Kenya declares war on Al Shabaab!

Kenya declares war on Al Shabaab!

We can go back and forth with this all day but it doesn't really serve any purpose. The long and short of it is that we, Kenyans, have found ourselves in a situation where the chaos and instability in the neighbouring country is having a negative effect on our wellbeing. As such, our government has decided, in conjunction with the Somali government, to take steps to rectify the situation. You might think that we have been "badly advised" but, personally, I don't think that our political and military strategists are morons...they know what they are doing and they'll have thought this through.

Its' ok my friend, whatever i said/write here is just my opinion, at the end of the day there is nothing we can do the Generals have taken over....

US Senate withholds funding for Kenya military
By BMJ Muriithi

The United States Senate has passed a Bill imposing conditions on military assistance to Kenya.

In its 2012 fiscal year report, the Supreme US law-making organ states that the foreign military and economic support funds will not be made available to Kenya until the Government establishes "thorough and credible investigations of alleged crimes by the Kenyan Military in Mt Elgon in March 2008″.

But in a swift reaction, Kenya's ambassador to the United States Elkanah Odembo said the action of the Senate was ill advised as it was taken without seeking the position of the Kenyan government on the issue.

Speaking to The Standard On Saturday in his office in Washington DC, the envoy said it was wrong for the US legislature to embed an accusatory clause in the Bill without consulting the Kenyan Government.....

Never trust the Americans my friend....

See what I was sayingearlier...always happy whenever something, seemingly, goes wrong for Kenya. What did Kenya/ns ever do to you?

I dread to think of the reaction on this forum if Kenyan troops die in Somalia...

This is how the big brother is dealing with terrorists and Pirates ....

USA negotiates with terrorists instead of destroying them

03.11.2011

American generals admitted that the U.S. military policy in Afghanistan has suffered a complete fiasco. The White House announced that it was ready to sit down with the Taliban to the negotiating table. One of the key points of negotiation is likely to be Pakistan. Pravda.Ru talked to an expert to find out what might be the goals pursued by the United States in the region in the negotiations with the Taliban movement.

On Tuesday, the Obama administration has clarified what it meant talking about a political end to the war. First, America is planning to negotiate with the Taliban. Second, the plan is to strengthen the escalation of military pressure on the most ruinous for the U.S. fighters from the Taliban tribes. First of all, it is a Pakistani clan Haqqani. The U.S. State Department is hopeful that Islamabad will move toward Washington in this direction. If Pakistan agrees to the U.S. proposals, the success of the negotiations can be considered secure.
On October 21 Hillary Clinton said approximately the same during her visit in Kabul. The visit was immediately called confusing. It was not officially reported as required by the international protocol.

Immediately on her arrival in Kabul Clinton held a press conference, where the U.S. Secretary of State in a very tough manner advised Pakistan to clear its territory of terrorists as quickly as possible and become an integral part of the Afghan regulation. Clinton said that Pakistan's participation in the US-Afghan strategy called "war, negations, creation" should become the main life imperative for Islamabad.
Clinton said that if Pakistan resists, then it will be under a very serious pressure. America's intentions in terms of the Afghan settlement have not changed. "We will fight, we will negotiate and build," said Clinton.

The war Clinton was talking about is directed primarily against the Pashtun clan Haqqani and a terrorist organization under the same name. It is Haqqani and not Taliban that are the Americans' biggest concern.
Haqqani was formed in the 1980s during the Afghan war. The head of the clan Jalaluddin Haqqani was one of the most prominent warlords of the Afghan mujahideen. He began his career with Gulbuddin Hekmatyar. Weapons, money, clothing and ammunition came to him through the CIA and the Defense Ministry of Saudi Arabia.

At the same time, Jalaluddin had a direct contact with Osama bin Laden and "Al-Qaeda." In 1992 he became the Minister of Justice in the first government of the Mujahideen. In the 1990s Haqqani alternately served as the Minister of Borders, the Minister of Tribes, and the governor of Paktia province. To date, Haqqani is one of the most important allies of the Taliban. Militants bases are located on the border area between Pakistan's North Waziristan province and the Afghan province of Khost.

The Americans talked about Pashtun clan as a "threat" not that long ago. The first mention of it was made in late 2009, after an armed attack on a CIA base in Khost province. The second came in September of 2011. That day terrorists attacked the U.S. embassy and the headquarters of NATO in Kabul. Responsibility for both of the U.S. bombing was laid on clan Haqqani. Such a drastic reassessment confused many observers as earlier the United States placed certain hopes on the clan. For example, in 2001, when the US planned to use the representatives of Haqqani to split the Taliban.

Haqqani clan was largely a cause for the US-Pakistani confrontation. The U.S. accused Pakistan of supporting militants. Pakistan, in turn, called the group "a long-term servant of the CIA," alluding to the long-standing ties of the clan with the U.S. intelligence agencies. Islamabad, not without reason, believes that the United States, using references to the clan Haqqani, want to drag Pakistan into its political game.

However, the new U.S. strategy in Afghanistan may be independent of the Pakistani presence in the talks with the Afghan Taliban. The Afghan establishment and the opposition are united by the anti-Pakistani factor. Back in 2009 the vice-president of Afghanistan Javid Kohestani insisted on shifting the anti-terrorist operations of U.S. and NATO from Afghanistan to Pakistan.
Jamil Karzai, a close relative of the Afghan president, agreed with him: "The Taliban does not have Afghan roots. The main centers of the Taliban and Al Qaeda are on the territory of Pakistan." Using the tensions between the Taliban, the U.S. could very well attract the radicals on its side. Using the anti-Pakistani attitude, the Taliban could be reprogrammed in the way beneficial for the Pentagon. Then the negotiations can be considered quite successful. It is unclear, however, whether another round of war would lead to a "negotiation" and "creation."

The Chairman of the Islamic Committee of Russia Heydar Jemal shared his vision on the future negotiations between the Taliban and the U.S. with "Pravda.Ru".

"The United States has been trying to negotiate with the Taliban. Taliban was suggested, in particular, control of the six provinces of Afghanistan in exchange for keeping the six bases in Tajikistan. Now the Americans are building "the base of all times" in Tajikistan, and they have to come to an agreement. The decision to sit down to the negotiating table is largely due to the decision of Atambayev to expel the Americans from Manas. It is a bold solution, a commendable one, but perhaps risky for him personally. The Americans obviously intend to take down anyone who stands in their way. They have quite clear plans for the so-called "new silk road."

They want to make Afghanistan a platform for the control over Central Asia. According to the plans of the United States, Afghanistan should pose a threat to China, Iran, Pakistan and Russia. The Taliban is the only force that stands in the U.S.'s way as is stands up for itself. The U.S. wants to negotiate with this power, make it its ally. I think the Americans will not be successful. In many ways, the Islamic factor will play its role. As soon as the Americans start talking about "regular arrangements" again, it would only mean a failure in the negotiations. They will not come to an agreement with the Taliban as they have not been able to do it earlier. Afghanistan will continue to boil."

Somali Pirates Buy Immunity from US drone attacks?

20.10.2011

by Thomas C. Mountain*

As US drone launched cruise missiles once again rain down on ordinary Somalis, the Somali pirates carrying out most of the piracy in the Horn of Africa remain immune from attack.

The Kenyan Army may be invading southern Somalia allegedly chasing "Somali pirates," yet the fact remains that zero cruise missiles, zero smart bombs and zero snatch and grab commando operations have been carried out against Somali pirates.

To this day, not one Somali pirate has been killed on the ground in Somalia by the international naval flotillas in the Indian Ocean after receiving the ransoms they extract for the ships and crews they have captured.

With hundreds of ships seized, thousands of crewmen held in captivity and, by some estimates, over half a billion dollars in ransoms paid the Somali pirates so feared by seamen traveling through the Horn of Africa, clearly they have immunity from the international naval task forces patrolling the Indian Ocean.

This immunity also seems to extend to the western media for no one, not Jay Bahadur at the New York Times or the venerable USA magazine, The Nation's Jeremy Scahill whose CIA vetted junket to Mogadishu was heralded by Amy Goodman on Democracy Now! as an "expose" have raised the obvious question, why do the Somali pirates have immunity from attack?

Maybe all the reporters covering the Horn of Africa have been inoculated with a vaccine to provide them with immunity from asking such a simple question, why hasn't there been any retaliation against the Somali pirates?

As they say, "it doesn't take a rocket scientist" to notice this, so maybe something is slipped into their inoculations immunizing them before they fly off to the Horn of Africa?

To those of us who actually follow the media based in the Horn of Africa the answer has been obvious for sometime.

First, the Somali pirates are mainly based in the warlord controlled "autonomous" region calling itself Puntland, which occupies the very tip of the Horn of Africa. The warlord "President" of Puntland is well known for his alliance with and support from the Meles Zenawi regime ruling Ethiopia. Ethiopia has substantial military bases in Puntland, and the leaders of Puntland are regularly reported to be welcome guests in Addis Ababa, capital of Ethiopia.

From on the ground in Puntland, Somalia:

"Garowe Online (Garowe)

Somalia: Puntland President Meets With Ethiopian Foreign Minister

2 April 2010

The president of Somalia's Puntland State government, Dr. Abdirahman Mohammed Farole, has held a meeting with Ethiopian Foreign Affairs Minister, Seyoum Mesfin, in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa.

The meeting which was held in the Hotel Sharaton, where the Puntland delegation is staying, was focused on relations between the two governments and the general security situation in Somalia.

According to press release from the Puntland Presidency, the meeting ended on a good note with both parties reaffirming support."

In Ethiopia's capital, Addis Ababa, the Puntland warlords were seen shaking hands and embracing the top leadership of the Ethiopian regime though behind the scenes it is reported that suitcases stuffed with cash were delivered to Ethiopian V.I.P.'s and nasty quarrels broke out over the amount of cash forked over.

A couple of years ago a Saudi Arabian newspaper published what is common knowledge amongst those in the know here in the Horn of Africa.

In an interview with the Eritrean Minister of Information (everything published in Saudi Arabia has to be cleared by the Saudi Intelligence services before publication so this reflected the unofficial position of the Saudi government), it was disclosed that Somali pirates were known to go directly to Ethiopian military bases in Puntland upon receiving their ransom payments.

Once they make their payoffs to the Ethiopians, they are immune from attack, for Ethiopia is the USA's policeman on the beat in East Africa, and as such, their military is off limits to any attack by the international naval flotillas fighting piracy in the Indian Ocean.

With drones flying overhead sending live video feed via satellites to military attack controllers in the USA it is known exactly where these pirates go after receiving their ransom payments, so ignorance is not an explanation for the immunity these pirates have.

Suitcases stuffed with millions of dollars buys immunity for the half a billion dollar piracy business in the Horn of Africa, and is all too typical of how much of what passes for business is carried out in Africa as a whole.

This has been common knowledge amongst well informed observers in the Horn of Africa for years now and is the only reality based explanation for the absolute on the ground immunity that has protected the Somali pirates based in Puntland for over a decade now.

You pay, you play, though those few poverty stricken Somali desperadoes caught in the act of piracy on the high seas remain sacrificial lambs, held up for the world to see that there really is a war against piracy in the Horn of Africa.

As I have said many times, truth is stranger than fiction when it comes to the Horn of Africa. That the Somali pirates have absolute immunity on the ground after receiving their ransoms is beyond dispute. The only important question remaining is why this immunity extends to the international media?

Are not you the one that was yapping on about how America was using Kenya in Somalia??????????????Now you have been proven wrong!

Do you understand how the US congress works? Obviously not from your champagne popping comments. Did you read the article and I ask what is the correlation between the article and Sen. Kirk's comments in congress??? You suffer from Inferiority complex.

You were shouting on about how you military can do this and that and the fact is you can not afford to go to war despite the fact Al shabaab has violated TZ territorial waters time and again. That is just a fact and I know it might hurt but who are we kidding here.

You pointed at Kenya's poor yet the fact is that there exists a larger poverty stricken population in Kenya, three times the number of Kenyans under the poverty line in your country and what you did is introduced poverty but when you realized your country has bigger problems you ran away from the fact and changed the topic.

INFERIORITY COMPLEX!!!!!

I guarantee you that with all the argument about which army is inexperienced and that, many of us still don't sympathize with terrorists and their respective organizations. Remember, opposing a war /= supporting your adversary.....

But I wasn't talking about that argument about which army is experienced/better etc etc...if you care to look, you'll notice that I haven't involved myself in that line of discussion at all. Those are clear statements by people hoping that we fail and that our soldiers get slaughtered in theatre....that goes far beyond just opposing the war.

More the truth behind the war that high school kids dont like to hear about, all indications are that, they are coming from those rich corrupt politician families who stand to gain from this wayward war...

Norway oil interests push Kenya into Somalia proxy war

Like in Libya, the scramble for Somalia is for its natural resources - for the WEST!

When the British couple, Paul and Rachel Chandler was kidnapped and held for one year by Somali pirates, the UK government did not use tanks and military jets to hunt for the abductors. But the case is different in Kenya, where few days after the abduction of foreign tourists and aid workers, the country crossed the border into Somalia, claiming it was chasing the Al-Shabab militants, whom it said were behind the kidnapping.

Al-Shabab, a desperate Islamic militants, who felt the heat in the capital, Mogadishu denied taking part in the abductions of the foreigners in Kenya, although Kenya it self has no proof to show that it was Al-Shabab that had actually captured the foreigners.
For the last two months Somali gunmen from both sides of the border have been operating freely in the area, killing innocent refugees, raping and wounding some others. Kenyan officials are aware of this and were reluctant to take any action.

Kenyan military incursion against Al-Shabab:
Reliable sources in Kenya and Somali governments confirm that Kenya has been pushed by Norway, which has long time dream of the war-torn country's oil resources.
A Kenyan official who declined to be named told Wagoshanews that Nairobi authorities received millions of dollars from the Norwegian government to attack southern Somalia in the pretext of fighting against Al-Shabab. "The Norwegian was angry with Somali parliament's recent decision of rejecting a plan aimed at changing Somalia's sea boundaries that could allow Norway to drill free of charge oil from the region", added the official.
Since 2006 Norway has been making efforts to find an opportunity of drilling Somalia oil, but according to Somali politicians, Norwegians have been looking for dodgy deals that will give them rights to benefit from Somalia resources.

Norway attempts to trap Somali leaders on oil resources:
In 2007, Norwegian officials were playing tricky diplomatic game on Somalia crisis. Diplomats used to issue comments on how best the country's crisis could be resolved, sometimes using sympathy words to Islamic Courts leaders in Eritrea. Norway also attempted to talk to some Somali cabinet members to ensure that it's given rights to Somalia's oil reserves.
During this time Norway had also been working on how to change Somalia's sea boundaries after some negative signs emerged from its efforts to loot Horn of African oil reserves.

Norway attempts on how to use UN to get Somalia oil:
Norway had contacted with the UN regarding the Somalia sea boundaries in order to make some changes that will enable her to achieve its hidden agenda. The UN asked Norway to work with UN office on Somalia affairs and Somalia leaders on how to succeed in this issue.

The former UN envoy to Somalia, Ahmad Ould Abdallah backed Norwegian bid and signed papers to ensure that the boundaries change are made according to Norwegian needs.
But again the UN needed a signature of the Somali leaders to back the Norwegian bid, and it was Shaykh Sharif Shaykh Ahmad, the Somali interim president, who signed the Norwegian bid in Turkey, when officials from Norway approached him and convinced him to sign. [N.B.: Such "signatures" of the TFG, however, are legally not even worth the paper on which they are written. But, as could be observed in Libya, it seems not to be important any more if international and national laws are bent or broken - as long as the Western robber barons get the profits to cover their artificial debt-holes into which now the whole global economy could fall.

It's not clear how Norway had succeeded to convince Mr Ould Abdallah and President Sharif, but sources within Somali and Kenyan governments say huge amount, possible millions of dollars were paid to secure the deal.

Norway, Somalia oil cooperation during Siyad Barre rule:
A Somali minister who declined to be named said Norway tried producing oil in Somalia after successful; oil discovery in North Eastern part o country (known as Puntland) and southern Somalia between Barawe to Jubba regions in southern Somalia.
But some western countries that had more influence than Norway stopped the plan.
President Siyad Barre was for the plan, but it was difficult to implement it without the consent of the powerful Western countries.

Kenyan ministers, buffer zone affair:
As Kenyan military incursion continues in southern Jubba regions, Norway is said to be using some individuals in Kenyan cabinet to persuade the Somali government to support the idea of creating a buffer zone in Jubbaland region.

Norway believes the creation of Jubbaland administration will facilitate its conspiracy of stealing Somalia reso urces.
Reports say the recent visit of Kenyan ministers to Mogadishu was to put more pressure on President Shaykh Sharif Shaykh Ahmad, who opposes the so-called Azania state backed by Kenyan government.

The ultimate goal of Norway is to use the rule Jubbaland and loot its resources through Kenyan government, specially the suspected corrupt ministers who are in the fore front of this ill advised project.

A military general famed for revamping Kenya’s peacekeeping efforts in Sierra Leone, among other heroics, is leading the war against Al-Shabaab in Somalia.

Major-General Leonard Ngondi, a special forces officer described by colleagues as brilliant and a strategist, has been given the task of ridding the country of the menace caused by the militant group blamed for fanning insecurity in the Horn of Africa.

Slightly built and standing just about five feet tall, Maj-Gen Ngondi is not your typical military commander.

But behind the diminutive figure is a highly decorated and battle hardened soldier, the Sunday Nation has learnt in interviews with officers who have worked with him.

As the overall commander of the Kenyan troops, Maj-Gen Ngondi’s main task is to ensure Al-Shabaab are defeated and the Transitional Federal Government (TFG) installed in parts of Southern Somalia.

Sorry if the truth is a bitter pill to swallow but someone asked why Tanzania is not in Somalia despite being affected by Somalia as much as Kenya, Uganda or Burundi all of whom have boots on the ground there.

I don't mean to insult anyone but merely stating the simple truth.

A big military budget is not used as a deterrence. The US spends the most on the military not for show but to be able to fight off threats.

So you think Kenya can compare itself with the mighty United States? Sorry mate your school of thought is flawed.

Kenya Police escape death after landmine fails to explode

North-Eastern-PC-James-ole-Serian.jpg

North Eastern PC James ole Serian said they suspect the device was targeting the officersHowever, no injury or destruction was reported.

Police and aid workers narrowly escaped death when a truck they were traveling in ran over a landmine that did not explode. The device had been planted near Hagadera Police Station, about a kilometre from the Dadaab refugee camp in Garissa along a busy road used by aid trucks to ferry supplies.

Police were escorting a Kenya Red Cross truck on a routine trip to ferry humanitarian assistance when the incident occurred on Saturday at 10am. The region is a main front in the operation by the military on the offensive against Somalia’s Al Shabaab.

According to witnesses, the driver of the truck realised he had run over an ordinance when he saw smoke moments after he had driven out of the post. North Eastern PC James ole Serian said they suspect the device was targeting the officers. However, no injury or destruction was reported.

“Luckily there was no explosion and the officers are okay. It was a device that did not explode after the vehicle ran over it,’’ he said on the phone. The Provincial Police Officer Leo Nyongesa also said the landmine did not explode but added that investigation had been launched to determine the type of explosive.

Immobilise device
“The device was planted at Daadab but luckily it did not explode, a team of bomb experts and detectives are on the ground to conduct investigation”, said Mr Nyongesa.

There was panic as police cordoned off the area to wait for experts to immobilise the device. Police now believe criminals who planned the attack are in the country.

“It seems they are now targeting Kenyans and in particular government officials or people seen to give support to the Somalia government. There will be a major swoop soon on these remnants hiding among peace loving Kenyans,’’ said a senior officer. The device had not been destroyed by 4pm and the area remained a no go zone. No arrest had been made.

The incident comes after two attacks in Mandera and Garissa where GSU personnel were wounded and government officials were killed. And a guesthouse was attacked last Wednesday in Elwak area. Police suspect the owner of the facility was the target owing to his links with Somalia’s

Transitional Federal Government.
The militants struck E-Guest House before proceeding to the residence of a prominent Somali, seven kilometres from the Kenya-Somalia border. Police have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any criminal elements.

How come Kenya invades Somalia and leave enemies behind the line (of buffer zone), this Operation Linda Nchi is now becoming a big shame to the KDF commanders:
Saturday Nov 5, 2011 @ 22:30 Hrs Nairobi, Kenya

On Friday night, regular police and AP camps at Hulugho were also attacked. About 30 Al-Shabaab militants struck the camp, located at the Hagardera refugee camp at around 11pm.

A fierce exchange, that lasted about 30 minutes, ensued but there were no casualties on the side of Kenya forces. The militants were eventually repulsed.

On Tuesday last week, a convoy of the Kenya army, which was going to reinforce personnel at Amuma was attacked at around 3 p.m. between Liboi and Amuma, near Hamey petrol base.

The convoy had challenged the gunmen to stop walking, at which point they opened fire.
