A blogger in Kenya has been sentenced to jail time for insulting President Uhuru Kenyatta on Facebook.

The 25-year-old blogger, Alan Wadi Okenga, also known as lieutenant Wadi, was convicted of hate speech for posts he allegedly made about Kenyatta's ethnic group. Wadi was sentenced to one year in jail and a fine of $2,200 after reportedly pleading guilty to the charges. If he chooses not pay the fine, he will face another year in jail.

My take: Kenya is becoming a banana republic.

Leaders should be the custodians of criticism. They should not view it as an abuse.

Big brother is always everywhere, attempt to insult Kikwete too, call him names and see what comes down on you. No one has a right to insult anyone even in those uswahili ghetoes of yours. Criticizing a president is one thing, but taking it further by insulting him, is something else altogether.

Askari Kanzu How is Kenya becoming a banana republic, by enforcing the rule of law?
It is illegal everywhere in this world to insult and slander another person on whichever media. This dude used bad words in his tirades against the president, he should go to prison.

Try doing that in Tz today and come tell me tommorrow if u really had dinner with your family in your own house or if you were guest of the state..

These guys normally behave like juvenile, he is busy calling us banana republic just because someone was arrested for insulting the president, yet in their country, three patriotic Tanzanians were arrested because of walking for 37 days just to see the president https://www.jamiiforums.com/kenyan-...ku-37-kumuona-rais-ila-washikwa-hatimaye.html
Which one of the two incidents is more bananaish.

I must admit i had my reservations as i thought he had been jailed for criticizing but after seeing what he posted i agree with the sentence 100%

A Lawrence man who allegedly threatened to kill President Barack Obama via Twitter was arraigned Friday on nine firearms charges in Lawrence District Court, according tomultiple reports.
Stephen Perrotti, 28, allegedly threatened to kill the President "even if it takes a lifetime," according to a police report obtained by the Eagle-Tribune. The arraignment is in connection with a US Secret Service investigation into the alleged threats, according to the Eagle-Tribune.
Perrotti was arrested on Thursday after the Secret Service contacted Lawrence Police about the threats, according to CBS. Secret Service agents and Lawrence police officers went to Perrotti's residence and searched the premises.
According to The Boston Globe:
[Essex District Attorney Jonathan] Blodgett spokeswoman Carrie Kimball Monahan said five large capacity firearms were found inside his residence on Byron Avenue Thursday night, leading to Perrotti being charged with five counts of illegal possession of large capacity firearms.
The firearms included an AR-15 assault rifle. Three scopes, four high-capacity magazines, and ammunition were also allegedly in his possession.
Perrotti will return to court on September 8th for a dangerousness hearing. He is being held without bail.

We criticize and mock our president brutally on the social media here, but four-letter-wording him is going a little overboard.

Tanzania may not take action against calling the president and the other senior state officials that, but eish! Some decorum man.

Now this is quite sad. These young men trekked a whole 37km to see their leader and inform him about their plight in their village. They got arrested for that.
They fought nor insulted nobody.

This other hooligan has actually degraded the dignity of the head of state, and somebody thinks it's wrong that he shld be arrested for that, duh!

Mwanafunzi mmoja nchini Kenya amepewa
maeneo fulani.
Mwanablogu mashuhuri nchini humo pia
alishtakiwa baada ya kumwita rais Uhuru
Kenyatta 'rais ambaye hajakomaa'.
Kenya ina mitandao mahiri na mwandishi wa
BBC Emmanuel Igunza amesema kuwa kesi
hiyo imezua mjadala mkubwa kuhusu kile
kilichosahihi katika mitandao.

Huyo mwanafunzi sioni tusi alilomtukana Rais.

Kenya watakuwa wana matatizo yao binafsi!!

Bongo tuna sheria Kali zaidi ila taifa ili halijaamua kuzitumia. Sio kumtusi rais tu bali kutoa matusi kwa yeyote! Cha ajabu hapa kwetu ukitukana maksi zinapanda! Angalia bungeni matusi yanayorushwa na waheshimiwa! Angalia kwenye daladala, konda hajatukania mama zao hajaridhika, na umo kumejaa wazazi wa kila aina ila mila mtu kimyaa!! Wanafunzi wanavotukana laivu makondakta , woote kimya utadhani daladala haina mtu ndani!!
Ni vyema kuheshimiana wooote, matusi has a kwa viongozi hayafai!!

For the security to be tight Kikuyus from other regions need to be deported to central region! For Kenyans to enjoy their freedom, Kikuyus must be deported to their central region”
“The way that silly Bill proposed by silly “president” was passed by silly Jubilee skunks and assented by the same silly “president” was wanting!”“The speed and temerity of the process shows the bang “president” is desperate to dictate and throw away our democratic space! If Judiciary won’t help, the streets will salvage Kenya! If Opposition won’t lead us to the streets, then they might be too “orgasming” with “despotic” leadership!”
