A soldier has died after a Kenyan Defence Forces vehicle was exploded in a landmine incident in Mandera near the Somalia border Thursday.

Four of his colleagues are nursing serious injuries in a Garissa hospital, the military said.

"On 24 November 2011 at 0700hrs, 13 KDF troops on board a service truck drove over a planted Improvised Explosive Device (IED) while on patrol duties in the general area of Mlima Fisi in Mandera," said military spokesman Emmanuel Chirchir in a statement.

"Following this incident, 5 KDF soldiers were serious injured and have been airlifted to Garissa for treatment."

Major Chirchir said one of the injured soldier "succumbed to his injuries'".

At the same time, Major Chirchir said on Wednesday that KDF had destroyed two Al-Shabaab camps in Wamaitho and Kisima near Badade town after launching airstrikes.

At least three people have been killed in explosions in northern Kenya, officials have said.

More than 27 people were injured in grenade attacks in the town of Garissa, near the Somali border. Earlier, a Kenyan soldier was killed by a bomb in the border town of Mandera.

Kenya ordered its soldiers into Somalia in October to crush al-Shabab rebels who it said had attacked its security forces and tourists inside Kenya. One of the explosions on Thursday killed two people in the local Holiday Inn in Garissa while another blast in the street killed a third, police sources said. Twelve people were seriously injured.

MILITARY SHOULD CHANGE TACTICS TO WIN THE WAR

"Military tactics are like water; water in its natural course steers away from high places and quickly flows downwards. So in war, the tactic is to avoid what is strong and strike what is weak. Water marks its course according to the nature of the ground over which it flows; a soldier works out his victory according to the enemy he is facing. He who can modify his tactics in relation to his opponent and thereby succeed in winning, may be called a heaven-boy". Sun Tzu, The Art of War.

Great comfort

These words, so eloquently stated, can apply to our forces' current position in Somalia. The promise that the Joint Task Force will not deliberately target Somalia towns and will take all measures necessary to minimise collateral damage, is a great comfort to the Somali citizens opposed to the Al-Shabaab militia.

First, it is bound to woo the moderates into supporting the Kenyan initiative. Secondly, it will deny the militia a weapon of propaganda that they have been anticipating with bated breath. Thirdly, it will give the TFG badly needed credit for being in control of the campaign.

The greatest mistake by the US and her Western allies in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Libya, was the indiscriminate bombing of towns resulting in massive civilian casualties. They then rubbed salt in wounds by dismissing the atrocities as ‘minor errors in our effort to take out the enemy'.

What they forgot is that those who suffered their ‘minor errors' were left with permanent scars physically and psychologically. The gory sights of mutilated and dismembered family members, relatives and friends only helped to breed more hatred of the US and more terrorist converts.

The ‘revolutionaries' in Libya who murdered an already subdued Muammar Gaddafi will never gain moral respect from any quarters.

Our army in Somalia must not be seen as an occupying or imperialistic army, but as good neighbours helping the TFG to rid Somalia of militias and restore peace in East Africa.

Constant evaluation

The killing of Ali Saleh Nabhan in 2009 and Fazul Abdalla in 2011 diminished Al-Qaeda's direct control over Al-Shabaab.

Consequently knowing there is nothing to fear from Al-Qaeda, the militia's kingpins in Kenya and elsewhere may have issued a fiat to their foot soldiers not to escalate a terrorist campaign against Kenya in order not hurt their billion-dollar business empire.

Our forces' tactics and modus operandi should therefore be continuously evaluated and varied to conform to the situation on the ground.

Our attention should be focused on constituting a team of security and political science experts to draw a marshal plan on how to permanently bring peace to Somalia and North Eastern Province.

A UGADAN SOLDIER ADVICE TO KDF

Me as a former uganda army captain, i know there's a big difference btn capturing large expanses of empty desert with few fishing villages and fighting in mogadishu house by house, street by street to take the most militarized city in the whole world. I don't think KDF can even hold 1 street in mogadishu for a week. Show some respect to UDDF and Gen. M7 the wily old war-horse and best military strategist in morden africa. Until KDF take down kismayu they r yet unproven.matayo71 21 hours ago

A UGADAN SOLDIER ADVICE TO KDF

This is utter nonsense!! y haven' t they (Ugandan solders) expanded the territory/mandate of Somali TFG from Mogadishu to other parts of Somalia since 2007!?? they are just locked up in Mogadishu!? when Ashabaab attacked Kampala y didn't they go after them!? cowards know how to talk of bravery!! otherwise our mission in Somalia is not just war but a humanitarian one..our solders are doing distributing food, medicine, clothing and offering free medical services to the residents of what the Ugandan solder calls 'large expanses of empty desert with few fishing villages" something they cant do!! our goal is to restore peace and order in Somalia because their is a lot of business to be done...........Y are they terrified with the little artillery's we have displayed in Somalia until a whole senior politician writes about it their daily news papers!!
We cant steep so low to compare KDF with other inferior forces of surrounding nations ..militarily we can only consider South Africa,Egypt, and Nigeria that we can have something to talk about otherwise any other "thing" will be a waste of time .An responsible nation should focus on building infrastructure and all other agents of development not war.....i always ask myself y shuld a nation like Uganda or Tanzania fight Kenya or vice vasa !! when we have not achieved our major goals of eradicating poverty, illiteracy and disease!? the founding fathers of EAC has a great vision for this region..no wonder within 10yrs of its existence EAC achieved alot compared to the same period the current EAC has been in place.
Instead of looking for things that will bring each other down ,please let us focus on those things that will build us and bring us closer..abuses,malice,hate envy and contempt wont make any of us better!! we should embrace the spirit of competitiveness, appreciate positive criticisms and be each others strength,Tanzania has a lot to offer! same to UG,RW,BR and KEN.....if we manage to have apolitical federation we shall definitely have a one Air Force,Army and Navy!! according to one military expert this will automatically make EAC a super power in Africa South Africa will be forced to go back to the drawing table!!so the silly comparison makes no sense at this stage in the context of EAC,.

Tell them Bro!! What is hurting most people -mostly Tanzanians- is that we are succeeding where even the world powers have failed MISERABLY ...and no casualties on our side to write home about..they expected failure on our part, so that they could celebrate and gossip about it every where but we have not given them that chance because our boys(KDF)have continued to disappoint them one moment after another by successfully delivering Alshabaab strong holds to Somali TFG forces...no wonder Museveni had to shamefully bury his head in the sand, ate the humble pie and came to Nairobi to beg to be included in Operation Linda nchi ,this after he realized that we meant business by summoning President Sheikh Shariff to come and declare his position on our operation in his country. Many are afraid that we will run away with the trophy of victory over Alshabaab.
Even if they hate we are used to carrying trophies anyway a fact they cant accept..their real fear is we are proving that we are the best in whatever we do....Now Somalia is a topic of discussion worldwide thanks to KDF ,our military and diplomatic offensive is unmatched. something none of this countries around us cant do even in the next millennium..and whose citizen have made it their business to talk about Kenya and Kenyans their Break fast,Lunch and Supper....they sleep dreaming about Kenya and wake up thinking about Kenya...and to have their daily meal KENYA this! KENYA that! KENYA this KENYA that!!! Perosnally am used to their insults, hatred and malice....tanzanians are not even ashamed of their country being voted the worst place to do business in EAC because of their harsh attitude towards foreigners....they are losing a lot but what can we say!? they were born to hate!! but this wont hinder us from making money (for our selves )using their very own resources they always brag to have.

'We were born to hate...'Really???This coming from a citizen whose country suffers from deep tribalism which is the ugliest form of hatred. This piece of shit sums up your IQ.
When you argue always try to be objective. No wonder your forums are places where you vent your anger and hatred...it is only in Kenyan forums where you find threads like ' We cannot be ruled by the uncircumcissed...'.So much for talking of hatred here while your hatred and tribalism is well documented and legendary.

You also have to remember that UPDF did not capture Mogadishu. It was handed to them by the Ethiopians before they departed; UPDF has not secured even a hamlet in Somalia; they still trade mortars with Al Shabab to date. UPDF can make themselves useful to KDF's plans in many ways, but strategy and military advice is not one of them. That is also the reason I insist that Kenya should only join AMISOM on condition that it takes overall command of the mission; they should not put their troops under the command of UPDF.
Garissa attack aftermath
In Garissa, police are ruling out an Al-Shabaab link in yesterday's grenade attack in which six people lost their lives. Police say the attacks may be the work of local criminals. But as Robert Nagila reports, the town remains on the edge.

[h=1]Police hold six suspects over Al Shabaab links on Lamu coast Kenya[/h]

Saturday,26th November 2011
By Patrick Beja and Cyrus Ombati

Police have arrested six men suspected to have links with the Al Shabaab.

Five suspects of Somalia origin were arrested as they sailed on a speedboat towards Lamu Island Friday at 1pm.

The sixth suspect was nabbed in Nairobi as he took a suspected injured Al Shabaab militant to a hospital in South B estate

There was tension in Lamu, where an annual cultural festival is taking place, as police arrived with the suspects on speedboats before taking them to Lamu Police Station under tight security.

Police say the suspects could have tossed their weapons into the sea when the officers on speedboats caught up with them.

Heading to Lamu
The suspects, one bare-chested, looked frail and exhausted. Lamu Deputy OCPD Joseph Sigei said police acted on a tip off from residents, who had spotted the speed boat in the morning.

"We deployed police officers after receiving a tip off and caught up with the speedboat carrying the five men as they headed towards Lamu town," Sigei said. The suspects' boat was still at sea and police officers said it could be moved to Lamu Island later.

The suspects were identified as Ahmed Omar (19), Ali Mohamed (23), Abdullahi Mohamed (24), Mohamed Abdi Mohamed (32) and Jama Mohamed Adan (27).

Sigei yesterday said divers have been dispatched with detectors to the scene to search for possible weapons the suspects could have thrown into the sea.

Language barrier
Sigei said the suspects would be questioned with the help of a Somali translator since they cannot speak Kiswahili or English.
"All five speak only Somali and we have to use a translator to interrogate them," Sigei said.

He said it was possible the suspects could be running away from the war between Kenyan security personnel and the Al Shabaab.

When information reached the police, two military choppers hovered over Lamu and around the Manda Bay to help track down the suspects.

In the Nairobi arrest, police said the suspect had come with a man with bullet wounds.

The man, identified as Hassan Mohamed Abdi, is helping the police with investigation on possible leads to Al Shabaab network in Nairobi.

"He is with us and we believe he has a lot to tell regarding this network," said a senior police officer, who asked not to be named.

Anti terrorism police said the suspect, who is also known as Hassan Aden Abdi and Hassan Garrow to his friends, was arrested along with Farid Jama, a Somali of Tanzanian origin, who was involved in sneaking the injured man into the country.

According to their statements and passport records, the injured man left Mogadishu for Hargeisa in Somaliland. From there, he took a flight to Entebbe and then came to Kenya through unmanned border points in Busia.

Updates on Operation Linda Nchi:

By OLIVER MATHENGE omathenge@ke.nationmedia.com
Posted Saturday, November 26 2011 at 14:59

Colonel Oguna added that since the operation started, KDF has lost four soldiers through enemy fire, five others died in a helicopter crash at the beginning of the operation and 11 soldiers are currently in hospital.

According to Col Oguna, in the last week, the Kenyan forces have killed at least 15 Al-Shabaab operatives and injured others in the offensive especially in the south.

He indicated that there are Kenyans among the Al-Shabaab militants who have been killed, injured or arrested. He, however, said that the Kenyan forces are not profiling those arrested for their nationalities but said that there are "foreigners" among those captured.

Col Oguna also confirmed that one soldier had died during the Mandera grenade on Thursday where a KDF lorry drove over a landmine and was blown up. (READ: Kenyan soldier dies in Mandera landmine explosion)

He added that the four other soldiers who were injured during the incident are now at the Forces Memorial Hospital.

Lone striker!! relax bro !! be patient kidogo i explain something -little history from the Kenyan perspective -about tribalism in Kenya, its true that tribalism is a challenge(not a problem!!) in Kenya. This was due to the type of politics our fore fathers adopted at Independence as a result of conflicting ideologies among our independence fathers and heroes .The changing of the constitution in 1964 abolishing the federal type of govt and consolidating all powers in the presidency from constitutional offices and other state/federal organs, resulted in unequal distribution of natural resources and opportunities! therefore whoever was in power favored his cronies and tribes...this led to every tribe fighting to have their own son or daughter at the top seat in order to benefit themselves/tribes or regions.
It is as a result of this that many progressive Kenyans suffered a lot fighting for constitutional change and this culminated in 1991's change of section 2A,which restored multiparty politics, unfortunately tribal parties cropped up..the opposition could not agree on one candidate and this led Moi to triumph in '92 and '97 general elections elections. However our journey of eradicating tribalism started in '02 when Odinga a luo endorsed Kibaki a kikuyu for president something that many could not believe!!coz they were perennial rivals! The objective was to change the colonial constitution that was mutilated many times to only benefit those in power.
The election of Kibaki in '02 showed that Kenyans could overcome tribalism and all of us had good intentions for this country..we proved that all was possible(yote yawezekana) even though we added 'bila Moi'.Our optimism and patriotism was unmatched in the whole world -we were the most optimistic people in the world then.Citizens went to an extend of arresting corrupt police officers!un believable!
Kibaki was affected by the accident he suffered prior to the elections and this affected his capability to run the govt effectively, the old cartels from Kenyatta administration ran the show...our dream was killed by this Independence old men who thought we were still living in '60's and 70's...which led to resentment against them and as you know the violence we experienced was so catastrophic and a bitter lesson for us...Kenyans especially the young generation.
The major problems that entrenched tribalism in Kenya were identified and they were all factored in the constitution we enacted on Aug 4th last year...we are the only country in the world history to have had the most consultative constitutional reform process and making a constitution in times of peace and not war.
With the new constitution nothing like tribalism will feature because real power and resources will be at county level..the governorship is more attractive than the presidency because its now less attractive.
What we are experiencing in Kenya now is what i may call in medical term 'healing crisis' where a the patient's symptoms appear to worsen before becoming better......The differences we have now is a matter of opinions and ideologies..and the main reason why we differ so much is because of the fact that we are a Thinking Nation made up of Real Thinking People....unlike you where only one person does the thinking and a whole population says YES .That's y you cannot liberate yourselves-despite having a vibrant young generation-from the shackles of CCM ,whose ideologies has made Tanzania to lag behind when it would be sitting among nations that matter in the continent...!you are still living in '60/70's where you had every excuse for your problems-Kenya.
I have all reasons to believe that you were born to hate!! look at the venom you throw at Kenya and Kenyans at any given opportunity!! sometimes i live in Tanzania-among you- and i see it for myself!! your attitude towards anybody Kenyan!!!!!! nkt!! i cant believe..a place i think i can enjoy listening to pure swahili ..leaves me feeling a total strange and unwanted!! but that will not deter us from coming and making money in Tanzania ..if you cant use your resources..we will do it! it does not matter how harshly your authorities will treat our peace loving, creative and hard working entrepreneurs/business people, we thrive in those conditions..
You are the wrong person to judge my IQ! where did you get the capacity to do it.!!!?? if i may ask.The fact is Tanzanians should and must change their attitude towards Kenyans!! you have no option!! we treat you with all the respect you deserve but you leave us disappointed, you prove to us by your own course of action that you are not worth of our respect...but we will not be discouraged..we will civilize and intellectually upgrade some of you, those will be willing to change!!
When you read or hear Kenyans abusing each other...know that i might be fun!! we call it "muchongoano" we appreciate our diversity in that way....but at this stage tribalism is illegal in Kenya...we may have some few elements here and there that are still tribal but with time they will find that they are isolated from the right thinking citizens....Our generation will change this country..wait from 2013 God willing and you will c the giants we are made of.
We want you to stop the hate...raise above it!! its for your own benefit ,your children and your children s children or else they may not be able to fit in the type of EAC we will have....i feel at home in Uganda but a total stranger in Tanzania! while your citizens here; traders- dealing in second hand clothes-house maids , wanganga wa kienyeji from different areas of TZ(pemba, zanzibar, musoma etc) are loved and respected here..we deserve the same respect and treatment...
We know the major problem in Tanzania are South Africans...so long us you continue licking their boots...your country's future is at stake! they will turn you against your worthy neighbours in oder for them to exploit you, your people and resources...you will be left continue saying your usual mantra!,naomba this naomba that! Learn how to take charge of your country and economy!! AWAKE!!
I am saying this with great concern, without any ill motive but my own sincere observations...while we Kenyans have our own weaknesses to overcome...you must understand you have a long way to go...we are not islands in this world..if You love each other as you brag about,y don't you show it to your neighbors!!? at least for your benefit!!
