A Kenyan student has been sentenced to a year in jail for insulting President Uhuru Kenyatta on social media.
Alan Wadi Okengo, 25, alias lieutenant Wadi, must also pay a fine of $2,200 (£1,400), or serve a second year. He was also convicted of hate speech, after saying members of the president's Kikuyu ethnic group should be confined to certain parts of the country. A prominent blogger was recently charged after calling Mr Kenyatta an "adolescent president".Kenya has a vibrant social media scene and the BBC's Emmanuel Igunza says the cases have led to fierce debate about what is acceptable online. Our reporter notes that many people think Okenga overstepped the mark, as they felt his comments were personal abuse that was not fit to be published. Okenga pleaded guilty to both hate speech and insulting the head of state. The Daily Nation website reports that he was arrested while trying to flee the country. The case comes as a Kenyan court suspended sections of a tough new security law which critics say curtails media freedoms.
A popular but controversial Kenyan blogger has been charged with undermining the presidency, following a tweet he posted earlier this week. Robert Alai, a fierce government critic, called President Uhuru Kenyatta an "adolescent president". He denied the charge and was released on bail of $2,000 (£1,300) but ordered not to post similar comments while investigations continue.
Mr Alai is among Kenya's most prominent and influential bloggers. He has 140,000 followers on Twitter. The BBC's Emmanuel Igunza in Nairobi says Mr Alai attracts love and hate in equal measure. On the same day as calling Mr Kenyatta an "adolescent president", he also tweeted the phone numbers of the president and other senior officials. Mr Alai has already received massive support on Twitter from Kenyans who see his prosecution as part of a government scheme to curtail media freedom and freedom of expression. Soon after being released, he tweeted defiantly that it will be hard to silence him. Two years ago, he was arrested and questioned after claiming that the then government spokesman was planning to kill him.
Kenyatta should grow up aka ''Adolescent president''.
C'mon! Kenyan 'IT' Expert, we call JK all kinds of names here. haven't you seen my post history?i thought you troll profiles before discussing anything with anyone?
I am not a child, so i won't go on and post nonsensical whimsical yadayada just to fill your empty ego. Fact is you have a President who is not man enough to stand up to criticism.
as for your Kenyan wannabe. am not surprised, it's the National MOTTO it seems, faking till something happens.Keep cheering up.
this is the problem with the internet, an 18year old with too much internet on their hand thinks they have a successful career. call me 20 years later, if you still manage that 6 figure salary, consistently, then we can talk.
Good thing with having the right brain is, it gets better with Age, just like good wine.
Dude, watakucheka watu Humu JF, JK can be a lot of things, but people in Tanzania call him whatever name they like. From Dhaifu,to Mk.w.ere to VAsco dagama. Can't remember all the weird names he gets called.
Thing is He doesn't care. Hao waliokamatwa it's just political, kama siasa za TZ huzijui, utapasua kichwa na huo ubongo wako wa kuku.
Kwenye diplomasia EA hakuna wa kumfananisha na JK, ana mapungufu yake, but comparing JK to that clueless Uhuru is disrespecting JK. Uhuru is like a toddler to JK. Uhuru's mentor is probably JK not the other way around.
Uhuru angekuwa na busara za JK, asingefikishwa ICC,wala asingesababisha Alshabab wawaletee vurugu kila siku huko north Kenya. But anaendelea kujifunza. for many he is president in training.
Tofautisha kumuita rais majina ya utani na matusi, get back to some elementary training about some stuffs of life. Uhuru has been called names, including bhang smoker and stuffs. But it's the first time am seeing somebody pulling up F** words on him and even calling for his killing. You don't get a lot of that anywhere and damn sure not a single Tz has balls enough to attempt that, even you in your cocoon.
Kweli miafrika aliyeturoga kafa zamani zile.
Time to put Sony entertainment in Jail, last month they not only called NK president all kinds of names, they even "killed" him on the big screens. I thought kenya was this Western puppet that was following whatever trend out of washington?it's now a trend to call all sort of names world leaders.
As for that Kenyan poor kid, am not supprised, stress can do a lot of things to a young man, i witness this everyday here in JF, you should have reached out to your frustrated friend to vent here in your Kenyan Corner, as it seems you don't have such places in Kenya, where you can all keep your ID's to yourself.
