Raheem Sterling will not hold contract talks until summer, says Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers ahead of Manchester United clash

Raheem Sterling has put contract talks on hold until the summer, Brendan Rodgers has confirmed.
Liverpool have been in negotiations for several months with the 20-year-old and his agent over a deal to replace the old one which expires in 2017.
And the Reds boss confirmed it will not be resolved until after this season's conclusion.
'Not between now and the end of the season,' said Rodgers. 'It has been made clear by Raheem's agent. I repeat that this is the best place for his development and it is clear.'
Sterling is set to start as Liverpool face a huge clash with Manchester United at Anfield on Sunday, with a place in the top four of the Premier League at stake.
'It is an important game,' continued Rodgers. 'I don't think the result will have an overriding factor but it will certainly give you a great boost psychologically if we were to win. We want to win, we want to be competitive. '
Rodgers also confirmed that captain Steven Gerrard, who returned from injury at Swansea on Monday night, will have a big part to play between now and the end of the season, but refused to say whether he would be guaranteed a start or not

'It is very simple with me and Steven,' said Rodgers. 'I think it has been really unfair on the boy.
'When he was out injured, people tried to sensationalise a story about him getting in the team. It might not be the story you want but he is committed to the team.
But his support to Jordan Henderson and Joe Allen has been fantastic. I see people trying to predict the team but he hasn't been fit. He is going to have a big part to play, and is a wonderful, wonderful player who has so much still to give.
'Even when he doesn't start, he comes off the bench and gives calmness to the team. Playing or not playing, Steven's professionalism is outstanding. He is fit, available and whether he starts or comes off the bench, he will be ready to make a contribution.'

The Liverpool Offside caught up with Pele at a Subway promotional event in London.

Ahead of another entry in English football's biggest rivalry, a mixture of a commercial partner, Liverpool legends, and a sporting behemoth illustrated the enormous reach of both Liverpool Football Club. The unlikely scene for all this was a Subway restaurant in central London.

Pele is arguably the greatest football player of all time and is undoubtedly a sporting legend. His name is synonymous with the Brazilian national team and a near-mythical era of sporting success on the international stage. Being a Global Ambassador for Subway naturally puts him in closer proximity to Liverpool as the restaurant chain is the club's official training food partner.

Pele and Liverpool are footballing institutions and will attract brand names looking to do business with the best football has to offer. Liverpool should be associated with the biggest and best names in the game. When Liverpool play rivals of note at home and in Europe, something has to be at stake. Last season, the title was contested for. This season, places in domestic cup finals and a potential place in the Champions League occupy the thoughts of Liverpool fans.

There aren't any English clubs left in European competitions this season after Everton exited the Europa League on Thursday. The eventual winners of this season's Champions League will most likely be Bayern Munich, Barcelona, or the holders Real Madrid. Liverpool's illustrious history ranks highly across the continent, but Merseyside's finest cannot yet compete with Europe's biggest powers. Brendan Rodgers will hope to qualify for Europe's top club competition next season to continue his resotration of the club as a Champions League regular before mapping out loftier ambitions.

The football icon was speaking on the importance of living a healthy and active lifestyle as well as the forthcoming game between Manchester United and Liverpool where he'll be a guest. Liverpool legends Robbie Fowler and Steve McManaman were also in attendance sharing their views on a variety of topics, but The Liverpool Offside was able to hear the thoughts of Pele on the game and a player who could shape its outcome.

"Coutinho has a great future," Pele told The Liverpool Offside when asked about the Liverpool number ten's prospects in the game. "He's a good player and I think he's going to get nice experience playing in Europe, because a lot of top players play in Europe to become more experienced. But it's too early to talk about the national team but he has the talent on the ball to play for the national team."

The 74-year-old also expressed his desire to see a good game between Liverpool and Manchester United, but Pele has a mutual business partner with Liverpool so maybe it's best that he doesn't take a neutral position on Sunday. However, many football fans across the world with no allegiances to either club would probably agree with his stance.

"In Brazil, we find the games (between Liverpool and Manchester United) are big and it should be a nice game," Pele enthused. "It doesn't matter who's going to win; it's going to be a great match."

Unfortunately the secrets to Pele's full head of hair and his favourite sandwiches weren't discovered, but his presence on Sunday adds more glamour to what looks to be one of the biggest games of the season. Victory for either side could be the vital ingredient in a push for a place in the top four.

Liverpool's Brendan Rodgers: I cannot predict Raheem Sterling contract plans

Brendan Rodgers admits that he does not know whether Raheem Sterling will sign a new contract at Liverpool, but hopes the forward will commit his future to the club.
Sterling, 20, has a contract with Liverpool which runs until 2017, and discussions to extend it until 2020 began in October.
Rodgers said on Jan. 22 that agreement on a new deal was "very imminent," but the England winger has still not signed, and further discussions have now been delayed until the end of the season.

"I can't predict what other people are thinking," he said. "The club have received advice from his adviser and Raheem has mentioned it to me. That's it."
Sterling has been linked with a move to Manchester City this summer, but Rodgers remains confident of keeping the youngster at the club.
"I've had a good conversation with him and our communication is always open," he said. "I hope now it puts to bed whether or not he is going to sign the contract.
"I think that's the intention. The boy has been advised by his adviser and I have had a good conversation with Raheem. He has made clear what his adviser said to him and that is it."

With Liverpool two points off a Champions League qualifying spot, Rodgers denied that the deadlock was down to the winger waiting to see whether the club will return to the competition next season.
"I'm not sure it is about that," he added. "I think it is purely so he can concentrate on his football. I think he is a young kid that now every time he is interviewed or asked it is about his contract.
"What we have been able to do here with Raheem over the last few years is get him to think about nothing from his first waking moment but football. Now it is all about his contract and that is for him and his adviser.
"He is a good boy and I know he loves being here and as I said our talk now is only really about football. His representatives with the club can hopefully get something sorted."
