Rombo District - a Typical Example of Superb BRN Execution
By Deo Mushi
ONE of the benefits that a journalist enjoys compared to other professions is the opportunity to travel widely both in and out of the country.
I can boast to have seen a lot in the last 22 years that I have been practising journalism. I must admit that of all the places I have visited to cover news or feature stories related to socio-economic development in this country, there is no place that has impressed me like Rombo District in Kilimanjaro Region.
Compared to other places in the country, this is the only district that has made sure that education and health sectors are made a priority.
At this particular time when the government is trying to implement Big Results Now (BRN) initiative, I think Rombo District should be taken as an ideal example, simply because it has improved the social economic lives of people living in that particular area. BRN is part of government's effort to transform the country from a low to a middle-income economy.
This is a comprehensive system of implementation that focuses on six priority areas of the economy like energy and natural gas, agriculture, water, education, transport and the mobilisation of resources.
People need quality education and good health to implement BRN and I shall show how Rombo is achieving that. Rombo District successfully campaigned for the Community Health Fund (CHF), thus witnessing a dramatic change in health services.
Many people can easily see doctors when they fall sick. People in Rombo with their CHF membership cards are easily attended to at Huruma Hospital, which is the District Designated Hospital (DDH) and Ngoyoni Hospital run by the Catholic Diocese of Moshi.
Health centres like Tarakea, Usseri Mashati, Mengwe and Keni also accept CHF cards. Rombo has become an exemplary case as many of its residents have joined the Fund and are now enjoying better medical services compared to other districts in the country.
