I like Jerry cans. Did you know they were designed with their unique handles so that 1 person could carry two full cans, or four empty cans. Two people could carry 3 cans between them and if they were dropped in water there is an in-built air pocket which would aid in their floatation. They were also designed so that they could be stacked efficiently and poured smoothly without glugging.

Hii ndio ilikuwa Bendera yetu, na katikati ya Bendera ni Ngao ya Jamii (Coat of Arms) ya Nchi yetu enzi tunaitwa Deutsch-Ostafrika (Ujerumani ya Afrika Mashariki) miaka ya 1885 mpaka 1918.

Wakati huo nchi ilikuwa na eneo la Mita Square 994,996 Km² ndani yake kuna Burundi na Rwanda, na Eneo la Nchi ya Msumbiji lililoitwa Kionga Triangle.

Je wajua neno la Kiswahili "Shule" limetoka kwenye Neno la Kijerumani "Schule" yote yakimaanisha "School".

Maeneo mengine yaliitwa hivi:

• Rombo iliitwa Fischerstadt
• Nyakanazi iliitwa Friedberg
• Kisarawe iliitwa Hoffnungshöh
• Tukuyu iliitwa Langenburg
• Ushetu iliitwa Marienthal
• Shume (huko kwa Wapare) kuliitwa Neu-Hornow
• Mbulu kuliitwa Neu-Trier
• Sekenke paliitwa Sachsenwald na ilikua ni Mgodi.
• Lushoto iliitwa Wilhelmsdorf.

Kipindi hiki ndio tulijengewa Reli iliyoitwa Usambara Railway mwaka 1891 ilijengwa na Wajerumani na ilikuwa na Km 350, ilianzia Mjini Tanga, ikawa na makutano na Kenya Mji wa Kahe, ikapita Moshi mpaka Arusha.

Wajerumani katika Reli hii walikuwa na vichwa vya Treni 18 (Locomotive) na mabehewa 199, kipindi hicho Reli hii ilikuwa na wafanyakazi 562 huku kati yao 35 tu ndio walikuwa Wajerumani.

Lengo la Wajerumani kujenga Reli hii ilikuwa ni kuunganisha Bandari ya Tanga na Ziwa Victoria kupitia milima ya Usambara.

Treni la kwanza lilipita likiwa tupu tarehe 26 September 1911 ili kujaribu safari na kufanikiwa 100%, likapita tena likiwa na Abiria tarehe 4 October 1911 na kufanikiwa 100% Wajerumani wakaamini kweli kitu ni Konki.

Hivyo ukafanyika uzinduzi wa Reli tarehe 7 February 1912, na baada ya hapo Treni lilikuwa lazima lifanye safari kila siku kutoka Tanga mpaka Buiko na Kurudi, safari ilichukua muda wa masaa 14 na dakika 40.

Reli hii haikukamilika mpaka Arusha sababu ya Vita ya kwanza ya Dunia, Waingereza ndio Wakaiunganisha.
