Kenya Election 2007: Outcomes

Kenya Election 2007: Outcomes

Lets wait for the death toll to reach 800,000 so that the UN can send in its troops to stop the massacres in Kenya; may be the old Dallaire may have a comeback to the East African region after the failed UNAMIR in Kigali; and may be this time it'll be USA troops leading cos of their interests in Kenya (with their army men always there it will be convenient to use them); may be the Alkaida men will have a reason to come back to East Africa in the pretext of defending Muslim rights against US (remember Raila's covenant with the Muslim Association); and may be the recently closed down refugee camps in Tz will open to let the flow of Kenyan refugees in; and you know what, UNHCR will employ more short-term staff, and probably the nearly closing down UNICTR in Arusha will not close after all, with another genocide so close...and with some white guys so busy looking for a place to dump their unemployed men and women...and with British friends of US having their white settlers in need of protection in Kenya..who knows...What seems to be a Kibaki vs Raila + the majority of Kenyans right now could very likely turn out to be a web of confusion within which any interested country and group will take the opportunity to its advantage...So soon, we are hearing stories of Uganda's involvement..and where there is Uganda you can count all those countries and groups in the region who are anti-Museveni; and with the US and UK interests in Kenya you can name all those who are for and against them

Lets not take this things as a Kenyan issue. The moment some big countries have an interest in a country, the affairs of that country ceases to be a national issue; to the extent that, the end results of the seemingly national issue is determined not by the Kenyans in this matter, but by all those other countries and groups that have made it their business to intervene in the name of peace/reconciliation/humanitarian assistance and what have you.

I might be seen to be a hardcore pacifist here but am just looking at the experience. We cannot equate whats happening in Kenya today with what the black South Africans were doing years back;or any other fight for democracy/freedom that happened centuries back: history has changed; global interests have changed, and so are the means and ways used by big nations to defend their interests in small countries; and so, we must also change our thinking and attitude to take into account all those factors.

-Today Red Cross will have no work if there is no disaster; and who owns red Cross?

-Then, today the outdated weapons made for the World Wars will have no dumping place if there is no war in the peripheral countries; do we get them for free? and do we use them for hunting birds?

-Today the Capitalist vs Communist war is not fought like the old days (dont tell me every country is a capitalist country; even one person in a country aspiring for presidency, and having communist/socialist ideas is enough threat to some big guys) Raila is not liked by the US, why? he is not liked by Museveni, why? and he is liked by some countries, why?

-Today any conflict in a country tainted with Islamic ideology or having Islamic factions is seen and treated as a global issue in the name of the fight against terrorism. The US have every reason to interfere and take the matter into its hands in Kenya because of the attack on its embassy years back; and because of the Coastal Islamic factions; and most importantly, because of the Raila's Covenant with them.

-Today the affairs of any country in Africa that has something of interest in the West is not its own affairs...its everbody's affair...we have ceased to be independent countries

In my view, what we are applausing now as a fight for democracy in Kenya could well be another Iraq or Afghanistan. Not Rwanda, cos at least in Rwanda there was no US interference..of course because there was no Islamic-terrorist flavour in it

Time will tell

Mwendapole you are very right, but flip the next page, dont you think we Africans very much understand what is at stake? dont you think that the western powers take advantage of our greedy and selfishness? dont you think if at all Kibaki and his power/wealth hungry clique were reasonable to understand what is at stake they could have evaded all these calamities befalling wananchi? and insteady built a better Kenya?

As an African, I say it again, we are the best enemy of our progress. The time has come to stop shifting our misfortune to the west. All countries have their national interests and will always be ready by any means to protect them such as USA so is China, so is Russia, Iran, Korea Venezuela among others. We have to know that we live in a very changed world, where everybody is ready to exploit any opportunity likely to increase his clout in international spheres.

what kibaki did was a day time robbery and here we come complaining if the west takes advantage of the chaos to entranch their agendas! Kibaki anakimbilia miaka 80 lakini jiulize, is it worthy kweli anayoyafanya?

Of all countries look at South Africa what Mbeki is doing! he still wants to cling to power and now the unfolding episode between him and Zuma, kesho na kesho kutwa ukiona damu inaanza kumwagika upya South Africa tutasema kuna mkono wa mtu?

Hapana Africa we should grow up! These empty rhetorics of democracy and rule of law will do us no favour if we are not really commited to build a better Africa.

Tulishalaaniwa. We cant think beyond our noses. So is CCM everybody looks how he will enrich himself and his family! Wala usishangae, thats the way most corrupt and backwards looking societies behave. Now what is the better reflection of our communities if the elites here in JF among others can make the same arguments? Iam afraid we shall continue to be an embarrasment to the human race.

Hapana Africa we should grow up! These empty rhetorics of democracy and rule of law will do us no favour if we are not really commited to build a better Africa.

We are talking the same language here.
I said yesterday that our proplem is that we never learn; that is, African countries nevr learn..or may be we do but as you said, our greedy and selflishness drive us crazy.
Kibaki ought to have foreseen the outcome of his grave sin, for it was open for everone to see; but for his own selfish reasons, he wnt ahead and did it, maybe hoping that mizimu ya kwao itamlinda.

Raila as well has to play his cards right; if he took to the streets the same day immediately after the announcement probably when Kibaki was busy swearing himself into presidency, then he would have won the worlds sympathy..and probably this bloodshedding would not have happened.

By calling a rally at this time when hundreds of people have died he is painting himself bloody red, much to the advantage of his adversary. Like it or not, when people are dying and he is advocating for a mass rally, that is tantamount to advocating for genocide; and that taints his image and he loses the sympathy of the international community.

It is for us Africans to determine our lives; if we do it in such a way that we play in the hands of the few western countries we have ourselves to blame..you named them right, greedy, selfish..and this makes them short-sighted; inabaki historia, kwamba 'this could have been prevented', or 'It was unnecessary war' or 'who is to blame' by then; a country would have ceased to be what it was

Keil kama hii habari ni kweli, basi we have another disaster in place!!! My God.....Africa tunamalizana wenyewe kwa wenyewe. Jamani, when will some sanity prevail? Inasikitisha kwa kweli!

Kenya's Election: Another sad image for Africa!

Friday 4 January 2008 01:30.

By Panther Alier

January 3, 2007 - I am sitting here writing with tear coming down my face; another stable state in Africa going to state of anarchy! And more disappointing is H.E. Mwai Kibaki calling for others to use their sense obligations to Kenya's constitution, for the sake of stability, but falling short of demonstrating his own obligation by taking appropriate lead on the deteriorating conditions in Kenya today. The leader of African Union has called off his visit to Kenya. Other African leaders are keeping silent because they feel guilty of the same offend or they are in state of wait-and-see. Kenyans alike are working toward bringing down their own beloved country! One wonders if any single Kenyan knows what they are getting themselves into. But, whatever the case is, Kenya has been torn and effects of this event will continue to be felt for decades, if not, centuries to come.

I was a refugee in Kenya. I had something important to teach Kenyans having to flee from war situation. Kenyans, in general, have seen what living as a refugee means. It is my best hope that they understand what they are getting themselves into. Not that I expect any Kenyan to read this message right now, but I feel a sense of obligation to remind Kenyans using my story for the nine years I have lived in their country. It is a story of bribery. Bribe was institutionalized such that even the police chiefs would agree with their men/women to do the job so that by the end of the day they each have kitu kidogo (something) for tasker (beer).

At one point, I was traveling to town of Lokichokigio, a small town at border of Kenya and Sudan. I came across so many stopping points where Kenya's police had set up to solicit money from the refugees that traveled between Lokichokigio and Kakuma refugee camp. After bribing myself out of the police from the first two police stations, I ran out of money to bribe the last station. Unfortunately, running out of the money was not a language Kenya's police understood. They mistaken the situation I was in for being in denial: they thought I was denying them what was rightfully theirs.

I began to pay heavily for the mistake. I got hit in the face; a blow that threw me for a hard landing. I arose after a moment of the state of consciousness. This time, I wanted to die like a man. My hand was well-placed in the air-ready for good hit on the Kenyan policeman. I had heard, before, Kenyans referring to us (refugees) as dogs: dogs in African sense. So this time with my hand up, I was prepared for what could possibly be the last slab on human face or wherever my hand landed on that policeman. But, my cousin who was traveling with me then saved my life. He interrupted by first taking a hit, then wrestling me down.

I looked up and the policeman was standing with his rifle ready to go off. Suddenly, the voice interrupted. It was the chief that sat under the acacia tree on well-placed stones waiting for collected bribes. He came and grabbed me in the arm and pulled me to the roadside, little away from the crime scene. The chief asked me why we, the southern Sudanese are fighting the Arabs from our country? He went on making himself clear that the reasons the southern Sudanese are fighting is to "own and eat the land". "But it would not be just eating soil", he said. "You will learn to eat from people like we do here". He went on advising me to work on my temper. "You would have died like a dog had your cousin not been there" he said.

Now, I am sitting here, switching between reading online and watching news from the TV on Kenya. I am disturbed by the development. No single report is encouraging. There is widespread level of violence. Nairobi is becoming a ghost town at night. Kisumu is brought down close to rabbles. Churches are becoming the target. The President that has lost credibility is calling for calm. The opposition leader is rallying the rule of mobs. I hope Kenyans understand what dying like dogs really means. But, above all, Africa's image of democracy is tarnished.

why are some people having perssimistic and cynical ideas. why dont they give an example of Ukraine, but rather you compare Kenya with Iraq.

Iraq and Kenya are distintfully two different countries with different perception on politics and thier political backgroung are not similar either.

A piece of advice to this group embrace a revolution like this with a positive attitude. the results will perplex you, you just wait and see.

Chadema kupinga Kibaki kwa maandamano

Na Muhibu Said

When Genocide takes place the one who gets the blame is the killer and not the advocator of the rally.

CUF iliitisha maandano na serikali ilipinga and people were killed and the blame went to the government and not to Prof Lipimba and his collegues.

President Mwai Kibaki has broken his silence over the unrest gripping Kenya by making a televised appeal for calm.
Mr Kibaki said that once the violence ended he would be prepared to speak to the opposition, who claim he was wrongly credited with election victory.
