Liverpool Under-19s were left stunned by Basel's late flourish as they suffered a 3-2 defeat in their UEFA Youth League clash.

Jerome Sinclair's second-half double appeared to have secured back to back European wins for the young Reds following their 4-0 hammering of Ludogorets on matchday one.

However, from a position of strength at 2-1 up with three minutes remaining they surrendered the initiative as Albian Ajeti headed home an equaliser for the Swiss outfit and then Cedric Itten bagged a last-gasp winner.

A major disappointment for Academy director Alex Inglethorpe will be the fact that two of Basel's goals came from set-pieces – a weakness which has also proved the first-team's undoing at times this season.
