Frank Lampard came off the bench to score the winner as England beat Brazil for the first time in 23 years.
In a lively opening, Ronaldinho missed a penalty and the rebound after a superb double save from Joe Hart.
The industrious Jack Wilshere played in Theo Walcott, with his shot rebounding to Wayne Rooney for a measured finish.
Brazil levelled when Fred took advantage of Gary Cahill's error, but Lampard curled in from the edge of the box after an hour to earn victory.
It was an enterprising and encouraging performance by Roy Hodgson's England, with Wilshere at the heart of much of their endeavour.
And although Fred also hit the the bar in a wobbly spell after the break, the hosts carved out more opportunities and were in control for long spells of the game.

Midfielder named man of the match after driving England to victory over Brazil at Wembley on Wednesday night

Tom Cleverley-7.5/10
Cleverley only played the opening 45 minutes before being replaced by the game-winning Frank Lampard, but what he did in the first half was great-commanding his presence in midfield and shutting down a dominant Brazilian midfield.


Steven Gerrard-7.5/10

Another fine international performance from Gerrard, who pushed forward well throughout from his role as a holding midfielder. He combined spectacularly with both Jack Wilshere and Frank Lampard when asked to and was once again a threat on set pieces as well.



Jack Wilshere-9/10

A man-of-the-match performance from Wilshere, who was brilliant and creative in attack, as well as very key in the Three Lions' defense here. He did concede a penalty early, but made up for it with some spectacular dribbling and dynamic attacking.

He was easily England's best player throughout this one.

Much was expected from Neymar at Wembley, just as much will be expected every time the primped, precocious prince of Brazilian football takes the field from here to his home World Cup and beyond.


This time, Neymar fell short. His influence was rarely felt in Brazil's attacking effort and his slight, boyish frame was found wanting more than once when he needed a strong shoulder to lean on. Neymar will have his day, but this was not it.


This day belonged to Arsenal's Jack Wilshere, whose first start for England since June 2011 delivered on all the expectancy that comes with being one of the most gifted midfielders of his generation. Wilshere was not just the best player in a white shirt, he was the best on the pitch.


England manager Roy Hodgson can take credit for his well-considered formation, which employed Steven Gerrard at the fulcrum of midfield and placed Wilshere alongside Tom Cleverley in front of him. Gerrard's assured presence liberated both of them, and instilled a confidence in Wilshere that brought out his very best.

Wilshere's first contribution was a driving run through the middle that evoked memories of Paul Gascoigne in his prime-Wilshere swaying past tackles and turning on the afterburners to escape a second bite. It was good to be back, and Wilshere wasn't going to waste a second of it after all those months ruled out through injury.

The goal was Wilshere's in the making. Soon after, he was skipping past yellow shirts again, in another burst through the Brazil midfield, and by halftime had already stolen the show from the star-studded cast around him.

They came to see Neymar. They left talking about Wilshere.
