Boss: System switch was vital to victory

Brendan Rodgers credited his Liverpool players for responding effectively to a subtle tactical switch en route to claiming a narrow 1-0 victory over Swansea City.

The Reds had been second best throughout the first half at the Liberty Stadium as Garry Monk's side prevented the visitors from establishing a rhythm.
It was a different story after the interval, however. Control was theirs, chances were being created and a fifth straight Barclays Premier League win was in reach.
Three points were indeed secured on 68 minutes when Jordan Henderson forced a fortunate strike that looped over Lukasz Fabianski to seal another success.
Rodgers said: "It was a wonderful demonstration of the character and resilience in the team, especially [after] how we played in the first half.
"Any system you play in the game doesn't work unless you have that ability to work, and we just weren't anywhere near it in the first half. But that resilience and character kept us in the game.
"We knew we were going to be better in the second half, we changed the structure of the team a little bit and then I thought in the second half we really dominated the game."
Expanding upon his analysis, the boss added: "People who know me and have watched my teams regularly from when I was a youth coach, my teams have played 4-3-3 and 4-4-2 diamond.
"If you look at Swansea tonight, they were a diamond and we were a box in midfield, and they got between us quite well I felt because they've got good players and they passed it well.
"We've prepared that in training for if we have to flip and you see the difference it can make. The players went smoothly into it.
"You push the sides further up, so it's a 3-4-3 but in a different format. We pushed Raheem [Sterling] higher up the pitch onto the full-back, [Alberto] Moreno went right high and then the diamond occupies the spaces in midfield.
"They play with two front players, but we still go three versus two at the back and then that allows us to have the extra numbers. It worked well for us."
A stubborn defensive display by Liverpool and several impressive saves by Simon Mignolet ensured a sixth consecutive clean sheet on the road in the Premier League.
That resolve at the back has been pivotal to the Reds' remarkable recent surge in form, which now stands at 13 games unbeaten in the division since mid-December.
"I'm proud whichever way [we win]," continued the Northern Irishman. "We work very hard first and foremost on how we defend.
"It's not just about the style, you have to have a foundation and the foundation for that is how we press the game.
"You can see whenever the team isn't quite pressing how we want then it becomes a little bit broken, like it was in the first half.
"We pressed the game and shortened the pitch much more in the second half. We got the goal and had opportunities to get a few more.
"We know that we have the capacity to win games. Our away record over the last two years is really strong.
"You see the resilience in the team and when we're not playing so well, we've still got that organisation and resolve to keep a clean sheet.
"In the second half we were much more fluent in our passing and movement. We played the most part of the game in their half. We didn't have too many scares in the second half.
"It's a great victory, it's a difficult place to come here and we're very happy."
Steven Gerrard was named on the substitutes' bench at Swansea, following more than a month on the sidelines with a hamstring problem suffered in February.
The captain was introduced to the action in the second period and placed in central midfield to add extra composure and a point of distribution in the chase for a winner.
Rodgers said: "What we did in the second half was run more without the ball, that notion for the team that you've got to move not just when you have the ball, you've got to run off it.
"We talked at half-time about penetrating and options for the guy in possession. Steven came on and offered that calmness.
"We switched to the diamond in the second half. He came in and fitted into the bottom of that. His calmness and control was very important in that."
Asked how the No.8's return to match fitness will be managed, the boss explained: "You have to pay respect to the team.
"They've been playing very, very well and getting results. Collectively over the last three months we've been in great form.
"But, of course, Steven has been out for a considerable period of time. He's fit [now] and you saw him in the game today how important he is when he came on."
It is now hugely congested at the top of the Premier League table.
The fifth-place Reds trail Manchester United by two points in the final Champions League qualification berth, while Arsenal and Manchester City are only three and four ahead respectively.
On Sunday, United travel to Anfield and Rodgers insisted his charges can approach a huge encounter with great confidence given the changes since their last meeting.
He said: "We can now really look forward to that. Tonight, whatever, we needed a result - so to get the victory was a huge result for us.
"At home, we look forward to going into this game - they're massive games, great games to be involved in.
"Hopefully, it'll show the strides we've made since we played them a number of months back. For that, I have to give immense credit to the team.
"We've put ourselves in a great position. There is still a lot of work to go so we'll recover now and get ready for the weekend.
"[The target is] to finish as high as we can. Everyone talks about fourth but it's the same every year for me. We do the best we can do.
"Manchester City's result at the weekend gives us an opportunity to finish second, so our mentality, the run and confidence we have at the moment we're just going to take that into every game and see where it takes us.
"We've clawed our way slowly back into it. We knew it was going to take time being so many points behind, but to get back to this level of consistency is very, very impressive.
"We've still got a lot of work to do, but we're on the right pathway."

Liverpool can't expect loyalty from Raheem Sterling if they don't offer him the same £150,000-a-week deal as Daniel Sturridge

The Raheem Sterling contract situation at Liverpool is coming to the boil, after the latest snub from the player’s representatives, and an indication that talks won’t resume until the summer.
Brendan Rodgers says he’s relaxed but I find that hard to believe. He won’t want to lose Sterling, a talent that he can rightly be proud of, and justifiably claim he has helped turn into a star quality player.
But I can’t understand why Liverpool have consistently put the message out that there will not be a problem with the Sterling situation. The outcome of that policy is that Sterling looks greedy – why do the football club want to make one of their star players look bad in the eyes of the supporters?

So now there is a situation locally with fans and the press are questioning his representatives, with the Liverpool Echo declaring this week that Sterling ‘needs to ask who is looking after his best interests.’
The answer to that question is simple. In football terms, Liverpool have looked after him. In the same way QPR looked after him before he was snapped up by the Reds, and in the same way Real Madrid might look after him if they choose to pay big money.
Liverpool Football Club can’t expect too much loyalty from a player who was happy to leave QPR after seven years at Loftus Road. What goes around comes around, I guess.
In financial terms - his agent is looking after his best interests, obviously. He’s got a family, he wants to set himself up comfortably for the rest of his life, and I can’t think of a reason why a player shouldn’t be allowed to do that.

Sterling’s contract runs out in 2017 and there is no way Liverpool will want this impasse to continue. If he even approaches the final year of his current deal without this being resolved, Liverpool could lose out.
The days of a player accepting less than he feels he is worth because he is at a great club that gave him a big opportunity are long gone. It’s naive to think otherwise.
A five-year deal of £100,000 a week has been rejected by Sterling. Daniel Sturridge is on £150,000 a week.
Is there a reason why Sterling shouldn’t be on the same as Sturridge?
Sterling is younger, but I’m not sure why age should come into it. Sterling has proved he can be a match winner, a key player and is a regular starter for Liverpool – same as Sturridge. Sterling’s fitness record is considerably better, which is unfortunate for Sturridge, but when an agent is negotiating on behalf of his player it is definitely something which counts in Sterling’s favour.
The big difference between the careers of Sturridge and Sterling is that Sterling has proved himself at a much younger age. Why should he accept a less lucrative deal because of that? Makes no sense.
If a player is committing to a club long-term, then the deal has to be right. The figures are ridiculous – but this is the Premier League where players' salaries are abnormally high. That’s not news. And to expect Sterling to launch his own one-man crusade for fairer wages in football is laughable

It’s a harsh reality for some who haven’t quite caught up with how modern football works, but Sterling is an excellent footballer, and his agent is working for his player to get the best deal for him.
By making the offer of £100,000 a week, Liverpool Football Club have told Sterling that he is two-thirds of the player Sturridge is. If the agent had accepted that then Sterling would surely have sacked him.

Article haitoi full picture ya factors za kulipa... bei ya kununua mchezaji (studge was cheap), issue ya liverpool kumlea since he was 15 mi muhimu, they developed him as a player... kama article inalinganisha sterl na studge... harry kane watamwka wapi?? he has just signed a 50K per week contract na hana makeke, because he believes in his qualities na kwamba in a year's time atapata a new contract ya kumfikisha hata kilo based on the progress. the boy should know kwamba if he is good, kila baada ya two years atapata contract review, and that is ok

Kuna shida, naamini kabisa madalali wanacheza upatu pale and the boy atalost tu mwishowe he is not ready yet, tumeona kwa akina Mcmanaman, Owen Ince, Rush etc.

I wouldnt pay a penny above what Liverpool have offered, comparing sturridge to Raheem sio fair based on the two footbal paths, age and potential, studge cant go higher from now, atakua anashuka tu keshamaliza while raheem will always go higher and he will reach 150K and even beyond in two years

Hapo red iyo ndio shida hata BR aliizungumzia

BR: "As a manager, you want to give everything to the player to help them. But ultimately, if a player or their representative – probably more so their representative – decides that the player needs to move, that is normally what happens.

DS tangu anarudi Kutoka majeruhi, his pace and movements zimepungua, He needs time kurecover, Kakaa nje muda mrefu!!

But, Siyo wa kuanza kwenye big matches, atakuwa anaslow mashambulizi!!

I'd go with RS upfront..

Absolutely correct. BR anatakiwa awe anamwanzisa DS benchi mpaka momentum yake itakaporudi.

Sasa hivi Cou huwa ana-struggle sana kumtafuta aliko DS kwa vile hayuko active pale mbele.

RS is not an out-and-out striker lakini huwa akicheza pale kati zile darting runs zake behind the back line huwa zinawa-destabilise sana defenders na ku-create gaps kwa Cou kupiga zile penetration passes zake. Kinachotuumizaga RS akicheza pale kati ni kuwa huwa anafanya kila kitu sahihi ndani ya 18 (with and without the ball) except scoring. Ungetemea akina Lalana, Balo, Borini, etc wawepo pale for a kill but tumeona they are all ineffective.

Kwa kweli Lalana doesn't do it for me on consistent basis. Balo is Balo. Lambert is Lamber. Borini, well, is Borini.

Smalling aims for second place

Chris Smalling has said Manchester United are capable of overtaking Manchester City and finishing second in the Premier League.
Chris Smalling: Believes Manchester United can overtake City

United eased to a 3-0 win over Tottenham at Old Trafford on Sunday to move two points behind City, who lost to Burnley on Saturday. Louis van Gaal's side are also one point behind third-placed Arsenal, who visit Old Trafford on the penultimate weekend of the season.

And Smalling is convinced finishing as runners-up is a realistic ambition for United.

"Yes, I think we could, especially after City's result on Saturday," he said. "It is all very close.

"I think it's very open all the way up to second place and we will be aiming for that, especially when we are playing those teams coming up.

"We want Champions League football back here. It's a must. Fourth is the minimum but when it's there, second is a realistic target and if we keep on performing like that I don't see why we can't give it a good push."

United face Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday, then Aston Villa, City and Chelsea, and Smalling is excited at the prospect of matches against sides in and around them in the table as well as an improving Villa.

"These games are six-pointers," he said. "We can do ourselves a favour and do our rivals big damage as well.

"Sunday was the first step. It was the perfect time to put in a performance like that, especially with our run of fixtures."

Meanwhile, United midfielder Michael Carrick has backed Van Gaal as manager.

"The players are behind him, of course," said Carrick. "It is just that results prove everything, don't they?

"We can improve on the training pitch, but it is all about what we do on game day really. And Sunday was a big step for us.

"I think it will give everyone a big boost and big shot of confidence. And it shows we are moving in the right direction."

Nimeipenda hii sana kutoka kwa Manager, tunataka nafsi ya pili. Ha ha ha United waje wamejiandaaaa

Liverpool’s manager said: ‘The aim is to finish as high as we can. Everyone talks about fourth but it’s the same every year for me.
‘We do the best that we can do and the Manchester City result at the weekend gives us an opportunity to finish second so our mentality, the run and confidence we have at the moment we are just going to take that into every game and see where it takes us.’

Tangu tushinde 2-0 away to Southampton, mimi nilishasema kuwa second spot is no longer an outside chance for LFC...it should be our target!

Mimi naona acha RS apewe tu mshahara mzuri (maybe not exactly anaotaka lakini something close to Sturridge's).

Then the limelight & pressure will be all over him to deliver. Remember a certain Wayne Rooney??
