allAfrica.com: Tanzania: Germany Offers Hefty Budget Grant
Germany has extended a grant of 176 million Euros (about 380bn/-) to Tanzania. The funds will cover three years and are the largest amount Germany has ever committed to support Tanzania in its development endeavours.
In line with that, the German Government will also extend a grant contribution of 18 million Euros (28bn/-) to support immunization programmes in Tanzania. The Minister for Finance and Economic Affairs, Dr Wiliam Mgimwa, and the German Ambassador to Tanzania, Mr Klaus-Peter Grandes, signed the bilateral grant agreement in Dar es Salaam.
Speaking shortly after the signing ceremony, Dr Mgimwa said that the agreement, which comes under bilateral development cooperation, will see 18 million Euros going into general budget support for three years. The Public Financial Management Reforms programme will have two million Euros; the Water Sector will get 45 million Euros and the Health sector will be allocated 42.5 million Euros.
He mentioned other programmes as the Energy (26 million Euros), Natural Resources (31.5 million Euros), National Audit Office (3.5 million Euros), Local Governance (6.5 million Euros) and Study and Expert Fund (one million Euros). Dr Mgimwa said that the grant will help implementation of the programmes and contribute significantly to the National Strategy for Growth and Reduction of Poverty and in turn improve the social economic well-being of the people.
The minister reaffirmed the government's commitment towards implementation of the programmes and projects. He said that close monitoring would be made to ensure the quality of work meets the acceptable professional standards. On his part, Ambassador Klaus-Peter Brandes highlighted the excellent bilateral cooperation between Germany and Tanzania.
"Today we have signed a historic commitment. Over the last five decades, German bilateral cooperation with Tanzania has amounted to almost 1.8 billion Euros. "I am happy to state that today Tanzania counts among the largest beneficiaries of German development cooperation in sub-Saharan Africa," he said.
The ambassador stated further that Germany would continue to work together with Tanzania in order to achieve the common goal of fighting poverty, improving the quality of service delivery for all Tanzanians particularly in remote and rural areas.
Both Governments agreed that the main areas of support for this grant of 190 million Euros covering the period 2012 - 2014 will remain - according to the priorities of the Government of Tanzania - Water, Health, Natural Resources and now, Energy, including Renewable Energies.
In addition, Germany will continue to provide General Budget Support. The German Ambassador emphasized the expected impact of these agreements. "The population of several urban centres in Tanzania will get access to clean water.
Immunization will be accelerated, so that every citizen can be vaccinated. A new Baobab Maternity of the CCBRT in Dar es Salaam will be constructed to improve birth outcomes," he added.
