Mr Odinga has a four percentage point lead over Mr Kibaki
Kenya's opposition has claimed victory in presidential elections, and urged President Mwai Kibaki to admit defeat to prevent the spread of violence.
Official figures gave challenger Raila Odinga a four percentage point lead over President Mwai Kibaki, with three-quarters of the vote counted.

Kenya's electoral chief said results from some rural parts had been delayed.

Rioting has broken out in some opposition strongholds, where people feared their votes were being abused.

The head of the country's election commission, Samuel Kivuitu, said that early on Saturday afternoon, with 159 of Kenya's 210 constituencies tallied, Mr Odinga had 3,726,240 votes, to Mr Kibaki's 3,416,139 - around 49.5% to the challenger and 45.3% to the president.

Mr Kivuitu admitted there had been problems establishing results from some areas.

He warned that "if we don't get the results quickly, we will have to announce what we have".

NAIROBI, Kenya (CNN) -- Opposition leader Raila Odinga's party claimed Saturday that it had won the most closely fought election in Kenya's history and asked President Mwai Kibaki to concede defeat.

The party's number two official, Musalia Mudavadi, made the announcement at a press briefing.

"In view of the growing anxiety and restlessness in the country over the extended delay in releasing the presidential results by the electoral commission of Kenya, we now call on the outgoing president to acknowledge the will of the Kenyan people and concede defeat," Mudavadi told reporters.

Kenya's electoral commission has not yet announced official results of the election. It is expected to do so later Saturday.

But the slow pace of the vote counting has sparked violence in some parts of the country.

Mudavadi said Odinga had received 4,215,437 votes to Kibaki's 3,748,261 -- figures he said came from party representatives at polling stations across the country.

The delay comes from rules requiring that ballots be hand counted on site and then sent to Nairobi for verification before results can be announced.

The lag in the revelation of the results is blamed for the outbreak of sporadic violence in some areas.

Roaming gangs armed with machetes and other homemade weapons burned shops and broke into the homes of their political opponents Saturday in Kibera, the largest slum in Kenya's capital.

CNN Producer Kim Norgaard and his crew witnessed gangs looting and then burning several stores, and visited the home of a local organizer of one of the ruling parties that had been set on fire early Saturday morning.

The man was taken to the hospital with machete wounds, Norgaard said.

People's homes are being targeted according to their political affiliations, and armed gangs blame rival ethnic groups affiliated with local political parties for the violence.

Police are out on the streets but seem outnumbered and unable to completely stop the burning and looting, Norgaard observed.

Kibaki faced a serious challenge from Odinga, a flamboyant politician who for weeks has accused his rival of corruption. They are allegations Kibaki has faced since soon after he came to power five years ago.

While many Kenyans say they are tired of the accusations and are hungry for change, many others credit Kibaki with keeping the country's economy strong.

Many others, however, don't feel they have benefited from the economic boom. Odinga has openly appealed to them to vote out the incumbent so they can share the wealth.

Tatizo ni kwamba data tulizokuwa tunapata zilikuwa zinarushwa na KTN na hazikuwa ni official, na hata Nation Media jana walikuwa wanasema hizo results zilikuwa provisional. Kwa hiyo sasa hivi nadhani wameamua kuweka results za ECK moja kwa moja, hiyo inaweza kuwa sababu ya kura za Kalonzo kupungua.
