Kenya declares war on Al Shabaab!

[h=3]FOUR AMERICAN PETROLEUM GIANTS HAD AGREEMENTS WITH THE AFRICAN NATION BEFORE ITS CIVIL WAR BEGAN. THEY COULD REAP BIG REWARDS IF PEACE IS RESTORED[/h] [h=4]By MARK FINEMAN
[/h] (Mark Fineman, died in Baghdad in September 2003 of a heart attack. He was 51 years old. He was also a great journalist, and a lot of fun to hang out with. He is missed.)

DATELINE: MOGADISHU, Somalia
Far beneath the surface of the tragic drama of Somalia, four major U.S. oil companies are quietly sitting on a prospective fortune in exclusive concessions to explore and exploit tens of millions of acres of the Somali countryside.
That land, in the opinion of geologists and industry sources, could yield significant amounts of oil and natural gas if the U.S.-led military mission can restore peace to the impoverished East African nation.
According to documents obtained by The Times, nearly two-thirds of Somalia was allocated to the American oil giants Conoco, Amoco, Chevron and Phillips in the final years before Somalia's pro-U.S. President Mohamed Siad Barre was overthrown and the nation plunged into chaos in January, 1991. Industry sources said the companies holding the rights to the most promising concessions are hoping that the Bush Administration's decision to send U.S. troops to safeguard aid shipments to Somalia will also help protect their multimillion-dollar investments there.

Endelea hapa ukipenda: It is all about oil in Somalia-Ethiopia.

Wewe mwenyewe una laaana .......:eyebrows:..... bahati mbaya hujijui !!!

Lugha chafhy ya nini weye! Weye unatetea Al Shabab?

The military incursion in pursuit of Al-Shabaab extremists across the borders right inside Somalia is obviously of great significance for both regional and international security.

The jihadists from across the world, who have exploited the lack of effective government to make Somalia the base of Terror Inc., are a menace way beyond the borders of that lawless country.

Therefore, eliminating them cannot be just a Kenyan duty, but the responsibility of the international community.

The regional security bloc, Igad, is showing strong support for the Kenyan initiative, as is the African Union. From further afield, expressions of support from the United States, the European Union, the United Nations and various countries and regional blocs, must go beyond tepid words and “put their money where their mouths are”.

To be meaningful, support must translate into actual resources. The campaign needs money, bullets and soldiers on the battlefront. However, even as we canvass international support, we must never forget that this military effort was launched primarily to secure Kenya’s security interests.

Therefore, we must not allow others with their own agenda to hijack it. I have Israel in mind. True, the Jewish State has for decades been a firm ally where security interests have converged. Israel has been a true friend and has always responded promptly when assistance was required.

For years, some of Kenya’s elite military and police units have benefitted from Israeli training and expertise. The Kenyan and Israeli security partnership has, for years, served for mutual benefit, but common sense and geopolitical reality demand that these links be managed discreetly.

The fact that Al-Shabaab claims to be pursuing Islamic Jihad does not make our necessary war against it part of Israel’s own campaigns in the Middle East and elsewhere.

In that regard, Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s visit last week to Israel and the pledge he secured of support on the battle against Al-Shabaab was a veritable PR disaster.

It provided the murderous group with the perfect propaganda tool, and it quickly went on the offensive with a campaign designed to depict the Kenyan incursion as part of a Christian-Jewish conspiracy against Islam.

African Union Mission in Somalia (Amisom) spokesman Lt Col Paddy Ankunda told Daily Monitor that the meeting in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia discussed the modalities of a joint operation between the Kenya Defence Forces and Amisom to rout the militants.

The meeting, Lt Col Ankunda said, was a follow-up on last week's agreement by the leaders of Kenya, Uganda and Somalia to launch a joint onslaught against the militants.

Presidents Kibaki, Yoweri Museveni (Uganda) and Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed (Somalia) met in Nairobi last week and agreed to join forces in the war against the militants. (READ: Joint Africa force to hunt militants)

It was not clear whether Amisom troops would team up with the Kenyan forces and Transitional Federal Government fighters to uproot Al-Shabaab from their bases in Southern Somalia.

Currently, Amisom troops are fighting Al-Shabaab in Mogadishu while Kenyan troops and Somali federal government fighters are concentrating on Southern Somalia.

Lt Col Ankunda said an offer by Kenya to send soldiers to Amisom would be considered. He warned that the militants had intensified attacks on Amisom positions in Mogadishu but said they would be defeated.

This comes is after Ugandan and Burundian Amisom troops killed 25 Al-Shabaab militants in fresh battles in Mogadishu on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Kenyan military spokesman Major Emmanuel Chirchir has warned that the militants planned to release a video clip showing allegedly captured Kenyan soldiers being executed. He said this was part of the propaganda campaign against the operation.

He said the relationship of the Kenyan and Somali military with the local people in the areas where Al-Shabaab have been flushed out continues to thrive.

"Based on this, we received concrete information of an arms trade and Al-Shabaab infiltration which were countered successfully," he said in a statement.

He added that they have received information that Al-Shabaab are planning to release a video clip showing the execution of ‘a person or people' alleged to be Kenyan troops captured during Operation Linda Nchi, the statement added.

This is a strong indication that the careerist army KDF (Kenya Defence Forces) does not have capacity, ability and means to wipe out Al Shabaab without help from the battle harden troops of Ethiopia, Uganda and Burundi.

Actually the converse would make more sense. Kenya is the new player militarily in Somalia. All those others have been there, some even making return trips, for years and have failed to wipe out Al Shabab from Mogadishu, let alone Somalia; Al Shabab is still around after all these years of trying. It appears that battle hardened troops will not get the job done; it is going to require more smarts, the type that you can only find in a professional and well trained military. If KDF joins AMISOM, they should insist on taking overall command of the mission in Somalia.

The battle hardened Ugandans and Burundians who have been in Somalia for over 3 years and only control an area of 20 sq km are better than KDF who have been in Somalia for slightly over a month and control an area of over 700 sq km in Al-Shababs heartland and with far fewer troops?

. I would be hardened too if I spent the last 3 years exchanging mortars with Al Shabab. At some point they have to stop hardening and get some work done or go home.

There are no special forces, may be in the daily nation front pages. Chuck D and Flavor Flav of Public Enemy crew once said "Don't believe the hype"

Muslims oppose Israel intervention in Somalia

Tuesday, 22 November 2011 00:14 BY ALPHONCE GARI
waislamu-kenya.jpgNO WAY: CIPK secretary general Sheikh Muhamad Dor (L), treasurer Sheikh Management Unit chairman Omar Mushamu (R) after the meeting.

The Council of Imams and Preachers in Kenya is opposed to the Israel Military involvement in the war against al Shabaab due to what they termed as historical misunderstandings. They claim it could contribute to more terrorism attacks and place Kenya as one of the target by the countries opposed to Israel.

Both Kenya and Israel have shared experiences of terror attacks and it is feared that their intervention could cause more harm than good. CIPK Chairman and Nominated MP Sheikh Mohamad Dor say the move would attract the terror AlQaeda, Taliban,Palestine and others who are against the Jews turning the country to be like the warring Afghanistan.

Addressing journalists in Malindi Sheikh Dor said Kenya should stick with its calls for support from the IGAD countries and vowed to fight back and prevent any attempt of interventions by the Israel military or marines.

The Israel had promised to send experts to conduct anti-terror trainings to the Kenyan security personnel on how to prevent any attack by the al Shabaab in the country.

"As leaders we 100 percent support the Operation Linda Nchi in Somalia and would like security forces in the sea to be increased and expanded but we oppose the initiative by the Israel government come to Kenya and offer anti terror trainings,'' he said.

The Nominated MP said the Muslim community want the Israel to keep off from the operations as there was already enough forces doing a good job.

He reminded the government of the Norfolk hotel and Kikambala hotels terrorist attacks that targeted Israel nationals saying the same could return and create more loss of lives for innocent people. "As Kenyans lets completely avoid working with the Jews we have enough forces and talents to execute the operations.'' he said.

Sheikh Dor who was accompanied by the CIPK treasurer Sheikh Hassan Omar said any intervention be it direct or indirect could create a vacuum that shall lead create a bigger war. "As Kenyans and the 10th parliament we do not want such operations Kenya may turn out to be like Somali or Afghanistan,'' he said.
