for a while, Milan for seven years. We are happy, we have had a fantastic path but Milan must be in the Champions League permanently also to compete economically with other clubs.”

Have you always believed in it?

“We believed in it even when things weren’t going well. We saw different things, we saw that the players had the potential to do more. Some want everything immediately, but with the 20-year-olds wearing a prestigious shirt it’s not like this. These are guys who can do even better, at 20-21 years old you are not as strong as you are at 25.”

The summer transfer window will surely be a whole lot more interesting now as UCL guarantees an extra €60m into Milan’s coffers, roughly. It’s a boost that came come into good use for the planned signings

As Calciomercato.com reports, an extra €50m will enter the club’s coffers and that allows the Rossoneri to have a rather exciting summer transfer window. Paolo Maldini and Frederic Massara have already obtained the green light from Fikayo Tomori and the first move will be to buy him permanently from Chelsea for €28m.

There is great optimism that Brahim Diaz could stay on loan for another year from Real Madrid, while the club will talk with Manchester United about Diogo Dalot. The Portuguese defender would like to stay and Milan would gladly keep him, but on one condition: United must accept a new loan with option to buy, which seems difficult.

A €25-30m striker will arrive, of the Andrea Belotti mould. New contacts with Toulouse are expected to try and sign Amine Adli for €10m for the right wing while the track that leads to Josip Iiclic is always alive as the player wants the move.
