Llorente relishing Tevez link-up

Fernando Llorente says he cannot wait to play for Juventus and partner Carlos Tevez in the Bianconeri’s attack, after officially signing for the Italian champions on Monday.

Llorente, 28, has joined Juve on a free transfer after his contract with Athletic Bilbao expired this summer.

And the Spain international arrived in Turin on Monday to undergo a medical and put pen to paper on a four-year contract before his official presentation on Tuesday afternoon.

Delighted to finally arrive - an agreement over a transfer was agreed in January - Llorente now cannot wait to get to work with his new team-mates, and Tevez, 29, in particular.

“I’m really pleased to be here and to play with Tevez,” he said as he signed autographs outside Juve’s headquarters in Turin.

Llorente is the second missing piece in the Bianconeri’s jigsaw as the back-to-back Scudetto winners look to transform their domestic success into a more competitive edge in the Champions League, after being shown their limitations by Bayern Munich last season.

Mirko Vucinic, Fabio Quagliarella, Alessandro Matri and Sebastian Giovinco all came in for criticism last season as Juve’s spluttering attack left Antonio Conte’s side increasingly reliant on goals from midfield.

With Llorente and Tevez, the belief is that Juve now have their strongest attack since David Trezeguet and Alessandro Del Piero fired them to their last Champions League final in 2003.

“Tevez and Llorente are two really nice presents from (president Andrea) Agnelli,” defender Leonardo Bonucci told Gazzetta dello Sport. “Juve’s aim is not only going to be confirming ourselves for the third year in a row in Italy, but achieving something big in Europe too.”

John Elkann, president of Juve’s owners, Fiat, added: “Today is a great day for Fernando. I am very happy for him and for Tevez. Juve have always had strong No. 10s and Carlitos [Tevez] is one of those. We have a strong squad and we are going to be the team to beat because we are the defending champions.”

Date set for Supercoppa

The curtain-raiser to the new Serie A season, the Supercoppa, has been officially scheduled by the Lega Calcio for August 18 at Rome's Stadio Olimpico.

Coppa Italia winners Lazio and Serie A champions Juventus will contest the traditional season opener in the Italian capital, and Lazio's home stadium, after the two clubs could not agree on an alternative venue.

As part of a deal struck by the Lega Calcio and a Chinese cooperation in 2011, three editions of the event between then and 2014 were due to be staged in Beijing. Given the lucrative nature of staging the match in China, Lazio were keen on the 2013 edition being held in the Far East, but Juventus' pre-season plans, including a trip to the USA, meant they were less open to the idea.

It had been suggested the game could have been staged in New York or even Toronto, but the Lega Calcio have now determined that the fixture will go ahead at the Olimpico with a 21:00 CET kick-off.

Even with home advantage, Lazio goalkeeper Federico Marchetti knows his side will have a challenge on their hands lifting the first piece of silverware on offer in 2013-14. "Our season is tough from the beginning because we face the strongest side in Italy," he told Lazio Style Radio. "We know all about their quality and we will go about it in an open way to lift this trophy. We are really enthusiastic and we have got to start in style to win the big trophies that our fans deserve."

Lazio defeated city rivals Roma 1-0 at the Olimpico in May to lift the Coppa Italia for the sixth time while Juve sealed back-to-back Scudettos for the seventh time in their history this year.

Italian league lacks quality - Nesta

Former Italy international central defender Alessandro Nesta says Serie A has fallen behind the leagues in Spain, Germany and England in quality.
The 37-year-old, now at MLS side Montreal Impact, won the Scudetto three times in his career with Lazio and AC Milan but says the reason for Serie A's weakness is a lack of money.
"There's no money in Italy at the moment and the best players go to play in other leagues - Spain, England, Germany. Italy's going down," he told the BBC's World Football programme.
Nesta, who won the World Cup in 2006, was pleasantly surprised by Juventus's signing of Carlos Tevez from Manchester City for £12m.
"It's a very good signing. A player like Tevez, I didn't think would play in Serie A now. Juventus did a good job," he said.
Nesta wants to go into coaching when he retires at the end of the Major League Soccer season.
He has given his backing to his former manager at Milan, Carlo Ancelotti, after he took over at Real Madrid.
"He is the best coach for Madrid. Madrid is a difficult place to coach. There's a lot of pressure and Ancelotti is very good when he's under pressure.
"(At AC Milan, Silvio) Berlusconi and (Adriano) Galliani, all the time, wanted the best for the team. The pressure was very, very hard but Carlo Ancelotti, everyday, had a smile. He was perfect."

Conte: Tevez, Llorente must earn places

Juventus coach Antonio Conte has expressed his satisfaction in seeing Carlos Tevez and Fernando Llorente in a Bianconeri shirt for the first time.

The two summer signings linked up in a 7-0 friendly win against a local amateur selection in Juve’s summer training camp on Wednesday. Tevez grabbed a brace in the win with Alessandro Matri and Mirko Vucinic also scoring two goals apiece. Marco Motta opened the scoring.

“I was positively impressed,” said Conte. “Clearly they are very willing, but they need to play together more to forge a greater understanding. I’m pleased with the way they fit in.”

The Old Lady’s new first-choice attack partnership started the game, but there was room for Matri, Vucinic and Fabio Quagliarella in the second half. With such a wealth of attacking options, Conte insists nobody can be certain of a regular place in his starting XI.

“We’ve got a healthy battle for places and I will pick whoever I believe is in the best form and worthy of his place,” Conte said. “These players have gifted us two Scudettos in two years so they are players I know I can rely on.”

However, the chances of seeing three of the five forwards on the field at the same time in Serie A next season are slim, according to Conte, who took a look at that option in Saint Vincent on Wednesday evening.

“You can play it against an amateur team, but certainly not in Serie A,” he told reporters. “I don’t see why I should change the system which has helped us win two titles in a row.”

Pesa imekua ngumu sana Serie A Mkuu, hata Nesta kakiri hayo juzi, ona vipaji vinavyoondoka Serie A, yaani roho inauma kweli, basi tu!

Tevez not focused on Champions League

Carlos Tevez has played down Juventus' hopes of winning next season's Champions League, insisting his side's defence of their Serie A title is more important.

Juve were eliminated at the quarter-final stage of last season's competition by eventual winners Bayern Munich, but their impressive run through the group stage has raised expectations heading into the 2013/14 campaign.

Tevez, 29, believes Juve will be more focused on claiming a second consecutive Scudetto and should not be earmarked as favourites for Europe's top flight competition.

"I think we have to be calm and make sure we don't put pressure on ourselves to win the Champions League," Tevez told CNN. "If we don't then that pressure will become impossible to escape from.

"We have to be calm and know that winning the Scudetto again will make us part of Italian history and then we can think about everything else. We all dream of winning the Champions League but our main objective is winning Serie A. Then we can be calm in the Champions League and everything will become a lot easier."

Tevez's comments are perhaps motivated by the pressure he faced at Manchester City to win the Champions League and the Argentina international has suggested the intense scrutiny his side were placed under contributed to their failure to get past the group stage last season.

"Yes, there was way too much pressure," he added. "I came from everyone - the club, the fans. I think that too much pressure just hurts the team. What happened was that there so much hype and pressure to be one of the giants of Europe and we didn't do it. We dropped out in the first round of the Champions League on both occasions."

Juve turn down Inter approach for Isla

Juventus have rejected Inter Milan’s interest in Chilean midfielder Mauricio Isla, Bianconeri director Giuseppe Marotta has said.

Isla, 25, suffered a frustrating debut campaign with Juve as injuries restricted him to just 11 appearances following his transfer from Udinese.

However, Marotta told the Gazzetta dello Sport: “Mauricio has been the subject of interest from Inter. We sat around a table to look at the proposal from both a financial and technical point of view.

“At this time, in agreement with the coach, we won't be putting the player on the market. Isla remains our player in every way.”

Marotta did acknowledge, though, that Juve have an obligation to balance the books.

“We have to pay attention to our finances,” Marotta added. “Our model is this: we want to remain the top team in Italy and be highly competitive in Europe even if it is increasingly hard to compete in the international transfer market these days.”
