Fourteen killed and more than 450 injured - Lebanese health ministry

The number of people killed in today's blasts has risen to 14, according to the Lebanese health ministry.
That's up from nine deaths reported earlier.
Meanwhile the number of injuries has risen to 450, up from 300.

Walkie-talkies used by Hezbollah have detonated in Lebanon's south and in suburbs of the capital Beirut, witnesses say. Dozens of people have been wounded by the latest explosions, according to security sources, which come a day after deadly pager blasts.

Three people have been killed in the latest device blasts, Reuters cites the Lebanese state news agency as saying.

The deaths were reported from the Bekaa region, in the east of the country.

Our special correspondent Alex Crawford is at a funeral in Beirut for four people killed in yesterday's attacks.

She says the area is in the southern suburbs of Beirut and she heard a "small sound of something popping".

"We came out to try and found out what the sound was and people were running. People were covered in blood," she says.

"There was blood on a car.

"One young man was running and he was very stressed. He said a walkie-talkie - which the Hezbollah security people around here are using for the funeral - exploded.

"The Hezbollah people then gathered up all the walkie-talkies and have been taking the batteries out of them.

Lebanon’s state news agency says at least three people have been killed in explosions in the Bekaa area, while security sources tell Reuters that dozens of people have been wounded in a series of new explosions across Lebanon.

Hand-held radios used by the Hezbollah terror group detonated late this afternoon across the country’s south and in the southern suburbs of the capital Beirut, a security source and a witness said.
At least one of the blasts took place near a funeral organized by Iran-backed Hezbollah for those killed the previous day when thousands of pagers used by the group exploded across the country.

“A number of walkie talkies exploded in Beirut’s southern suburbs,” the source says, with Hezbollah-affiliated rescuers confirming devices had exploded inside two cars in the area.

The initial attack has been blamed on Israel, which has not commented.
