Ukata waikatisha tamaa AFC

Real survive Getafe threat to go within two points of Barca

Madrid. Kaka made his comeback from an eight-month injury absence as Real Madrid went back to within two points of Primera Division leaders Barcelona with a 3-2 derby win at Getafe.

The Brazil superstar, who cost Madrid £56million when they signed him from AC Milan, entered the field as a 75th-minute substitute.

A Cristiano Ronaldo penalty and a goal from Mesut Ozil but Madrid 2-0 up, before Daniel Parejo netted for the home side. Ronaldo's second made it three for Jose Mourinho`s men, with Alvaro Arbeloa's late dismissal putting Madrid under pressure, with Juan Albin's 84th-minute goal
Elsewhere, Villarreal made light of the absence of key players by strolling to a comfortable 2-0 win at home to struggling Almeria.

The so-called Yellow Submarine had been rocked by recent injuries to striker Nilmar and holding midfielder Marcos Senna, while centre-backs Carlos Marchena and Mateo Musacchio also missed this clash. Nevertheless, Juan Carlos Garrido's men continued their fine start to the season and settled this match with a goal in each half from Jose Manuel Catala and Borja Valero.

Atletico Madrid missed the chance to climb into the top five after being held to a disappointing goalless draw at home by Racing Santander.
With Espanyol losing to Valencia last night, the Rojiblancos would have moved above the Barcelona-based outfit with a victory over a Racing side that picked up just four points from a possible 24 away from home prior to tonight`s game.

However, without the forward firepower of Diego Forlan (injured), Jose Antonio Reyes (suspended) and Simao Sabrosa (transferred), Atletico were unable to break down the Racing defence as Quique Sanchez Flores' men missed the chance to record a hat-trick of league wins for the first time in almost a year.
It could have been even worse for last season's UEFA Europa League winners, though, as Racing almost snatched a late winner through Markus Rosenberg, with the hosts being indebted to goalkeeper David De Gea on that occasion.

Mallorca started 2011 in style by emphatically ending their four-match losing streak with a 3-0 win at home to Hercules. The islanders lost all of their games in December, going down to Getafe, Racing Santander and Villarreal in the league before a 4-3 defeat at Almeria in the Copa del Rey before Christmas.
But Michael Laudrup's side were back to their promising early-season form as they swept aside a disappointing Hercules. Emilo N'Sue gave them the lead, Victor Casadesus made it two and then Michael Pereira wrapped things up.

Braulio's last-minute goal finally earned Real Zaragoza a deserved victory at Estadio La Romareda. Florent Sinama-Pongolle's early opener had been cancelled out by Xabi Prieto shortly after the half-hour.(AFP)

Taifa Stars stare at 200m/- prize
01_11_kxjjqf.jpg
Taifa Stars head coach Jan Poulsen

From AMIR MHANDO, Cairo, 4th January 2011 @ 12:00, Total Comments: 0, Hits: 196

WINNER of the maiden Nile Basin countries football tournament that opens here today will get 200m/- from the organizer - the government of Egypt.

The 12-day event will bring together seven teams from hosts Egypt, Sudan, Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, while Rwanda and Ethiopia are the only Basin countries that apologized for non-participation.

However, there will be no opening ceremony, the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) announced yesterday.

"We have decided to cancel the opening ceremony, following the recent church attack by terrorists in Alexandria," EFA president Samir Zaher announced in a press conference yesterday.

"The tournament official slogan will be (National Unity, No to Terrorism)," said Zaher. "We decided to cancel the opening ceremony as all the Egyptians are very sad following the terrorist attack," added Zaher who asked the conference attendees to hold a minute of silence for those who passed away in the attack.

The EFA have also decided that the Egyptian players will wear black arm bands in honour of the victims and that the supporters will hold a minute of silence before the Pharaohs opening game against Tanzania's Taifa Stars.

Zaher said the winner will get 176,000 US dollars (over 200m/-). He said they have decided to give out hefty prize so as to create much excitement and competitiveness in the inaugural tournament.

He said the second placed will pocket 125,500 US dollars (about 170m/-), while the third placed will be entitled to 100,000 US dollars (over 150m/-).

He also said the organiser have set aside prizes for top scorer, best goalkeeper and the tournament's best player of this newly-introduced competition that will climax on January 17.

It will be a test of character for Stars coach Dane Jan Poulsen, who took over from Brazilian Marcio Maximo in August, last year. Poulsen will lead the Stars at the backdrop of his recent success with the Mainland side ‘Kilimanjaro Stars' that won the Cecafa Challenge Cup that eluded the country for the past 16 years.

But it is definitely not going to be easy for him facing African champions at their home soil. Egypt thrashed Stars 5-1 in their last friendly outing in Cairo. And Egypt coach Hassan Shehata said at least players who were in the team that won the African Cup of Nations last year in Angola, have been included in the squad for the Nile Basin tournament.

Shehata said he knows Taifa Stars very well and that he was aware that the Mainland side won the regional tournament. He warned other teams to ignore Stars at their own peril. "They are a good team with talented players.

I believe they (Taifa Stars) are well prepared for this tournament. I remember the two diminutive deadly players. They were really good and gave us some torrid evening when we last met two years ago," he told journalists yesterday.

Stars will bank their hopes on the experience of first choice goalie Juma Kaseja, who could bring back the odd memories in Cairo, when he stopped Egyptian giant side Zamalek from winning in the Africa Champions League match against Simba way back in 2003.

Bad for him though, he also conceded 5 goals against Haras El Hodoud in Cairo last year, during the Confederation Cup tie with Simba. He will be playing under the defensive shield of Aggrey Morris, Nadir Haroub, skipper Shadrack Nsajigwa and Stephano Mwasika.

In attacking Poulsen is likely to deploy veteran pair of Athumani Machupa and Said Maulid, while Mrisho Ngasa, who probably is the one that Shehata was referring to will also be expected to torment the hosts.

Stars Assistant coach Sylvester Marsh insisted yesterday that his team was ready for the challenge, saying they will stun the hosts.

ZIFF plots more host towns for mini-festival
01_11_h1gh31.jpg
THE ZIFF Chief Excutive Officer Martin Mhando.

From DAILY NEWS Reporter in Zanzibar, 4th January 2011 @ 12:00, Total Comments: 0, Hits: 39

THE Zanzibar International Film Festival is contemplating moving its mini-festival to Dar es Salaam and Bagamoyo to further stimulate the industry in the country.

The ZIFF Chief Executive Officer Martin Mhando said this when addressing journalists regarding the future of the mini-ZIFF, which has been introduced this year.

Two films out of the eight which participated in the just concluded mini-ZIFF in Zanzibar secured ticket to take part in the continental competition of the Panafrican Film and Television Festival of Ouagadougou (FESPACO) next month.

He noted that ZIFF was not only meant for Zanzibar but for all dhow countries and the organisers can decide to hold it any where in the country, where it would be a catalyst for developing the film industry.

"We have even already got invitations from places such as Mwanza to run the mini- ZIFF in partnership with us. This mini-ZIFF aims at stepping up leverage of Bongo movies at global markets, so any place in the country can be chosen to host it," he said.

He added: "The ZIFF Board has already approved that we hold this festival anywhere in the country in the form of mini-festival. Aside from suggesting Dar es Salaam and Bagamoyo as possible hosts for future mini-ZIFF, he said the premier version had been successful.

He expressed impression with the high attendance but noted that it was important for Bongo movies to be shown on big screens. He said external viewers of Bongo movies had already complained of the lack of English sub-titles.

"Apart from a few challenges which judges highlighted in this mini-competition, the local films have the capacity to go further," said Mhando.

Explaining the reasons as to why two companies of Steps Entertainment and Pilipili made a significant presence at the just concluded festival, he noted there were the current biggest producers of Tanzania's movies and it was easier to locate them.

He asked the public at large to engage more in sponsoring the festival which is also recognized by Hollywood as a platform that also shows films with smaller budgets in the world.

We have the belief, says Wenger Tuesday, 04 January 2011 22:04

London. Arsene Wenger believes his Arsenal side can prove once and for all they are up for the fight in the English Premier League title race by beating new pretenders Manchester City.

Wenger said after the victory over an out-of-form Chelsea over Christmas that his side have toughened up and are in the running to end their five-season wait for a trophy. And a win over second-placed City will not only lift Arsenal above Roberto Mancini's men in the Premier League table, but, according to Wenger, show that his claims have substance.

Wenger, who had a mixed festive period with wins over Birmingham and Chelsea and a draw at Wigan, said: "After the Chelsea game the team was on a high because we got that burden out of the way. But after we were quickly down again because we dropped two points against Wigan. But I am pleased we were quickly back up again.

"This team could see the positive effect of the Chelsea win. It was there for all to see on Saturday (against Birmingham). You can see we have the belief in our game now. That is what will make the title race really interesting," the Frenchman added. "We started the season with more personality and authority. We panic less."
Wenger added that he has not seen a title race like it, with the Gunners, Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea and Tottenham all in the running midway through the season.

"I cannot remember a title race with five teams in it. Last week (United manager) Alex Ferguson said there were three, now there are five. "I said there could be five from the start."

McClaren backs Dzeko move to Machester City d Tuesday, 04 January 2011 22:02

London. Steve McClaren believes Edin Dzeko will be a 'good buy' for Manchester City and expects the striker to form a potent partnership with Carlos Tevez.

City are closing in on a deal to sign Dzeko from Wolfsburg and the Bosnian hit-man is expected to cost in the region of £27million. Dzeko has been one of the most prolific strikers in Europe in recent seasons and has been a target for many of the continent's leading clubs.

Premier League title chasers City appear to have won the race for the 24-year-old and Wolfsburg coach McClaren is confident Dzeko will be a hit in England.
"He will be ideal for City, especially alongside Carlos Tevez," said the former England boss in the Daily Mirror. "That will be a very potent partnership, very strong.
"I wish him well and hope he fulfils his dream and potential there.

"He is a very, very good player and that is reflected in the price.
"He is a big lad, strong and quick too. He also has good technique.

"But most importantly he is a goalscorer who gets them with his left foot, his right foot, his head. That is what City are getting. He is a good buy for them."

McClaren feels Dzeko will adapt to playing in the Premier League, but did suggest the forward will need to up his work-rate. He added: "He is a good boy, but he needs to work harder now he is in the Premier League than he does at present. But he will adjust, no problem." (AFP)

Ocean View force Yanga to 1-1 draw

Zanzibar. Mainland giants Young Africans launched their Mapinduzi Cup campaign on a low note as they were forced to a 1-1 draw by Zanzibar Ocean View in a thrilling match at Amaan Stadium here on Sunday.

Yanga's Zambian striker Davies Mwape ended his goal-drought after 18 minutes when he netted the match-opener for his team, the first goal for him since joining the former Mainland champions last year.

The goal was initiated by Idd Mbaga, who beat two defenders on the right flank before placing the ball to unmarked Mwape, who in turn curled it home, leaving the hosts' goalkeeper flat footed.

Celebrations that greeted the goal had hardly died down when Amour Suleiman scored an equaliser for Ocean View in the 22nd minute through a free kick, which gave Yanga's Ghanaian goalkeeper Yew Berko no chance.
Only minutes later, referee Makame Haji Mpoma was forced to halt the match for some 15 minutes following a power black-out.
The hosts were reduced to 10 players just after the hour mark when Suleiman, scorer of the goal that cancelled Yang's lead, was given marching orders by referee Mpoma for an ugly tackle on a Yanga defender.
Looking unperturbed, Ocean View enjoyed the lion's share of possession in the last 20 minutes, and went close to scoring severally, but to no avail.

Meanwhile, the national soccer team, Taifa Stars, left for Cairo, Egypt yesterday for the inaugural Nile Basin championship kicking off tomorrow.

Taifa Stars, smarting after a 1-0 home defeat to Morocco in their African Nations Cup qualifier on October 9, last year, have to fare impressively in Egypt if they are to restore the enthusiastic support they enjoyed during the Ghana 2008 qualifiers.
"We know that Tanzanians' hopes for psychological reprieve rest on our shoulders, we will not afford to let them down," striker Said Maulid said yesterday, a few moments before the team's departure.

Maulid, one the professionals recalled recently to beef up Stars striking force, said he and his colleagues were in high spirits, looking forward to making a mark in the seven-team tournament.

Jan Poulsen's team launch their campaign with a tricky date as they face hosts Egypt tomorrow.
"We know that Tanzanians find solace in the fact that most of the players making up the team were part of Mainland's Kilimanjaro Stars, who recently clinched the Cecafa Tusker Senior Challenmge Cup in Dar es Salaam," he said.

Dar es Salaam. After days of negotiations, Young Africans and national soccer team midfielder Abdi Kassim has finally signed a two-year contract with a Vietnamese club, Dong Long Tam Ham. In an interview with The Citizen yesterday, Kassim said he was very happy to see his long cherished passion to play professional soccer overseas materialise.

"It's like a dream come true. Playing professional soccer abroad is a passion I have cherished for many years, I expect to be my country's good ambassador in Vietnam," he said.

This takes the number of Tanzanian players plying their trade at Dong Long Tam Tam to two. Former Simba's striker Danny Mrwanda signed for the team about two seasons ago.

Kassim said he was optimistic his presence at the Vietnam team would be immediately noticed.
"I am looking forward to guiding my new team to success," the attacking midfielder said confidently.
"I expect to join my new team very soon. I thank God and those who helped me be where I am now," he said. But he fell short of giving more details on his contract.

He also thanked Yanga leaders for the support they accorded him throughout his stay at the Jangwani Street club.
Yanga secretary general Lawrence Mwalusako confirmed yesterday that the Vietnam club has paid them about Sh59.2 million ($40,000) for Kassim, Sh40.8million short of the initial price tag.

He disclosed that the process of sealing the deal was done through electronics system as required by the world soccer body, Fifa.

Poor Simba show angers Phiri

SIMBA SC coach Patrick Phiri

From ISSA YUSSUF in Zanzibar, 4th January 2011 @ 12:00, Total Comments: 0, Hits: 232

SIMBA SC coach Patrick Phiri poured scorn on his strikers, saying they played below par after the Mainland Champions were held to 1-1 draw by Pemba's Jamhuri FC in their opening match of Mapinduzi Cup.

Simba looked to be heading for victory after Hilary Echesa's 44th minute goal gave them the advantage at Amani Stadium last Monday night. Wasteful Simba should have the strength and depth to beat Jamhuri even with a bigger margin in the first half.

Jamhuri would have capitulated particularly after Simba scored just before the break - and if anything they looked a more compact unit after the restart. Simba could never quite shake them off and the Pemba side thoroughly deserved the point that lifted their morale ahead of the next encounter.

Ali Othman Mmanga pulled level in the 55th minute. The scorer made a solo effort, driving past defenders before beating goalie Ally Mustapha. Phiri reckoned Simba were a better side but wasteful.

He said it was a difficult game with a high level of commitment from Jamhuri players. "They caught us a bit in the second half. We didn't do enough after they equalised and credit should go to Jamhuri players because they didn't give up after we scored first.

"My strikers were a bit afraid to play football. We created many scoring chances but they went begging. I think our opponents were much more clinical," said Phiri.

Asked whether this level of performance would suffice in the remaining Mapinduzi Cup matches, Mainland Premier League title defence and international tournaments coming up, Phiri added: "We have to improve to play against much better teams."

"Tough matches are ahead of us...it is important that we use this tournament to lift our performance," said Phiri. However, the Zambian tactician attributed their relatively poor performance in the first match to absence of his key five players, who are with the national team ‘Taifa Stars' in Egypt, bumpy pitch and freshness of some players in the Mapinduzi Cup tournament.

Despite the poor show, Phiri vowed he was strong enough to lead Simba out of their slouch. Jamhuri FC coach Ameir Chuwa told reporters after the match which attracted huge crowd, "I am happy with this result against a big team. We can perform even better in future, but very unfortunate the referees are not fair.

In most cases, the referees favour big team. Referees fairness will help the development of soccer in the country," he said. Prior to the Simba versus Jamhuri match, KMKM also held Mtibwa Sugar team to 1-1 draw at the game witnessed by handful supporters.

Ventaraus Kamanya scored for KMKM at 34th minute, while Mtibwa equalized at 71st minute through Obadia Mungusa, who connected home Juma Mpakale's cross.

Juma Sheha, KMKM team coach said after the match that inexperience of some players in the tournament hampered their performance, while Tom Olaba, Mtibwa's coach said: "The game was good, but my players panicked. However, we are prepared to defend the title."

Stars target ‘Pharaohs' revenge

From AMIR MHANDO in Cairo, 3rd January 2011 @ 12:00, Total Comments: 0, Hits: 179

THE national soccer team ‘Taifa Stars' manager expects nothing but a revenge when his team face hosts Egypt in the opening match of the maiden Nile Basin countries football tournament that opens here on Wednesday.

Leopold ‘Tasso' Mukebezi said Stars are well prepared to challenge in the tournament, saying the target is to win all matches. "It was a pity that Stars lost heavily -- 5-1 in their last outing against the ‘Pharaohs' almost a year ago, but this time around we won't let that happen to us again," said Mukebezi.

Like Assistant Coach Sylvester Marsh, Mukebezi is confident that the Stars will be buoyed by drills that the players went through as well as the recent success of the Mainland side ‘Kilimanjaro Stars' in the Cecafa Challenge Cup to perform wonders in Egypt.

Stars first choice goalie Juma Kaseja also spoke of the players' determination to perform wonders in the tournament, saying the preparations they made will definitely help them to perform well in the inaugural championships.

The 12- day event will bring together seven teams from hosts Egypt, Sudan, Burundi Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, while Rwanda and Ethiopia are the only Basin countries that apologised for non-participation.

Already, the tournament has become the talk of the city ahead as local media reports seems to give much focus on the Democratic Republic of Congo and Sudan as the toughest opponents against their national side-‘Pharaohs.'

Taifa Stars, Burundi and Kenya are considered as light weight, as Uganda Cranes are slightly ranked above the other three East African nations. The match to pit Stars and Egypt will take place at Cairo Stadium. Stars arrived here on Monday ready for the tournament.

Stars will have to overcome Egypt, Burundi and Uganda cranes in Group A, to guarantee a chance of making the semi-finals of the all-expense paid tournament. Latest entrants DR Congo, Kenya and Sudan make up Group B.

Meanwhile, the president of Egyptian Council of Sports Hassan Saqr announced to the media on Monday that the Sports minister will meet on Tuesday with the ministries of sports of Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda and Sudan.

Saqr said the meeting with the four counterparts is part of the officials' visit to Egypt to attend the opening of the Nile Basin countries football tournament. He confirmed the depth of relations between Egypt and Nile Basin countries.

‘Huba', ‘This is it' cruise to Panafrican Film Festival

By DAILY NEWS Reporter, Zanzibar, 3rd January 2011 @ 11:00, Total Comments: 0, Hits: 72

TWO local films, ‘Huba' and ‘This is it' have clinched final spots to participate in the Panafrican Film and Television Festival of Ouagadougou (FESPACO) next month.

Announcing the results in the competition that saw eight films take part in the Mini Zanzibar International Film Festival (ZIFF) in Zanzibar, the three-panel of judges said the winning films had shown elements of genuine Tanzania traditions and realities to cruise to the continental festival.

The films which were shown at the Festival include Divorce, Briefcase, Best Wife, This is it, ‘nani', ‘Huba', Don't Cry and Black Sunday.

The panel which had three judges Farida Nyamachumbe and Juma Mohamed from the Department of Information Services in Zanzibar and Martin Warioba expressed their impression with the preparations for the mini festival, which has been done for the first time aimed at uplifting Bongo movies.

In the Huba film, the plot is hinged on two different sex people living with disability in one family. The female is deaf while the male, who is the uncle is dumb. It bodes along a story on how they were being ill treated and how love schemes in between the two.

In ‘This is it', it tells a story of a child who is a witch and her impact on the family. The panel also said the mini festival would give a global platform to Tanzania's films. "Creativity is important but a film with no sense of ownership in its display of local traditions is not a film," said Warioba when announcing the results.

He said many of Bongo movies which have parts one and two, were made only for home viewership were between 90 or 120 minutes. But the judges said that all the screened eight movies had one major technical problem especially in telling the story.

They attributed the glaring shortcoming to a lack of education among the producers on how to tell stories in long films. Even with the existing problems, they said, the level reached was important in enabling local film makers launch international careers.

Giving out the awards, the Chairman for ZIFF and head of Zanzibar Information Services Hassan Mitawi said the Festival was going on with selling Tanzania's culture through films.
