THIRTY-SECOND WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR A

MEMORIAL OF SAINT ALBERT THE GREAT, Bishop and Doctor of the Church

FIRST READING
Listen, O kings, that you may learn wisdom.
WISDOM 6: 1 - 11

Listen, O kings, and understand; learn, O judges of the ends of the earth. Give ear, you that rule over multitudes, and boast of many nations. For your dominion was given you from the Lord, and your sovereignty from the Most High, who will search out your works and inquire into your plans. Because as servants of his kingdom you did not rule rightly, nor keep the law, nor walk according to the purpose of God, he will come upon you terribly and swiftly, because severe judgement falls on those in high places. For the lowliest man may be pardoned in mercy, but mighty men will be mightily tested. For the Lord of all will not stand in awe of any one, nor show deference to greatness; because he himself made both small and great, and he takes thought for all alike. But a strict inquiry is in store for the mighty. To you then, O monarchs, my words are directed, that you may learn wisdom and not transgress. For they will be made holy who observe holy things in holiness, and those who have been taught them will find a defence. Therefore set your desire on my words; long for them, and you will be instructed.

The Word of the Lord.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM
Psalm 82: 3 - 4, 6 - 7 (R.) 8a.

R/. Arise, O God; judge the earth!

Do justice for the weak and the orphan;
Give justice to the poor and afflicted.
Rescue the weak and the needy;
Set them free from the hand of the wicked. R/.

I have said to you, “You are gods,
and all of you, sons of the Most High.
And yet, like men you shall die;
You shall fall, like any of the princes.” R/.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION
1st Thessalonians 5: 18

Alleluia.
Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.
Alleluia.

GOSPEL
Was no one found to return and give praise to God except his foreigner?
LUKE 17: 11 - 19

On the way to Jerusalem Jesus was passing along between Samaria and Galilee. And as he entered a village, he was met by ten lepers, who stood at a distance and lifted up their voices and said, “Jesus, Master, leave mercy on us.” When he saw them he said to them, “Go and show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went they were cleansed. Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice; and he fell on his face at Jesus’ feet, giving him thanks. Now he was a Samaritan. Then said Jesus, “Were not ten cleansed? Where are the nine? Was no one found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?” And he said to him, “Rise and go your way; your faith has made you well.”

The Gospel of the Lord.

Evening Reflection (QT) - 2 Chronicles 5:1-14.

Introduction.

King Solomon celebrates God’s faithfulness to the people of Israel by bringing the Covenant Box to the newly built Temple in Jerusalem.

The priests carry it into the Most Holy Place, and God’s glory fills the Temple.

You may wish to read 2 Chronicles 2:1—3:17 for a description of the building of the Temple in fulfillment of God’s promise to David (see 2 Samuel 7:1.
2-13).
Reflection
The Covenant Box was sacred to the people of Israel.

What was inside the Covenant Box? What objects in your community of faith do you consider sacred? How was God’s presence made known when the priests were leaving the Temple?

You may wish to compare this description with Exodus 40:34-38. In what ways do you experience God’s presence in your life?

Pray.

Lord God, I render my heart as a dwelling place for your Spirit and a temple for your steadfast love. Reign in my heart forever.

In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.

2 Chronicles 5:1-14

2Chronicles 5:1

When all the work undertaken by Solomon for the house of the LORD was completed, he brought in the votive offerings of David his father, putting the silver, the gold, and other articles in the treasuries of the house of God.

2Chronicles 5:2

Then Solomon assembled the elders of Israel and all the heads of the tribes, the princes in the ancestral houses of the Israelites, to Jerusalem to bring up the ark of the LORD’s covenant from the City of David, which is Zion.

2Chronicles 5:3

All the people of Israel assembled before the king during the festival of the seventh month.

2Chronicles 5:4

When all the elders of Israel had arrived, the Levites took up the ark;

2Chronicles 5:5

and they brought up the ark and the tent of meeting with all the sacred vessels that were in the tent. The levitical priests brought them up.

2Chronicles 5:6

King Solomon and the entire community of Israel, gathered for the occasion before the ark, sacrificed sheep and oxen too many to number or count.

2Chronicles 5:7

The priests brought the ark of the covenant of the LORD to its place: the inner sanctuary of the house, the holy of holies, beneath the wings of the cherubim.

2Chronicles 5:8

The cherubim had their wings spread out over the place of the ark, covering the ark and its poles from above.

2Chronicles 5:9

The poles were so long that their ends could be seen from the holy place in front of the inner sanctuary. (They cannot be seen from outside, but they remain there to this day.)

2Chronicles 5:10

There was nothing in the ark but the two tablets which Moses had put there at Horeb when the LORD made a covenant with the Israelites after they went forth from Egypt.

2Chronicles 5:11

When the priests left the holy place (all the priests who were present had purified themselves regardless of the rotation of their various divisions),

2Chronicles 5:12

the Levites who were singers, all who belonged to Asaph, Heman, Jeduthun, and their sons and brothers, clothed in fine linen, with cymbals, harps, and lyres, stood east of the altar, and with them a hundred and twenty priests blowing trumpets.

2Chronicles 5:13

When the trumpeters and singers were heard as a single voice praising and giving thanks to the LORD, and when they raised the sound of the trumpets, cymbals, and other musical instruments to “Praise the LORD, who is so good, whose love endures forever,” the cloud filled the house of the LORD.

2Chronicles 5:14

The priests could no longer minister because of the cloud, since the glory of the LORD had filled the house of God.

Morning Reflection (QT) - John 16:25-33

Introduction.

Today’s reading concludes the “Farewell Discourse” which began with John 14 (see the reading from February 10).

While Jesus tells the disciples that the world will make them suffer, he assures them that he has defeated the world and that God loves them.

Reflection.

What is the victory that Jesus speaks of? In verse 28, Jesus tells the disciples that he is leaving the world and returning to God the Father. He came from God and was sent into the world to make God known (see John 1:18; 14:7), and his death and return to God will complete his work (see John 17:4; 19:30). How has Jesus made God known to you?

Pray.

Holy Jesus, you have defeated the world and I claim this victory in your name.

I believe that you came from God and you have made God known to me and assured me of God’s love. Thank you, Lord Jesus!

In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
John 16:25-33

John 16:25

“I have told you this in figures of speech. The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures but I will tell you clearly about the Father.

John 16:26

On that day you will ask in my name, and I do not tell you that I will ask the Father for you.

John 16:27

For the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have come to believe that I came from God.

John 16:28

I came from the Father and have come into the world. Now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father.”

John 16:29

His disciples said, “Now you are talking plainly, and not in any figure of speech.

John 16:30

Now we realize that you know everything and that you do not need to have anyone question you. Because of this we believe that you came from God.”

John 16:31

Jesus answered them, “Do you believe now?

John 16:32

Behold, the hour is coming and has arrived when each of you will be scattered to his own home and you will leave me alone. But I am not alone, because the Father is with me.

John 16:33

I have told you this so that you might have peace in me. In the world you will have trouble, but take courage, I have conquered the world.”
