In a public meeting on May 28, 2024, Makonda expressed surprise and concern over their continued presence in office. Arusha DC Director Selemani Msumi confirmed that the matter is now with security agencies, and Human Resources Officer Elizabeth Ngobei stated that the suspension letters had already been issued.
Thirteen health sector employees, including the Chief Medical Officer, from Arusha District Council in Arumeru have been suspended due to allegations of embezzling Sh600 million. This decision follows an order from Arusha Regional Commissioner Paul Makonda to allow for a thorough investigation. The investigation was prompted by concerns that these employees continued to work despite the serious accusations against them.
Additionally, the Arusha Regional PCCB is investigating the District Council Land Officer, Shevednaze Mwakyokola, for allegedly soliciting and receiving a Sh5 million bribe. The investigation began after Makonda witnessed the bribery incident firsthand.
Makonda highlighted the widespread corruption within the council and instructed the accused to step aside immediately. He plans to request additional support from the Prevention and Combating of Corruption Bureau (PCCB) and a re-audit of council funds by the Controller and Auditor General (CAG).
