THIRTY-SECOND WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR A

FIRST READING
In the eyes of the foolish they seemed to have died.
WISDOM 2: 23 - 3: 9

God created man for incorruption, and made him in the image of his own eternity, but through the devil’s envy death entered the world, and those who belong to his party experience it. But the souls of the righteous are in the hand of God, and no torment will ever touch them. In the eyes of the foolish they seemed to have died, and their departure was thought to be an affliction, and their going from us to be their destruction; but they are at peace. For though in the sight of men they were punished, their hope is full of immortality. Having been disciplined a little, they will receive great good, because God tested them and found them worthy of himself; like gold in the furnace he tried them, and like a sacrificial burnt offering he accepted them. In the time of their visitation they will shine forth, and will run like sparks through the stubble. They will govern nations and rule over peoples, and the Lord will reign over them forever. Those who trust in him will understand truth, and the faithful will abide with him in love, because grace and mercy are upon his elect, and he watches over his holy ones.

The Word of the Lord.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM
Psalm 34: 2 - 3, 16 - 17, 18 - 19 (R.) 2a.

R/. I will bless the Lord at all times.

I will bless the Lord at all times,
Praise of him is always in my mouth.
In the Lord my soul shall make its boast;
The humble shall hear and be glad. R/.

The Lord turns his eyes to the just,
And his ears are open to their cry.
The Lord turns his face against the wicked
To destroy their remembrance from the earth. R/.

When the just cry out, the Lord hears,
And rescues them in all their distress.
The Lord is close to the broken-hearted;
Those whose spirit is crushed he will save. R/.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION
John 14: 23

Alleluia.
If a man loves me, he will keep my word, says the Lord; and my Father will love him, and we will come to him.
Alleluia.

GOSPEL
We are unworthy servants, we have only done what was our duty.
LUKE 17: 7 - 10

At that time: Jesus said, “Will any one of you, who has a servant ploughing or keeping sheep, say to him when he has come in from the field, ‘Come at once and sit down at table’? Will he not rather say to him, ‘Prepare supper for me, and put on your apron and serve me, till I eat and drink; and afterward you shall eat and drink’? Does he thank the servant because he did what was commanded? So you also, when you have done all that is commanded you, say, ‘We are unworthy servants; we have only done what was our duty.

The Gospel of the Lord

Morning Reflection (QT) - John 17:1-26

Introduction

Today’s reading is a prayer often referred to as Jesus’s “High Priestly Prayer,” and it appears only in John’s Gospel.

After Jesus’s final discourse with his disciples, and prior to his betrayal and arrest, he addresses God in prayer.

Jesus acknowledges that he has completed the work God sent him to do, and he intercedes on behalf of his disciples and all future believers.

Reflection

Because Jesus prays that all who believe be united by their faith in him, the prayer serves as a call to Christian unity. What does Jesus ask of God (verses 1, 5, 11, 15, 17, 20-21)? What does knowing that Jesus prayed for you mean to you?

Pray

Dear Jesus, you came to break down walls that divide us. Unite us in heart and mind to follow you and give glory to God.

In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.

John 17:1-26

John 17:1

When Jesus had said this, he raised his eyes to heaven and said, “Father, the hour has come. Give glory to your son, so that your son may glorify you,

John 17:2

just as you gave him authority over all people, so that he may give eternal life to all you gave him.

John 17:3

Now this is eternal life, that they should know you, the only true God, and the one whom you sent, Jesus Christ.

John 17:4

I glorified you on earth by accomplishing the work that you gave me to do.

John 17:5

Now glorify me, Father, with you, with the glory that I had with you before the world began.

John 17:6

“I revealed your name to those whom you gave me out of the world. They belonged to you, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word.

John 17:7

Now they know that everything you gave me is from you,

John 17:8

because the words you gave to me I have given to them, and they accepted them and truly understood that I came from you, and they have believed that you sent me.

John 17:9

I pray for them. I do not pray for the world but for the ones you have given me, because they are yours,

John 17:10

and everything of mine is yours and everything of yours is mine, and I have been glorified in them.

John 17:11

And now I will no longer be in the world, but they are in the world, while I am coming to you. Holy Father, keep them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one just as we are.

John 17:12

When I was with them I protected them in your name that you gave me, and I guarded them, and none of them was lost except the son of destruction, in order that the scripture might be fulfilled.

John 17:13

But now I am coming to you. I speak this in the world so that they may share my joy completely.

John 17:14

I gave them your word, and the world hated them, because they do not belong to the world any more than I belong to the world.

John 17:15

I do not ask that you take them out of the world but that you keep them from the evil one.
John 17:16

They do not belong to the world any more than I belong to the world.

John 17:17

Consecrate them in the truth. Your word is truth.

John 17:18

As you sent me into the world, so I sent them into the world.

John 17:19

And I consecrate myself for them, so that they also may be consecrated in truth.

John 17:20

“I pray not only for them, but also for those who will believe in me through their word,

John 17:21

so that they may all be one, as you, Father, are in me and I in you, that they also may be in us, that the world may believe that you sent me.

John 17:22

And I have given them the glory you gave me, so that they may be one, as we are one,

John 17:23

I in them and you in me, that they may be brought to perfection as one, that the world may know that you sent me, and that you loved them even as you loved me.
