Bolton v Wigan preview

Bolton have Paul Robinson back but are still missing a number of players. Robinson is available again after serving a one-match suspension but it is thought that the game will be too soon for injured pair Stuart Holden and Gretar Steinsson. Lee Chung-yong remains on international duty with South Korea while Tamir Cohen is not expected to return for this fixture following the death of his father. Joey O'Brien, Sean Davis, Ricardo Gardner and Jlloyd Samuel are all absent too. Wigan will again be without the suspended Charles N'Zogbia. Antolin Alcaraz looks likely to retain his place at the back after showing no ill-effects from a previous thigh injury when playing 90 minutes in the defeat to Newcastle on Sunday. New signing Adrian Lopez, the former Spain Under-21 international and Deportivo La Coruna defender, is expected to be on the bench. Bolton (from): Jaaskelainen, Robinson, Bogdan, Cahill, Knight, Muamba, Petrov, K Davies, Elmander, Blake, Taylor, Klasnic, Ricketts, Alonso, Moreno, M Davies. Wigan (from): Al Habsi, G Caldwell, Gohouri, Stam, Figueroa, Alcaraz, Lopez, Watson, Diame, McArthur, Cleverley, Thomas, Rodallega, Boselli, Gomez, McManaman, S Caldwell, Golobart, Mustoe, Pollitt.

Becks not back for good

The former Manchester United and England midfielder has been at the centre of fevered speculation in recent days over a possible loan move to the Premier League from LA Galaxy. Bruce has admitted he had spoken to the 35-year-old, but revealed Take That's return to the city in May, rather than football, was on the agenda. He said: "I had a word with Becks - not about football. I invited him to Take That. "If Take That can get back together then I am going to get the Manchester United lot together and have a bit of a night out. "Unfortunately, he is back in LA at that time, but I did invite him up here."

Martinez can only dream of Beckham

However he believes the England icon would be a valuable addition to any Premier League side. On the prospect of bringing Beckham to Wigan, Martinez joked: "It is done. We have already signed him! We can dream about that one." Martinez added: " You look at the experience David Beckham brings, more than anything, with England and during his time in Spain and Italy. "Any squad of players will benefit. Any player who trains with him will benefit. What he brings on the pitch is an added bonus. That can only be a positive for any team in the Premier League."

Why do Man City play better when they're in turmoil?

What is about Manchester City?
That club has a very strange dynamic. When there is transfer talk in the air (Emmanuel Adebayor, Carlos Tevez) or fights on the training ground, they frequently win 3-1 or 4-1... often away from home.
On Monday night came the news that Tevez had withdrawn his transfer request and wants to stay.
Peace and love all over Eastlands - and they promptly lose to Everton - a team so struggling for goals that the opposition rarely has to kick-off more than twice

Houllier backed by Villa chief

Villa are still hovering just above the Premier League relegation zone despite earning a valuable point at Chelsea from a 3-3 draw on Sunday and Houllier has come under fire from some supporters. But Faulkner, Villa owner Randy Lerner's right-hand man, says the belief in the Frenchman has not wavered. Faulkner said: "I believe in what we are doing. This is a great club. We know we are going to have periods of adversity when things don't go our way. "But, if you are well run, you will come through those and emerge better and stronger. "We are in it for the long term. With what happened in the summer (O'Neill's resignation), we knew it was going to be hard because there were events we weren't expecting. "But we believe in the manager and the long-term plans we have. "We want to go into the summer working with Gerard to develop the club with changes to the culture. "You must put everything in place to create and environment where you can win."

Mancini plays down title chances

City are joint top with neighbours Manchester United, although they have played two games more. And Mancini, who has previously claimed that Chelsea would stroll to the championship, feels that City's inexperience in such situations could count against them. "Arsenal, Chelsea, United and Tottenham all have more experience than us," he said. "Probably one of those four teams will win the title. "We just want to work, so we can improve and try to keep getting better."

Fletcher: City don't have the experience to win the title

Published 23:00 03/01/11 By David McDonnell

Darren Fletcher has taunted Manchester City by claiming they lack the experience and team spirit to win the Premier League.
City, who are set to bolster their title challenge with the £27million capture of Wolfsburg striker Edin Dzeko, are level on points at the top of the table with local rivals Manchester United.
But United midfielder Fletcher believes Sir Alex Ferguson's side have a crucial edge over Roberto Mancini's men as the title race hots up - because of their togetherness and knowledge of closing out title races.
"City are right there with us at the top of the league and they're winning games and looking solid defensively," said Fletcher.

"And when you've got that much money to spend and you sign that many quality players, you're always going to be a threat.
"But I think maybe the team spirit and the togetherness is still to come. It takes a while to build team spirit - it doesn't happen overnight.
"City have signed a lot of players in a short space of time. They'll still be getting to know each other and won't have created the sort of team spirit we feel we have here."
Although Fletcher acknowledged City have a vastly improved squad with the likes of Carlos Tevez, Yaya Toure, David Silva and new arrival Dzeko on board, he questioned whether they have the experience to stay the distance in the title run-in.
"Experience is important," said Fletcher. "We've been there before and we've experienced what it takes in a title run-in. It takes last-minute goals, it takes grinding out results, it takes knowing how to respond from a European game.
"We have experience dealing with all these things and it's something City haven't dealt with yet. It's all new to them. But they have a lot of quality players and when that's the case you're always a threat."
United take on Stoke tonight, knowing a win will take them three points ahead of City with a game in hand. And Fletcher said Fergie's men are ready for a physical battle with Tony Pulis's side.
"We know what to expect from Stoke," said Fletcher. "They've really consolidated themselves as a Premier League side and Tony Pulis has done a great job.
"You know you're in for a battle when you play Stoke and you have to win that battle and earn the right to play.
"It's going to be a difficult game. We experienced that at the Britannia and we're expecting more of the same at Old Trafford. They always have a go.
"They look at home in the Premier League now and they know what it's all about."

Kean backing for Ron bid

Updated Jan 4, 2011 7:15 AM ET
04/01/2011 10:56 +0100

Anuradha Desai, chairman of Venky's - who took over at Ewood Park in November - has confirmed Rovers have made a £6.2million bid for the AC Milan forward. And although it may seem fanciful that the former Barcelona playmaker would move to Lancashire Kean believes it sends out the right message to other would-be targets. "I know there has been contact made by the owners to representatives of Ronaldinho but I don't know how far down the line it is and whether it will actually happen," he said. "If any Premier League manager was asked if they wanted to sign someone who has been World Player of the Year twice they would be interested. "That is something that puts us on the map in terms of trying to bring players of that stature to the club. "Everyone should look as it as a positive because if we can attract players - maybe not that individual if it doesn't happen - but players of that stature I think it has been a long time since we have been able to do that." Rovers are believed to have offered the 30-year-old Ronaldinho a three-year £20million-plus deal. "He is keen to play in the EPL (English Premier League) and I think that goes in our favour," Desai told BBC Radio Lancashire. She stressed paying the Brazilian's wages would not be a problem. "To be precise [it is] 7.6million euros (£6.5million) for the first year and about 8.5million euros (£7.2million) for the second and third years." She also said the club had made attempts to sign former England captain David Beckham on loan from Los Angeles Galaxy, adding that the club were "open whenever he is ready to come".

Ferdinand out of Stoke clash

Published 15:02 04/01/11 By David McDonnell

Rio Ferdinand is out of Manchester United's Premier League game with Stoke tonight at Old Trafford.
Sir Alex Ferguson is understood to have decided to rest Ferdinand ahead of United's third round FA Cup tie against Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday.
Ferdinand, who missed most of last season with a back problem, has played United's last five games and Fergie has decided to give the 32-year-old a breather ahead of the visit of arch rivals Liverpool.
Chris Smalling is expected to come into the United line-up to partner skipper Nemanja Vidic in central defence.

Coyle cool over Bolton's chances of a European place

Published 17:16 04/01/11 By MirrorFootball

Bolton boss Owen Coyle insists the time for taking stock is not now but at the end of a season.
Wanderers play their first home game of 2011 tomorrow when they host Wigan, almost a year to the day since Coyle was appointed as manager.
Bolton have taken great strides over the course of those 12 months, rising out of the Barclays Premier League relegation zone to finish 14th last term and enjoying a successful start to the present campaign.
Currently lying seventh in the table, things are looking exciting for the year ahead, with the return of European football to the Reebok Stadium a realistic prospect.

Coyle, however, insists he only makes major assessments about what has passed and what might come next when a season finishes - and at the moment, his aspirations for the club have not shifted from what he was thinking last summer.
"I have the same target now as I did prior to the season starting - continued improvement for the football club," Coyle said.
"That is where we are at and how we look at it. We don't think we want to be here, there or wherever. What I want is improvement, which comes in many forms and shapes.
"Where we are just now, we have certainly been improving but we need to carry on with that and come the end of the season, that is the time when you sit down and think 'have we improved as a football club, where do we now need further improvement?'
"That is when I assess everything."
Bolton made an ultimately disappointing start to 2011 with their 2-1 defeat at Liverpool on New Year's Day, although Coyle felt his players gave a good account of themselves and that Joe Cole's last-gasp winner should have been ruled out for offside - the latest in a long line of decisions the Scot has seen as being unjust towards his team.
"If you wanted to sit down with me one afternoon I could show you a DVD of probably 16 major decisions that have gone against us this season - that led to goals, or not getting penalties or what have you," Coyle said.
"We should have had a penalty in the game at Anfield as well - there was a clear handball, and we never got it.
"If, as they say, it evens itself out, then we are due some huge decisions in the second half of the season, that's for sure.
"Don't get me wrong, as managers we are all biased and want all the decisions for our own football club.
"I totally accept that, but I think when things are as clear-cut as that, then they have got to be given."
Bolton have Paul Robinson back for the Wigan game after he served a one-match suspension but Lee Chung-yong remains on international duty with South Korea and Tamir Cohen is not expected to return for this fixture following the death of his father.
Injured pair Stuart Holden and Gretar Steinsson are also set to miss out, while there has been mixed news with regard to Coyle's long-term absentees.
Sean Davis, who missed virtually all of last season recovering from knee surgery before suffering a setback in August, has had to have another operation and will remain sidelined for some time yet.
However, Coyle is optimistic Ricardo Gardner (knee) and Jlloyd Samuel (calf) may be back in action soon.
"I would hope that Ricardo Gardner and Jlloyd Samuel will be fit by the middle of January," Coyle told Bolton Wanderers | BWFC Scores, News, Transfers, Fixtures.
"They are doing little bits and pieces at the moment and they are certainly on their way back.
"It's been a long time for those lads so we will have to make sure that we tread warily.
"Sean Davis will be a while yet. He has just had an operation and we certainly hope when he does return that he can get himself to the level that he was at in the summer and come back with a real impact.
"He won't be rushed, given everything that he has been through."
Meanwhile, Bolton have confirmed defender Andy O'Brien has completed his permanent move to npower Championship side Leeds, where he had been on loan.

Blackburn boss: Stability comes before sexy signings

Published 17:09 04/01/11 By MirrorFootball

Blackburn manager Steve Kean's blueprint for Rovers appears to differ from the lofty ambitions of the club's owners as he seeks to build a solid squad while they talk about signing Ronaldinho and David Beckham.
Venky's, the India-based poultry company, are trying to lure AC Milan's Brazil international to Ewood Park with a £20million-plus three-year contract.
And while Kean is happy to "sprinkle some magic" on his squad he is more concerned with putting together a group of players who can establish the club as consistent top-10 performers.
Having had up to nine senior players unavailable to him since taking over from Sam Allardyce less than a month ago Kean requires substance over style.

"The way we are with injuries at the moment, and the stability of the squad, hopefully we can add four or five other players and then if we can get another big name like that (of Ronaldinho) it will be the icing on the cake," said the Rovers boss.
"Once we can get all the injured players back we can get up into a bracket where we are solid and looking to push beyond the top 10 and then you can attract players easier.
"If we can get stable and into the top 10 we can then look forward to the next transfer window.
"When we spoke with the owners we said if there was a potential marquee player - and there are four or five that spring to mind and two have been mentioned in Ronaldinho and David Beckham - we would love to have them here.
"If we can get solid, reliable foundations and then sprinkle a little bit of magic on top of that then fantastic, but it certainly comes from a solid base.
"But trying to bring someone of that calibre to the club is fantastic and shows our intention to be active in this transfer market."
The very public bid to sign Ronaldinho and Beckham has been greeted with derision and ridicule in some quarters, dismissed as nothing more than a publicity stunt by Venky's.
Even Kean, speaking ahead of tomorrow's Barclays Premier League visit of Liverpool, did not sound that committed to, or confident in, the deals.
"I know there has been contact made by the owners to representatives of Ronaldinho but I don't know how far down the line it is and whether it will actually happen," said the Rovers boss, who claims he has two transfer wish-lists - one of marquee names and the other of less high-profile signings.
"But at least it shows our intent, it shows we are trying to go to a different level and that can only be a positive.
"In some areas it has been perceived as a bit of a negative but I can't see that.
"It is something that puts us on the map in terms of trying to bring players of that stature to the club.
"If we can attract players - maybe not that individual (Ronaldinho) if it doesn't happen - but players of that stature it has been a long time since we have been able to do that."
Anuradha Desai, chairman of Venky's, sounded more confident when she went public with their plans to sign the 30-year-old Ronaldinho.
"He is keen to play in the EPL (English Premier League) and I think that goes in our favour," she told BBC Radio Lancashire, stressing the Brazilian's wages would not be a problem.
"To be precise [it is] 7.6million euros (£6.5million) for the first year and about 8.5million euros (£7.2million) for the second and third years."
Desai also said the club had made attempts to secure former England captain Beckham on loan from Los Angeles Galaxy, adding that the club were "open whenever he is ready to come".
Kean is hopeful of making some signings before Saturday's FA Cup third-round tie at home to QPR but neither Ronaldinho or Beckham are likely to be among their number.
"We are looking at bringing in around four players, which is a lot of business in comparison to other clubs," he added.
"We will be having a press conference (on Friday) ahead of the QPR game and at least getting one or two bodies in before then."

Ferguson wants focus from United

Updated Jan 4, 2011 7:13 PM ET
Sir Alex Ferguson has told his Manchester United players to dismiss the critics and concentrate on reclaiming the Premier League title.
United extended their unbeaten run to 20 matches this season and opened up a three point lead over nearest challengers Manchester City and Arsenal thanks to a 2-1 win over Stoke at Old Trafford.

Yet even two excellent goals from Javier Hernandez and Nani left many feeling underwhelmed at the general performance of the team.
Not that Ferguson is bothered. He feels the best answer is for United to carry on as they are.
"We are an easy target for that kind of thing," he said.
"But we just have to dismiss it and concentrate on our ambitions and that is to win the league."
Opposite number Tony Pulis offered a more expansive summary after watching his team be undone by the same scoreline for the second time this season, on each occasion leaving the Stoke boss with a feeling of "what if".
"They know how to win," he said.
"It is a mentality that runs through the club.
"You can get used to winning and used to losing but this is almost something ingrained.
"It gives them that edge and will stand them in good stead this season because they will have a run when things don't go so well."
No one could quibble about the quality of United's goals.
Hernandez struck for the ninth time in his debut campaign, meeting Nani's low cross with a deft back-flick that took it past Asmir Begovic.
Then, after Dean Whitehead had nodded home a shock leveller five minutes into the second period, Nani clinched the points, curling home in sublime fashion after the Portugal winger had been given too much time to turn on the edge of the area.

From Hernandez in particular, it was the perfect response after the Mexican was given his chance whilst Wayne Rooney rests the ankle injury that he suffered at West Brom on Saturday.
"Of course it gives me a problem when Wayne is fit," said Ferguson.
"But that is the kind of problem you want. Over the years, the strikers I have had have always given me that problem.
"That is Chico's job. And as long as he keeps putting the ball in the net, he is giving me those problems."
Ferguson is hopeful of having two of Rooney, Rio Ferdinand and Edwin van der Sar available for the FA Cup tie with Liverpool on Sunday.
The England skipper should be amongst them given he claimed to have been rested on his Twitter page prior to kick-off.
However, his replacement, Chris Smalling, earned warm praise from Ferguson on his first Premier League start.
"You have to have faith and trust in the players," said Ferguson.
"They have earned that trust. I see them every day in training and in the games they have played in. They have never let me down.
"And Chris Smalling was excellent. At 20 years of age he is doing very well.
"I am pleased with his improvement. He is certainly the future of the club."

Manchester United 2-1 Stoke City

Updated Jan 4, 2011 7:08 PM ET
Manchester United pulled three points clear at the top of the Premier League but were forced to work hard for a 2-1 win over Stoke on Tuesday.
United's unbeaten fight for the title reached 20 matches at Old Trafford as Javier Hernandez and Nani scored the goals that sank Tony Pulis' Potters.
Dean Whitehead had headed home a shock leveller for the visitors at the start of the second half but Sir Alex Ferguson's men just about deserved their latest triumph.

It took United's tally to 19 points out of the last 21 and opened up a lead of three points over Manchester City and five on Arsenal ahead of their meeting at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday.
Yet rarely can such impressive and imposing statistics be greeted with such an underwhelming response, which is possibly the strangest aspect of a very strange season, which Hernandez at least has plenty of reason to enjoy.
When Hernandez was considering the delights that awaited in his first season at United, it is fair to assume Stoke would not have been top of his list. But long after he has returned to Mexico, he will remember his meetings with the men from the Potteries.
In October it was that jaw-dropping back header, which even a renowned exponent such as Andy Gray admitted he would have struggled to emulate in his heyday.
Tuesday night's effort was no less audacious. Nipping in front of former United defender Ryan Shawcross at the near post, Hernandez reacted quickly as Nani drilled over a low cross.
Letting the ball run behind him, he quickly flicked back his right leg and turned it at right angles, into a goal that Asmir Begovic thought he had covered.
It was Hernandez's ninth goal of the season and his second in four days.
Little wonder Ferguson had enough faith in the striker not to worry too much about the absence of Wayne Rooney, who watched on from an executive suite in the company of Stereophonics frontman Kelly Jones.
Rio Ferdinand was missing too, rested ahead of Sunday's FA Cup tie with Liverpool, which allowed Chris Smalling to make his first league start.
Not that the England Under-21 defender had that much to do as United dominated proceedings without carving out too many clear-cut opportunities.
Dimitar Berbatov had one after Ryan Giggs' shot deflected into his path off Shawcross.

But, although the Bulgarian controlled brilliantly, under pressure from Marc Wilson, he prodded wide rather than into the same corner Hernandez found shortly afterwards.
The overwhelming feeling at half-time was of the hosts once again scraping by without really exuding any of the class expected.
And five minutes after the restart they were pegged back as Whitehead nipped between Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra to nod home Tuncay's cross unchallenged.
It was the centre-piece of a period of genuine Stoke pressure and brought the Potteries outfit their first Old Trafford goal since 1980.
And for while a nervousness and anxiety betrayed United's play.
Berbatov ranted at Nani for not passing to him quickly enough as another home attack broke down in its infancy.
Yet if their actual play leaves many doubters unconvinced about their actual merits in comparison to Ferguson teams of old, the Red Devils' durability cannot be questioned.
And when Danny Collins failed to get tight to Nani as he collected Hernandez's pass on the edge of the area, the Portugal winger turned swiftly before finding the bottom corner with a precise curling left-footed shot.
Although there has been the odd outstanding performance, such as the one that brought seven goals against Blackburn, it is upon such magical moments that United's season has been built thus far.
The late introduction of Michael Owen for his first appearance of the winter, and his run to reach a Nani cross that did not bounce kindly for him in stoppage time, suggests Ferguson does have options that Arsenal and Chelsea in particular cannot match.
It was the presence of another former Liverpool man, Jermaine Pennant, that the crowd chose to highlight as attention switched to Sunday's FA Cup tie with the ailing Merseysiders, which will presumably not peter out as this did.

Ancelotti 'lucky' to avoid being fired

Updated Jan 4, 2011 6:10 PM ET
Carlo Ancelotti admits he is lucky to have kept his job as Chelsea manager after presiding over the worst run of form under the reign of owner Roman Abramovich.

The Blues have taken just 10 points from their last 10 Barclays Premier League matches and just two from their last five away games - a poor run which has seen them slide to fifth place.
They face Wolves at Molineux on Wednesday night when a win is vital if they are not to lose touch with the Premier League pace-setters.
When the former AC Milan boss was asked if he would have been sacked by now if he was still in Italy, he replied: "I am a lucky man. I understand that a lot of coaches are sacked with results like these."
However, Ancelotti wants to be judged on his results at the end of the season.
He added in the Daily Mail: "When you go to a restaurant, you have to pay the bill when finish your meal.
"It's the same here. We have to pay the bill at the end of the season. At the end the club can judge me. The best food would be the Champions League. I've tasted it sometimes and it's good."

But if Ancelotti is not to pay too high a price come May, he needs his team to find some consistency, having been let down by conceding late goals in recent games.
"Against Everton we conceded in the 86th minute," he said. "We missed a penalty at Tottenham and conceded in the last minute against Aston Villa. We have lost six points in the last minute and with those six points we'd be top of table."
The January transfer window could provide a boost, but Ancelotti does not want to make any panic buys - and has ruled out a move for David Beckham.
"When the Champions League comes back, we need to have a squad without injuries," he said.
"If the club does buy, it will not be just for this year. We are looking for young players but ones with experience who don't need time to adapt.
"Beckham is a fantastic player and could be good for Tottenham, but we're not interested. In that position we have good players.
"The young players are in the squad because we trust them."

European giants want to sign Bale

Updated Jan 4, 2011 6:02 PM ET
Gareth Bale's Italian agent insists three Serie A outfits are interested in signing the Spurs ace - but only Real Madrid could land him in January.
The Welsh wizard's stock has risen considerably this season after a number of scintillating displays, including a hat-trick against Inter Milan at the San Siro.

Agent Peppino Tirri says Juventus, AC Milan and Inter - as well as Real Madrid - are interested in the 21-year-old midfielder.
But, while he believes "there is a good chance" Bale will move to Italy one day, Tirri does not think a deal will be done in January.
The agent told ilsussidiario.net : "I confirm the interest of Juventus for Bale. The Bianconeri are trying to bring him to Italy but not in January, in June.
"AC Milan and Inter Milan too have shown interest in the Welsh player, partly because he would like to play in Italy in the near future. There is a good chance that it can happen.
"Also Real Madrid are seriously trying. (Jose) Mourinho has his eye on him and the Spanish club would be the only one who can take Bale in January."
Spurs boss Harry Redknapp has previously stated Bale is not for sale as the Londoners push for glory in both the Premier League and UEFA Champions League.

Frustrated Agger may quit Anfield

Updated Jan 4, 2011 7:01 PM ET
Defender Daniel Agger has told Liverpool that he will want a transfer if he is not guaranteed first-team football at Anfield.
The classy centre-back finally shook off a long-standing calf injury in order to return to the starting XI in the New Year's Day victory over Bolton.

TRANSFER SPECIAL

Keep up with all the biggest moves around the globe with our 2011 January transfer gallery.

But Agger, who has three years remaining on his contract, is not certain of a place in Roy Hodgson's plans amid competition from Martin Skrtel, Sotirios Kyrgiakos and, when he returns from a dislocated shoulder, vice-captain Jamie Carragher.
The Denmark international, who has been plagued by fitness problems throughout his career, will therefore consider his options if he finds that he does not have regular part to play.
Agger, 26, told Danish newspaper Jyllands Posten: "I still have three years left on my contract with Liverpool but it's not me who decides if I'm playing.
"If I'm not playing and I'm not injured I have no reason to be here. I now have a certain age and I feel I have the level to play at this club.
"So if I'm not going to play and I'm on the bench for a while, obviously I'm not interested in being here. Then I must see what options I have."
Hodgson recently dismissed suggestions that Agger would leave Liverpool in the January transfer window after links to Steve McClaren's Wolfsburg.
