HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL DAY
Remembers those that died or whose lives were changed beyond recognition during the holocaust, and all genocides that followed.
Holocaust memorial Day is marked on 27th January to remember all those who were murdered during the Holocaust. The 27th of January marks the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau in 1945.
Auschwitz-Birkenau was the largest of all the Nazi death camps, where over 1.1 million men, women and children were murdered, over 90% of them being Jewush.
Between 1941 and 1945, six million Jewish men, women and children were murdered by the Nazis and their collaborators, resulting in the genocide of the world' Jewish population. Their attempt to murder all the Jews in Europe shook the foundation of civilisation.
Holocaust Memorial Day is a time when we seek to learn the lessons of the past and recognise that genocide does not just take place on its own - it's a steady process which can begin to grow if seeds of discrimination, racism, and hatred are not acknowledged, prevented and destroyed. There is still much to do to create a safer future, and the responsibility lies with all of us.
