Prayers of Gratitude.

Dear God, I come before you with a heart full of gratitude.

I am grateful for the blessings you have showered upon me every day.

I am grateful for the gift of life, for the air that I breathe, for the food that I eat, for the water that I drink, for the shelter that I have, and for the people that surround me with love and support.

Thank you for guiding me through my darkest moments and for being my light when I stumble in the darkness.

I pray that you continue to bless me with your grace and love.

In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.

Morning Reflection (QT)

Introduction

Today’s reading picks up the storyline from verse 20 in Luke’s Gospel.

Jesus is named and circumcised on the eighth day after his birth according to the Law (Leviticus 12:3) to indicate belonging to the Lord and as a sign of the covenant God made with Abraham (see Genesis 17:11-14).

Mary and Joseph perform the ceremony of purification and bring Jesus to Jerusalem to be dedicated to the Lord.

At the Temple, they encounter Simeon and Anna, two elderly and devout people who testify to God’s faithfulness in speaking about Jesus.

Reflection

Leviticus 12:4-8 outlines the purification ritual for women after childbirth which Mary and Joseph follow according to the Law.

Mary and Joseph’s sacrifice of two doves or pigeons (verse 24) indicates their status as poor. In what ways do we offer sacrifices today?

How are Simeon and Anna described?

For what were they waiting (verses 25-26, 38)? What does Simeon say to Mary (verses 34-35)?

Upon hearing his words, what might Mary have thought?

Pray

Lord God, you keep your promises, and your promised Messiah has come to bring us your salvation.

He is the light who reveals your will for us.

Help me to grow in the knowledge of you and do what is pleasing in your sight. Glory to you, O Lord!

In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.

Luke 2:21-38

Luke 2:21

When eight days were completed for his circumcision, he was named Jesus, the name given him by the angel before he was conceived in the womb.

Luke 2:22

When the days were completed for their purification according to the law of Moses, they took him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord,

Luke 2:23

just as it is written in the law of the Lord, “Every male that opens the womb shall be consecrated to the Lord,”

Luke 2:24

and to offer the sacrifice of “a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons,” in accordance with the dictate in the law of the Lord.

Luke 2:25

Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon. This man was righteous and devout, awaiting the consolation of Israel, and the holy Spirit was upon him.

Luke 2:26

It had been revealed to him by the holy Spirit that he should not see death before he had seen the Messiah of the Lord.

Luke 2:27

He came in the Spirit into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus to perform the custom of the law in regard to him,

Luke 2:28

he took him into his arms and blessed God, saying:

Luke 2:29

“Now, Master, you may let your servant go in peace, according to your word,

Luke 2:30

for my eyes have seen your salvation,
Luke 2:31

which you prepared in sight of all the peoples,

Luke 2:32

a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel.”

Luke 2:33

The child’s father and mother were amazed at what was said about him;

Luke 2:34

and Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, “Behold, this child is destined for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be contradicted

Luke 2:35

(and you yourself a sword will pierce) so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.”

Luke 2:36

There was also a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was advanced in years, having lived seven years with her husband after her marriage,

Luke 2:37

and then as a widow until she was eighty-four. She never left the temple, but worshiped night and day with fasting and prayer.

Luke 2:38

And coming forward at that very time, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were awaiting the redemption of Jerusalem.

Reading I

1 Jn 3:7-10

1John 3:7

Children, let no one deceive you. The person who acts in righteousness is righteous, just as he is righteous.

1John 3:8

Whoever sins belongs to the devil, because the devil has sinned from the beginning. Indeed, the Son of God was revealed to destroy the works of the devil.

1John 3:9

No one who is begotten by God commits sin, because God’s seed remains in him; he cannot sin because he is begotten by God.

1John 3:10

In this way, the children of God and the children of the devil are made plain; no one who fails to act in righteousness belongs to God, nor anyone who does not love his brother.

Gospel

Jn 1:35-42

John 1:35

The next day John was there again with two of his disciples,

John 1:36

and as he watched Jesus walk by, he said, “Behold, the Lamb of God.”

John 1:37

The two disciples heard what he said and followed Jesus.

John 1:38

Jesus turned and saw them following him and said to them, “What are you looking for?” They said to him, “Rabbi” (which translated means Teacher), “where are you staying?”

John 1:39

He said to them, “Come, and you will see.” So they went and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day. It was about four in the afternoon.

John 1:40

Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two who heard John and followed Jesus.

John 1:41

He first found his own brother Simon and told him, “We have found the Messiah” (which is translated Anointed).

John 1:42

Then he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon the son of John; you will be called Cephas” (which is translated Peter).

Morning Prayer.

Lord, I pray for your humility as I go about my day.

I ask that you would help me to be humble in my interactions with others, and that I would be able to see my own weaknesses and flaws.

I pray that I would be able to learn from my mistakes, and that I would be able to grow in humility as I follow your example.

I trust in your humility and provision, and I pray that I would experience that humility in a powerful way today.

In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.

Memorial of Saint John Neumann, Bishop

Reading 1 - 1 Jn 3:11-21

Beloved:
This is the message you have heard from the beginning:
we should love one another,
unlike Cain who belonged to the Evil One
and slaughtered his brother.
Why did he slaughter him?
Because his own works were evil,
and those of his brother righteous.
Do not be amazed, then, brothers and sisters, if the world hates you.
We know that we have passed from death to life
because we love our brothers.
Whoever does not love remains in death.
Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer,
and you know that no murderer has eternal life remaining in him.
The way we came to know love
was that he laid down his life for us;
so we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers.
If someone who has worldly means
sees a brother in need and refuses him compassion,
how can the love of God remain in him?
Children, let us love not in word or speech
but in deed and truth.

Now this is how we shall know that we belong to the truth
and reassure our hearts before him
in whatever our hearts condemn,
for God is greater than our hearts and knows everything.
Beloved, if our hearts do not condemn us,
we have confidence in God.

Responsorial Psalm - PS 100:1b-2, 3, 4, 5

R. (2a) Let all the earth cry out to God with joy.
Sing joyfully to the LORD, all you lands;
serve the LORD with gladness;
come before him with joyful song.
R. Let all the earth cry out to God with joy.
Know that the LORD is God;
he made us, his we are;
his people, the flock he tends.
R. Let all the earth cry out to God with joy.
Enter his gates with thanksgiving,
his courts with praise;
Give thanks to him; bless his name.
R. Let all the earth cry out to God with joy.
The LORD is good:
the LORD, whose kindness endures forever,
and his faithfulness, to all generations.
R. Let all the earth cry out to God with joy.

R. Alleluia, alleluia.
A holy day has dawned upon us.
Come, you nations, and adore the Lord.
Today a great light has come upon the earth.

Gospel - Jn 1:43-51

Jesus decided to go to Galilee, and he found Philip.
And Jesus said to him, "Follow me."
Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the town of Andrew and Peter.
Philip found Nathanael and told him,
"We have found the one about whom Moses wrote in the law,
and also the prophets, Jesus, son of Joseph, from Nazareth."
But Nathanael said to him,
"Can anything good come from Nazareth?"
Philip said to him, "Come and see."
Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him,
"Here is a true child of Israel.
There is no duplicity in him."
Nathanael said to him, "How do you know me?"
Jesus answered and said to him,
"Before Philip called you, I saw you under the fig tree."
Nathanael answered him,
"Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel."
Jesus answered and said to him,
"Do you believe
because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree?
You will see greater things than this."
And he said to him, "Amen, amen, I say to you,
you will see the sky opened and the angels of God
ascending and descending on the Son of Man."

Reading I

1 Jn 5:5-13

1John 5:5

Who [indeed] is the victor over the world but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?

1John 5:6

This is the one who came through water and blood, Jesus Christ, not by water alone, but by water and blood. The Spirit is the one that testifies, and the Spirit is truth.

1John 5:7

So there are three that testify,

1John 5:8

the Spirit, the water, and the blood, and the three are of one accord.

1John 5:9

If we accept human testimony, the testimony of God is surely greater. Now the testimony of God is this, that he has testified on behalf of his Son.

1John 5:10

Whoever believes in the Son of God has this testimony within himself. Whoever does not believe God has made him a liar by not believing the testimony God has given about his Son.

1John 5:11

And this is the testimony: God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.

1John 5:12

Whoever possesses the Son has life; whoever does not possess the Son of God does not have life.

1John 5:13

I write these things to you so that you may know that you have eternal life, you who believe in the name of the Son of God.

Gospel

M 1:7-11

Mark 1:7

And this is what he proclaimed: “One mightier than I is coming after me. I am not worthy to stoop and loosen the thongs of his sandals.

Mark 1:8

I have baptized you with water; he will baptize you with the holy Spirit.”

Mark 1:9

It happened in those days that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized in the Jordan by John.

Mark 1:10

On coming up out of the water he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit, like a dove, descending upon him.

Mark 1:11

And a voice came from the heavens, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.”

Evening Reflection (QT)

Introduction.

The apostle Paul explains that Gentiles are now included in God’s plan of salvation and share in the promise that God made through Christ Jesus.

He refers to “God’s secret plan” (verse 9) when describing his outreach to the Gentiles.

Reflection.

In verse 7, Paul claims to be a “servant of the gospel by God’s special gift.”

To what does this special gift refer?

Paul refers to God’s “secret plan” or “secret” (verses 3, 5, 6, 9).

How does he explain this secret? What is his overall message to the Gentiles?

Pray.

Thank you, Lord God, that your blessings are for all people and for inviting me to share in the promises that you have made through Christ Jesus.

In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.

Ephesians 3:1-13

Ephesians 3:1

Because of this, I, Paul, a prisoner of Christ [Jesus] for you Gentiles—

Ephesians 3:2

if, as I suppose, you have heard of the stewardship of God’s grace that was given to me for your benefit,

Ephesians 3:3

[namely, that] the mystery was made known to me by revelation, as I have written briefly earlier.

Ephesians 3:4

When you read this you can understand my insight into the mystery of Christ,

Ephesians 3:5

which was not made known to human beings in other generations as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit,

Ephesians 3:6

that the Gentiles are coheirs, members of the same body, and copartners in the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel.

Ephesians 3:7

Of this I became a minister by the gift of God’s grace that was granted me in accord with the exercise of his power.

Ephesians 3:8

To me, the very least of all the holy ones, this grace was given, to preach to the Gentiles the inscrutable riches of Christ,

Ephesians 3:9

and to bring to light [for all] what is the plan of the mystery hidden from ages past in God who created all things,

Ephesians 3:10

so that the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known through the church to the principalities and authorities in the heavens.

Ephesians 3:11

This was according to the eternal purpose that he accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord,

Ephesians 3:12

in whom we have boldness of speech and confidence of access through faith in him.

Ephesians 3:13

So I ask you not to lose heart over my afflictions for you; this is your glory.

Evening Reflection (QT)

Introduction.

Today’s reading concludes the chapter with Paul’s prayer, attesting to the breadth and depth of Christ’s love—a love that Paul wants all to know.

Reflection.

Reread verses 14-19.

What is at the heart of Paul’s prayer for the Ephesians?

Consider copying verses 20 and 21 on an index card (or on a mobile or electronic device) that you can keep with you as a reminder of Christ’s abundant love for you.

Pray.

Lord Jesus, make your home in my heart so that I grow in faith day by day and stay rooted in your rich and everlasting love.

In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.

Ephesians 3:14-21

Ephesians 3:14

For this reason I kneel before the Father,

Ephesians 3:15

from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named,

Ephesians 3:16

that he may grant you in accord with the riches of his glory to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in the inner self,

Ephesians 3:17

and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, rooted and grounded in love,

Ephesians 3:18

may have strength to comprehend with all the holy ones what is the breadth and length and height and depth,

Ephesians 3:19

and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

Ephesians 3:20

Now to him who is able to accomplish far more than all we ask or imagine, by the power at work within us,

Ephesians 3:21

to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.
