Several dead after bus explosion in Mandera

Eight people have been killed in a grenade attack on a bus in Mandera town, North-eastern Kenya by suspected al shabaab militia.

The militia are said to have sprayed the bus ferrying KCSE exam papers with bullets before lobbing a grenade that instantaneously exploded killing all on board. Those killed include Lafey secondary school headmaster, the district education officer, and two Kenya police reserve among others. The attack happened 100 kilometres from Mandera town.

This is the third grenade attack in the past five days bringing the death toll in suspected al shabaab related attacks to 9.

"We have received a report of a banditry attack in Mandera District about 110 km from Mandera town involving a vehicle carrying government officials among others," police spokesman Eric Kiraithe said.

Kiraithe said the District Police Commander and his security team were proceeding to the scene of the attack.

Mandera is in Kenya's sparsely populated far northeast, close to the porous borders with Ethiopia and Somalia. Kenyan troops deployed into anarchic Somalia 12 days ago in an offensive against al-Shabaab militants blamed for a series of kidnappings on Kenyan soil and frequent cross-border incursions.

Al Shabaab had warned it would strike back.
Two separate grenade attacks in the capital Nairobi on October 24, killed one person and wounded more than 20. A Kenyan man pleaded guilty on October 26 to one of the attacks and being a member of al Shabaab, the Somali Islamist group.

Four civilians have been killed by unidentified assailants who attacked a vehicle with rocket-propelled grenades and machine guns near the Kenya-Somali border, police and officials with Kenya's Red Cross say.
The attack occurred on Thursday in Mandera, in Kenya's sparsely populated northeast, close to the porous borders with Ethiopia and Somalia.

"The vehicle was carrying eight people but four of them have died," a police officer in the region said on condition of anonymity.

The vehicle was reportedly carrying education and security officials ferrying secondary school examination papers. It was not immediately clear who was behind the attack.
"We have just received reports that a grenade was hurled at a government vehicle, which was leaving Lafey and coming here to Mandera," a teacher at a Mandera school, who did not wish to be named, said.
Three other Mandera residents told the Reuters news agency they had heard reports of four deaths. Nelly Muluka-Oluoch, a Kenyan Red Cross spokeswoman, said agency personnel who went to the site of the attack confirmed the number of casualties.
Al-Shabab attacks
Kenyan authorities have tightened security after Somalia's al-Shabab threatened to attack the country in retaliation against its military offensive against them.

Al Jazeera's Peter Greste, reporting from Nairobi, said: "The main suspicion is going to fall towards al-Shabab [but] I think we need to be very careful about linking these too quickly."
Nairobi was rocked this week by two grenade attacks that killed one person and wounded dozens. Kenyan security officials suspect al-Shabab, who have not claimed responsibility.
"Al-Shabab tends to attack much more symbolic targets, with much higher body counts," our correspondent said, "but, clearly, that link is one that the authorities are going to be looking at very closely."
A Kenyan suspect arrested after two grenade blasts earlier this week in Nairobi admitted in court that he was involved in one of the attacks, and said he is a member of al-Shabab.
Elgiva Bwire Oliacha, 28, also known as Mohammed Seif, pleaded guilty to nine charges, including involvement in Monday's explosion at a busy bus stop which left one person dead and several more injured.
An officer with the anti-terror police unit who brought Oliacha to court on Wednesday said authorities would bring more charges against him in court on Friday.
The officer, who wanted to remain anonymous, said that Oliacha was expected to plead guilty to all of those charges as well.

Kenya Plans to Exit Somalia Once Al-Shabaab Is ‘Destroyed'

Kenyan government spokesman Alfred Mutua

October 27, 2011, 9:03 AM EDTBy Eric Ombok

Oct. 27 (Bloomberg) -- Kenyan forces that entered Somalia last week will leave the country once they have removed the threat posed by al-Qaeda-linked rebels to security in the region, Kenyan government spokesman Alfred Mutua said.

The "strategy is to destroy al-Shabaab's network within the shortest time possible," Mutua told reporters today in Nairobi. "Kenya has no plans or intentions to stay in Somalia an hour beyond necessary."

Somalia's government said yesterday its sovereignty and territorial integrity should be respected during the incursion, which Kenya says is aimed at combating al-Shabaab, the militia it blames for kidnapping tourists and aid workers in Kenya.

"We believe a lot was lost in translation," Mutua said. "What the president meant is that he does not mind the Kenyan troops fighting alongside his people."

Ok. Next time use Kiswahili and I'll understand you better, b/s your English kind of wobbles!

Is it too much to ask you and everyone else not to turn this into another Kenya vs Tanzania match up. The sheer acts of bravado through keyboard militarism does very little to articulate your points.

As much as forums might bring out the bozos in many of you, you are doing great harm to your handles if anonymity
is what is revving you up.

Point taken, and I hope we all adhere to this simple ethic as the basis for a healthy discussion as we go along!

Nairobi is fighting with faceless enemy. Wameenda somalia huku al shabab wamewaacha nairobi!

Kenyan troops on Thursday killed nine Al-Shabaab fighters and injured several others in a fierce exchange of fire after they were ambushed by the militants in Southern Somalia.

The Kenyan troops were ambushed by an estimated 45 Al-Shabaab fighters as they moved from the town of Tabda to Beles Qooqani in central Jubaland to reinforce their compatriots.

“Today, at around 11.30am, Kenyan troops came under Al-Shabaab attack, which marks the first engagement with the militia force. Al-Shabaab strength at the time of attack is estimated at 45 militants,” said Kenya Defence Forces spokesman Major Emmanuel Chirchir in a statement.

Two Kenyan soldiers were injured, one critically during the fire exchange and were airlifted to the Advanced Dressing Station in Garissa for treatment.

It was the first time the Kenyan troops were encountering resistance from the militants since they started Operation Linda Nchi 10 days ago.
