Tenga awafunda watendaji wapya TFF

Vauxhall are new England football team sponsors

Published 23:30 05/01/11 By Graham Hiscott

Car giant Vauxhall will be confirmed as the England football team's new big-money sponsor next week, the Mirror can reveal.
The multi-million deal, to be announced on Tuesday, will see the manufacturer replace the Nationwide Building Society which dumped the squad after its dismal World Cup performance.
The link-up with Vauxhall - sponsors of MirrorFootball's Football Spy transfer gossip section - will provide a much-needed boost to the FA which has been searching for a new sponsor every since.
Nationwide offered to extend its last four-year deal, worth around £25million, before the World Cup kicked-off.

But the FA turned it down after banking on bagging a better deal if Fabio Capello's men did well in South Africa.
The deal with Vauxhall will also come as a welcome relief for new FA chairman David Bernstein.
The former Manchester City chairman was the surprise choice to fill the void left by the forced resignation of Lord Triesman.

Rooney to miss Liverpool cup crunch

Published 23:00 05/01/11 By David Maddock

Sir Alex Ferguson is prepared to go to war with Wayne Rooney again... if it is necessary to protect the striker.
The Manchester United forward is desperate to face his old rivals Liverpool in the FA Cup on Sunday - and he is winning the race to be fit for the showdown. But Ferguson will not risk his star player in a competition that is third on the list of Old Trafford priorities, no matter what the motivation for Rooney.
Even though the player could by then have recovered from an ankle injury that kept him out of the midweek victory over Stoke, the United boss will not repeat the mistake of rushing the player back too quickly.
He did that last season when Rooney injured his ankle against Chelsea and was brought back almost immediately for a Champions League tie with Bayern Munich, only to aggravate the injury.

The pair have fallen out once already this season over the striker's fitness, with Rooney making his anger clear when Ferguson ordered him to rest an injury problem.
That history makes the matter delicate, but Ferguson will not risk the player on Sunday if there is even the merest hint of a chance that he could worsen the problem.
Even though, as an Everton fan, Rooney would love to face Liverpool, he will not go against his manager's wishes this time, after accepting that the immensely experienced Ferguson was right about the injury earlier in the season.
United will field a strong side, even though Fergie usually prefers to play his fringe players and kids in the competition.
The memory of losing to long-term rivals Leeds in last season's competition still smarts, and the last thing he wants is a repeat against Liverpool - the club his has always seen as United's natural enemy. And Ferguson explained that means he will not rotate quite so dramatically for the cup.
"It was a bad result last season against Leeds, especially considering the rivalry between the two clubs," he admitted. "In hindsight I could have picked a stronger team. I won't be making that mistake this time."
Rio Ferdinand and Edwin van der Saar are likely to return, and Michael Owen could also play against one of his old clubs, for whom he scored at Old Trafford in this competition in 1999.
"I don't forget Michael Owen's goal. It was a header and Gary Neville was caught napping at the back post. But we battered them after that," said Fergie. "It is an important trophy, so there is a strong desire to get our hands on it.
"We haven't won it since 2004, or been the final since we lost to Chelsea in 2007. So we definitely want to get back there. And we want to win it."

Jinamizi la wimbo kugoma laitesa TFF
Wednesday, 05 January 2011 20:31

Calvin Kiwia

Behrami's move to Italy is back on

Published 23:00 05/01/11 By John Cross

Fiorentina have made a £4million move for West Ham midfielder Valon Behrami.
Behrami's move to Fiorentina's Serie A rivals Roma stalled because the Italians' bankers told them to cut their wage bill.
That in turn has held up Steve Sidwell's move from Aston Villa to West Ham, but Fiorentina's intervention could now help speed up his arrival at Upton Park.

The scrap came just hours before the club's crucial showdown against title rivals Arsenal at the Emirates on Wednesday evening.
Toure has been quick to brush off the incident and does not believe the latest row to hit City will impact on the team's title prospects.
"It was a bust-up because of a hard tackle," Toure told The Sun.
"We both lost it but it was quickly calmed down. Other players and the manager came to separate us. It's already forgotten. In any case, with Adebayor it's not the first time and it won't be the last.
"At Arsenal we often had a similar set-to. We know each other well, maybe too well. In any case that proves we have energy to burn. It's not that negative."
It is not the first time spirit in the club's camp has been questioned after Mario Balotelli and Jerome Boateng also came to blows on the training ground.
And Adebayor also became embroiled in an on-field row with Vincent Kompany during the team's shock 2-1 Premier League defeat by Wolves.

Carlo: We must concentrate on top four finish and Cup

Published 23:22 05/01/11 By Martin Lipton

Carlo Ancelotti admitted Chelsea have to target the Champions League and FA Cup after slumping to their sixth Premier League defeat of the season.
Jose Bosingwa's fifth minute own goal gave Wolves their first top flight win over the Blues in 31 years to leave Chelsea with just 10 points from their last 11 games and nine points adrift of Manchester United in fifth.
And while Ancelotti refused to throw the towel in completely, he conceded: "We are not good enough at this moment.
"Now it is easy for us to think it's not a good season but we can still fight for a lot of things. Nothing is lost.

"Obviously it's difficult to come back in the Premier League. The gap is not so good but we have the FA Cup and the Champions League and we have to keep fighting for the title."
Ancelotti had dismissed the possibility of losing at Molineux but was forced to admit: "I made a mistake.
"I didn't see any problems in the squad but conceding right at the start was difficult for us.
"But I would be surprised if I was sacked and do not fear it. I hope that I can continue this job because I would like to stay here and I have a good relationship with the players and with the club."
Wolves boss Mick McCarthy, set to sign Aston Villa's Steve Sidwell after the collapse of his planned move to West Ham, was thrilled with his players after the win moved them out of the drop zone.
McCarthy said: "It was a fantastic effort and fantastic result. Chelsea were expected to win and should've won. It just doesn't happen like that.
"It's nice to be out of the bottom three but I want to be out of it on May 22. We might go up and down like a fiddler's elbow until then."

Hosts Rwanda prepare for African U17 test

By Prudent Nsengiyumva
BBC Sport, Kigali

The African U17 tournament doubles as qualifiers for this year's World Cup

Rwanda is gearing up to host the African Under-17 championship, which kicks off on Saturday.
The four teams that reach the semi-finals will qualify for the U17 World Cup in Mexico later this year.
Rwanda's local organising committee (LOC) says everything is ready because they hosted the U20 championship two years ago.
"It was like winning an award for Rwanda to host this competition", LOC head Emmanuel Bugingo told the BBC.
The hosts are taking part in the tournament for the first time but have high hopes of making it out of their group - which includes Burkina Faso, Senegal and Egypt.
The other group comprises current title holders The Gambia, plus Congo Brazzaville, Ivory Coast and Mali.
Rwanda's U17 coach, the Frenchman Richard Tardy, has been with the team for five months and took the side to Tunisia for a month-long pre-tournament camp.
"It's a long time we've been waiting for this moment and we're a little impatient to start", Tardy said.
"The [players] want to put in a good performance; they want to win their first game - my job is now to wait and not lose my nerve."
Rwanda start their campaign with a game against Burkina Faso on 8 January.

Everton 2-1 Tottenham Hotspur

Updated Jan 5, 2011 8:46 PM ET
Everton put Tottenham's title aspirations and ambitious plans to sign David Beckham in the shade with a 2-1 win at Goodison Park on Wednesday.
Seamus Coleman grabbed a 75th-minute winner at Goodison Park after the outstanding Rafael van der Vaart had cancelled out Louis Saha's superb early opener.
Both sides had numerous opportunities to win an absorbing contest but it was Everton, rediscovering the spark that has been missing for much of the season, who held on for a victory greeted with much jubilation.

The only consolation for Spurs was that they retained fourth place in the table thanks to yet another defeat for ailing champions Chelsea.
Fans' favourite Robbie Keane was thrown on 10 minutes from time on the day it was confirmed talks had begun over a possible £7million to Birmingham.
But the Republic of Ireland striker could not make a final telling contribution and his Spurs career could now be over.
Spurs were caught cold after just three minutes as Saha finally ended his 11-month league goal drought with a fine strike from 25 yards.
William Gallas backed off his fellow Frenchman outside the area and the striker took full advantage to unleash a ferocious low shot which beat Heurelho Gomes from distance.
The visitors were stung into action and went close as Peter Crouch headed on for Van der Vaart and the Dutchman attempted a left-foot lob from 30 yards which curled narrowly wide.
Everton felt they should have had a penalty after an apparent push by Alan Hutton on Steven Pienaar, but referee Lee Probert saw nothing untoward.
Hutton then compounded Everton's frustration by swinging in the cross from the right which led to Spurs' equaliser after 11 minutes.
Crouch pounced on a Heitinga slip to head the high ball back across goal and Van der Vaart was the first to react, meeting it with a powerful header Tim Howard could not keep out.
Jermaine Beckford had an opportunity for Everton when he turned Gallas inside the box after a neat pass from Saha, but shot well over.
Another shooting chance opened up for Coleman after a slick Everton move but Jermaine Jenas slid in to make a vital block.
Spurs responded as Luka Modric got a sight of goal but Sylvain Distin got in the way.

Crouch thought he had put Spurs ahead on the stroke of half-time when he sidefooted home from a Gareth Bale pass, but the flag was raised for offside.
Van der Vaart then fired narrowly over from a free-kick as Spurs ended the first half in the ascendancy.
Everton boss David Moyes appeared to speak to Probert as the official left the pitch at half-time, possibly about his side's failed penalty appeal, before heading down the tunnel.
But his players remained fully fired up and had the chance to start the second half much as they did the first as Saha released Coleman down the right.
The Irishman raced into the box but ignored Beckford in the middle and shot straight at Gomes.
Spurs suffered a blow as Bale, who had been brought down by Neville while on the charge moments earlier, appeared to limp off after being fouled again just before the hour.
Van der Vaart almost caught Everton out again when he beat Distin on the edge of the box but Howard palmed away his dipping shot.
Everton went straight back onto the attack and Saha met a Coleman cross with a powerful first-time volley but Hutton scrambled back to deflect the goalbound effort wide.
Saha was gifted another chance when a Gallas interception rolled into his path, but Gomes was equal to his shot.
Howard was then called into action twice in quick succession at the other end, first producing a brilliant point-blank save to deny Van der Vaart from six yards after a weaving run by Modric.
Crouch then found space to shoot from distance but Howard tipped the ball over.
Everton threw themselves forward again as Beckford sent Saha clear, and this time it proved decisive.
Saha cut inside and although Gomes parried his long-range piledriver, Coleman followed up to put home the rebound with a diving header.
Ayegbeni Yakubu should have added a third late on when clean through, but dwelt too long on the ball

U20 draw pits Ghana against Nigeria at Libya 2011

The next generation of Ghana players want to emulate their 2009 double-winning colleagues

Defending champions Ghana have been paired with Nigeria, Cameroon and The Gambia in Group B of the upcoming African U20 championship in March.
Hosts Libya are in Group A, along with Mali, Egypt and Lesotho.
The tournament takes place from 18 March to 1 April and the four semi-finalists will qualify for the U20 World Cup later in 2011.
Ghana are also defending World champions and the Black Satellites are determined to hold on to both crowns.
"It's very important for us," coach Orlando Wellington told the BBC before the draw was made.
"It's a big challenge for me and the players - we have to work very hard to go to the World Cup. It's not easy but financially and physically we are prepared."
Wellington insisted that his crop of youngsters have even more potential than their double-winning predecessors.
"When you talk about technique this team is far ahead of the past champions," he told the BBC's African sports programme Fast Track.
"These people are tactically and technically [more] sound than the other team. The others play more aggressively but this team can play very good football."
The four teams in each group will meet in a round robin format, with group winners and runners-up progressing to the semi-finals - and a place at the World Cup in Colombia in July.

Tunisia appoint Faouzi Benzarti as national team coach

Faouzi Benzarti will take charge of Tunisia for the second time

Tunisia have appointed Faouzi Benzarti as national team coach for the third time.
He took the Carthage Eagles to the Africa Cup of Nations in Angola in 2010 and was previously in charge in 1994.
Previous boss Bertrand Marchand left last month, after a double defeat by Botswana in 2012 Nations Cup qualifying.
Benzarti's hopes of staying in the post beyond 2011 rest upon qualifying for next year's Nations Cup finals.
Tunisia currently lie second in Group K of qualifying for Equatorial Guinea and Gabon, one point ahead of Malawi.
Two teams will progress from this group because it comprises five countries.
Between his spells with the national team, Benzarti led Tunisian club side Esperance to the African Champions League final, where they were beaten by DR Congo's TP Mazembe.
He left Esperance shortly afterwards after falling out with the club's chairman.
He will be assisted by compatriots Farid Ben Belgacem, who coaches League 1 side El-Gouafel Gafsa, and Sami Trabelsi, a former Club Sfaxien player who worked as an assistant to Marchand.
The three will sign what the Tunisian federation has called a 'contract of objectives', which is effectively based upon a successful qualification for Equatorial Guinea and Gabon 2012.
In his first press conference on Tuesday, Benzarti said his objective "is very tough" and will need Tunisia to win their next three qualifiers.

Samba insists he wants to leave Blackburn Rovers

Samba is ambitious to 'go higher' and feels his future lies elsewhere

Blackburn defender Christopher Samba has reiterated his desire to leave Ewood Park.
Samba was quoted last month as saying he was ready to hand in a transfer request, but new manager Steve Kean said last week he expected him to stay.
"This is my fifth season here. I've had ups and downs but today I don't want to waste any more time," said Samba.
"I want to go higher and I wonder if Blackburn can take me there. I'll take time to think."
The Congolese international told French newspaper L'Equipe he does not want to be part of the club under new owners Venky's.
One of the first things the India-based poultry firm did on taking over was sack Sam Allardyce and give his job to first-team coach Kean.
Since then the club's owners have hit the headlines again by going public with ambitious bids to sign AC Milan forward Ronaldinho and take former England captain David Beckham on loan from the Los Angeles Galaxy.
Samba, who is set to return from a three-game absence through injury against Liverpool on Wednesday, has expressed his dismay at Venky's handling of matters at the club and believes it is now time to leave.
"New owners have arrived, they have fired the coach when he saved us from relegation two years ago," he said.
"The least they could have done is come to us and explain their project. They haven't done that, it's a lack of respect. I don't want to be part of it."
He also expressed his suspicion that Kean would be given the transfer funds to make Blackburn the top-five club which the owners believe is possible.
"He [Kean] told me he had resources to build a good team. We'll see," Samba added.
After last week's 3-1 victory at West Bromwich, his first win as Rovers boss, Kean said Samba had not officially demanded a move.
However, the Scot had previously stripped Samba of the Blackburn captaincy because he claimed he was looking to leave the club.
