Torres akana kuitema Liverpool

LONDON, England

Ancelotti ahadharisha wachezaji Chelsea

LONDON, England

Dzeko relishing City challenge

New Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko is looking forward to joining the club's "project" after being unveiled this afternoon.
The Bosnian, who signed from Wolfsburg for £27million last weekend, admitted it had been hard to leave Germany but he was lured by joining a side chasing the Barclays Premier League title.
He said: "I'm very pleased. I'm here at a big club like Manchester City with big ambition.
"I saw something else in Man City. It's a big club and I'm an ambitious player and I think we can have a lot of success together.

"It's a project. I need to say it's a very good team with a very good coach. It was three-and-a-half beautiful years with Wolfsburg and we had a lot of success, winning the league for the first time in our history.
"I was very happy there but I wanted to change, try something new and better and that's why I'm here."
Dzeko also made reference to the club's rivalry with Manchester United, adding: "I hear a lot about the fans and that most of the people from Manchester are Manchester City fans.
"I don't know too much about the rivalry but I hear the derby is something special."
City manager Roberto Mancini hailed the 24-year-old as the "perfect" signing.
"I am very happy the club bought Dzeko," said the Italian. "I think he'll be a very important player for the future of this club.
"We wanted him in the summer because we knew he was the perfect player for us. He is different from the other players we have. Now we have a good mix. I hope he can score a lot of goals like in Germany.
"I think we spoke with him six months ago for the first time," he said. "We wanted to know if there was a chance to buy him but we do this now in January.
"It's important because now we are in a good position in the league. With one player like him we can improve in the Barclays Premier League and the Europa League. We have more chances in this moment."
Dzeko scored 10 goals in the first 17 games of the Bundesliga season and Mancini has no doubt Dzeko will continue his goalscoring form in England.
Mancini added: "He has quality, he has a good attitude, a good mentality... he's a strong player and he has experience but he is young. These are all things that are very important for the club.
"If one striker scores in Germany or Italy I think they score in England. The Barclays Premier League is difficult but I'm sure it will continue.
"For me he is one of the best strikers in Europe. With the other strikers we have we can have one of the best attacks in Europe."
One player who looks to be on his way out of Eastlands is full-back Wayne Bridge, who is close to joining West Ham on loan for the rest of the season.
Mancini confirmed: "Bridge I think today is in London for a medical."

Napoli have declared striker Edinson Cavani is not for sale for even £40m.
The Uruguay striker scored his second hat-trick of the season against Juventus to take his tally to 20 - and attract the interest of several Premier League clubs.
But Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis, whose side have climbed to second place in Serie A, said: "I wouldn't even sell him for €50m. I would say 'no' if Manchester City wanted him."
The Serie A club have the striker on loan for Palermo until the end of the season with a fixed option to buy for £14m.

Frank Lampard has revealed he will never fully recover from the injury that destroyed the first half of his season.
England midfielder Lampard spent almost four months sidelined by a hernia and groin problem that was initially expected to rule him out only for a few weeks.
The injury was so severe, the 32-year-old admits he will have to nurse it for the rest of his career.

With club captain John Terry managing a thigh problem and full-back Ashley Cole having a chronic ankle complaint, it is another issue for Chelsea's medical staff to monitor.
Lampard said: "I've got to try to keep it strong because I've got a weakness there.
"My tendon came off the bone and it doesn't go back, you just have to stay very strong in that area.
"I've spoken to players who've had it and they know the frustrations and the aftermath and what you have to do.
"It's no problem - you just have to do an extra two or three sessions a week in the gym to keep it strong.
"It was a bad injury and I still feel it occasionally.
"There are no sharp pains or anything, but the more games I play, the sharper I'll be, and I'm determined to have a good second half to the season because I basically missed the first half."
Lampard returned to action two weeks ago but has so far been unable to help Chelsea arrest their alarming slide down the Barclays Premier League.
The champions have blown a five-point lead to lie nine behind unbeaten Manchester United having played a game more after their worst run in the league for almost 15 years.
Lampard admits the title may be beyond Carlo Ancelotti's fifth-placed side but has refused to concede it entirely.
The midfielder, who helped lift some of the gloom at Stamford Bridge on Sunday with a double in the Blues' 7-0 FA Cup thrashing of Ipswich, said: "There's a bit of a gap. We can't afford to look around too much.
"We just need to win game by game. That's the position we're in now.
"We were up there early in the season, playing some great stuff, but now we're not."
Ancelotti hopes the arrival of fresh blood will help the Blues kick-start their season.
Lampard agrees, saying: "If we add some new players in January, fantastic, and hopefully we can get back to where we know we can be."

Arsenal will be without centre-back Sebastien Squillaci (hamstring) and right-back Bacary Sagna, who is serving a three-match ban, for tomorrow night's Carling Cup semi-final first leg at Ipswich.
Wojciech Szczesny will continue in goal, while centre-half Laurent Koscielny is expected to return having been rested for the FA Cup third-round draw against Leeds, as could striker Robin van Persie and England midfielder Jack Wilshere.
Aaron Ramsey is in contention to start, and reserve-team captain Ignasi Miquel should again be in the squad as defensive cover.
Midfielder Abou Diaby (calf), goalkeeper Manuel Almunia (ankle) and centre-back Thomas Vermaelen (Achilles) remain out.

Guinea's Bobo Balde quits Valenciennes

Guinea's Bobo Balde has joined French side Arles-Avignon

Guinea defender Bobo Balde has left French top-flight side Valenciennes after only one year at the club.
The 35-year-old ended his contract with the Ligue 1 club on Tuesday and signed for rivals Arles-Avignon.
Arles-Avignon are currently at the bottom of the table of the French top-flight and he has been signed to help them beat the drop.
"VAFC has agreed with Dianbobo Balde to cancel the player's contract," Valenciennes said in a statement.
"The player wished to get closer to his region of origin and is to join Arles-Avignon."
The Guinea international played for Scottish side Celtic for eight years before joining Valenciennes in 2009.
He had spells with French sides Marseille, Mulhouse, Cannes and Toulouse before joining Celtic in 2001.
He won four Scottish titles and played in the 2003 Uefa Cup final before leaving Celtic Park.

Vidic reminds rivals: This is United's time of year

Nemanja Vidic believes it bodes well for Manchester United that they have managed to hit top spot in the Barclays Premier League without finding their peak form on a consistent basis this season.
There have been highlights for the Red Devils - chiefly the seven-goal mauling of Blackburn in November, a thrilling win over Liverpool and a disciplined display against Arsenal.
But most results this term have been ground out, with valuable points gained at Sunderland and Aston Villa, plus a scrambling success at West Brom on New Year's Day compensating for late disappointments at Fulham, Everton and Birmingham.
However, as they approach Sunday's eagerly-awaited trip to Tottenham, United remain unbeaten, knowing they will have to lose twice for nearest challengers Manchester City and Arsenal to muscle their way back into contention.

Little wonder there is a growing feeling at Old Trafford that this could be the season when Sir Alex Ferguson's side register that record 19th league title.
"We definitely have a positive feeling," skipper Vidic told Inside United.
"We know that up until the win over Blackburn we hadn't performed as well as we can.
"But from my experience, this sort of time is when we usually come into good form.
"We all want to win the trophy - last season was very disappointing.
"We just need to keep pushing hard and playing well. If we do that, we have a good chance of regaining it."
The strength Ferguson has at his disposal means that United were able to book an FA Cup fourth-round trip to Southampton at the weekend despite resting Vidic and being without the injured Wayne Rooney and Edwin van der Sar.
In addition, Paul Scholes and John O'Shea have been sidelined for an extended period, while hopes of any kind of comeback for Owen Hargreaves would appear to be fading, given Ferguson can offer no timescale for the England star, who will not enjoy his 30th birthday celebrations later this month.
Not that Vidic is willing to take anything for granted.
There may still be doubt over whether the Serbian will be facing United old-boy David Beckham at White Hart Lane this weekend, but he accepts it will be a tough challenge against one of the most improved sides in what he insists is a tougher league than ever before.
"The quality has improved," he said.
"We saw last season how competitive the league is and it's been even more so this year.
"Sides such as Tottenham and Manchester City have raised their games, whilst other teams understand they have to improve if they want to stay in the league because it is so competitive. They have done that.
"It is a physically strong league and players have raised their game in that way too."

Harry Redknapp has not given up hope of signing David Beckham on loan, but says any attempt to sign Everton's Phil Neville would be difficult.
Former Manchester United star Beckham wants to secure a European loan move away from parent club LA Galaxy in order to maintain full fitness in the MLS close-season and ensure he remains in the thoughts of England manager Fabio Capello.

TRANSFER SPECIAL

Keep up with all the biggest moves around the globe with our 2011 January transfer gallery.

The 115-time international spent Monday at Spurs' training ground as he was assessed by the club's medical team in an attempt to prove he is 100 per cent fit after sustaining the Achilles injury last March which ruled him out of the 2010 World Cup.
Reports have suggested Tottenham have doubts about paying speculated wages of £80,000 a week for a player who is not guaranteed to play, while there are also issues surrounding the release from Galaxy and the payment of insurance.
Redknapp is eager to be able to select Beckham, but he confesses that a deal is proving difficult, as he told Sky Sports News: "It is great to have him here.
"Everybody (the Tottenham staff) has worked hard to get him here and we were hoping that he could come and play, obviously.
"They all grafted away and tried to get a deal done where he could play for us, but it was just a bit complicated.
"But, you never know, see how it goes."
Asked if the deal is still a possibility, Redknapp said: "I don't know, they (chairman Daniel Levy) work on that side of it. I've got the easy part, I just identify people.
"I said, 'I'd like it if we could get David. I think he would be good for us'. And then it is up to them to try and do the hard bit and pull the deals off.
"He is a fit lad and looks like he's in a great condition and looks after himself. He is a model professional.
"That wouldn't be a problem, but whether it is possible to do it or not, we're not sure."
Newspaper reports on Tuesday morning have also linked Redknapp with Beckham's former United team-mate, Neville.
The Spurs boss has admitted his admiration for the versatile 33-year-old, but does not think Everton counterpart David Moyes would want to lose his skipper.
Redknapp said of Neville: "I think he is a fantastic professional, a real leader and a great player. But I'm sure David Moyes knows just how important he is for his team.
"We played them twice recently and he is a real leader for them. David wouldn't want to lose him, I'm sure, so it would be a difficult one."

Gibson hails group mentality

Darron Gibson is sure Manchester United's bid for glory will never be derailed by disgruntled players venting their frustrations in public.
Although Manchester City have made rapid strides under Roberto Mancini this term, and at the very least look like cementing a place in next season's Champions League, their unity has not been helped by a series of negative comments from men not happy with their lot.
Micah Richards was the latest to confirm he would seek a move if he found himself left out of the City side too often, whilst Emmanuel Adebayor has not been scared to make very similar claims.

Yet this does not happen at United, even though Sir Alex Ferguson's rotation policy has been in operation far longer.
Gibson was one of those who suffered on Sunday, when he remained on the bench for Sunday's FA Cup tie with Liverpool.
But the Republic of Ireland international feels it is part of being at a club where the challenge is to win trophies, rather than merely looking after number one.
"The spirit is so good within the squad and everyone is so tight together, no-one wants to upset it," said Gibson.
"This is a great club and we have a great manager, who knows what he is doing and how to keep players happy.
"We have a good group at the minute. Hopefully it will stay like that for a long time."
At 23, Gibson still has time on his side.
Ferguson showed the faith he has in the midfielder's skills by surprisingly selecting him to start last season's Champions League quarter-final decider with Bayern Munich.
Although United went out, Gibson was part of arguably their best performance on the season, lashing home the third-minute opener that started a devastating first half for Ferguson's men.
Injuries have restricted the Derry-born star's contribution this term.
His appearance against Stoke last week was only his eighth of the season.
However, having been involved in all four Premier League fixtures over the Christmas period, Gibson has given himself something to build on.
"Sir Alex Ferguson is probably the greatest manager ever, so it does give you confidence when he talks to you and tells you that you can win him a game," he said.
"He showed a lot of faith to put me in against Bayern Munich.
"But when you are a younger player, you have to wait for your chance. When it comes along you have to take it.
"There is a little extra pressure because you have to prove you can do as well, if not better, than the players who are in every week.
"Luckily for me this season, when I came back from injuries, there were a few others, who were out as well.
"I got my chance, have kicked on from there and played a few games since."

Fabregas wary of 'desperate' Ipswich

Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas has warned his side cannot afford to underestimate "dangerous" npower Championship strugglers Ipswich in Wednesday night's Carling Cup semi-final first leg at Portman Road.
Even though Arsene Wenger will again rotate his squad, the Gunners are odds-on favourites to easily dispose of the Tractor Boys - who yesterday appointed Paul Jewell as successor to Roy Keane - and reach Wembley next month as they look to secure a first piece of silverware in six seasons.
However, Fabregas, who came off the bench on Saturday to net a last-minute penalty against Leeds which kept Arsenal in the FA Cup, is in no doubt the Suffolk club will be "motivated" to cause a major upset.
"Although Ipswich are a Championship team, that can make them even more dangerous," the Spain international said. "Their motivation will be very high - these will be the biggest two games of their year.
q.gif
p-e4m3Yko6bFYVc.gif

"They will be desperate to beat us, they will want to show their strengths, and their motivation will be as high as possible.
"If we want to get through we will have to match that motivation, if not raise it further."
Fabregas could again be on the bench, with Wenger keen to keep his players fresh for the challenges ahead, which continue to come thick and fast - with a trip to relegation-battlers West Ham on Saturday swiftly followed by their FA Cup third-round replay at Elland Road next Wednesday.
Wojciech Szczesny looks set for another start in goal, with former number one Manuel Almunia now understood to be on the verge of a transfer to Galatasaray.
Young Poland stopper Szczesny - who had a productive loan spell with Brentford last season - has impressed in his outings so far, which included a Barclays Premier League clash at Old Trafford.
The 20-year-old, though, also urged against complacency tomorrow.
"The thing about the cups is that you can play a struggling team who are having a fantastic run in the competition," said Szczesny. "It is a bit like my friends at Brentford earlier this season - they were having problems in League One, but they did well in the Carling Cup and beat Everton.
"The cup is always different in nature. You know that teams likes Ipswich will have a big buzz, they will go for it.
"They will be good games and we just need to make sure that we win them."
Much has been made of Arsenal's trophy drought since lifting the FA Cup at the Millennium Stadium in 2005.
Wenger, though, insists his team will focus only on the job in hand tomorrow.
"That we have not won a trophy for five years will not have a big influence on the match against Ipswich," the Arsenal manager said.
"What will have a big influence on us is that we are two games away from the final, and we want to go there.
"We will be highly motivated to do it.
"We will go to Ipswich to do the job well and to turn up with a better performance than on Saturday."
Arsenal have some worries in defence, as full-back Bacary Sagna is suspended after his red card against Manchester City and Sebastien Squillaci struggling with a hamstring problem.
Reserve-team captain Ignasi Miquel, 18, was called up into the squad for the FA Cup tie against Leeds and could feature again tomorrow.
Thomas Vermaelen is still not yet match-fit and Wenger accepts that should Squillaci's injury prove serious, he would have to move in quickly to bring in cover, with Bolton's Gary Cahill and Werder Bremen's German international stopper Per Mertesacker both reported targets.
However, Arsenal chairman Peter Hill-Wood has confirmed there is no chance Thierry Henry will re-sign for the Gunners, after the former skipper returned to train at the club as he gets fit for the new Major League Soccer season with New York Red Bulls.

Jewell: I won't boss Ipswich against Arsenal

Ipswich head into their Carling Cup semi-final clash with Arsenal buoyed by the arrival of new manager Paul Jewell, but with a 7-0 FA Cup defeat to Chelsea fresh in their minds.
Coach Ian McParland was in charge of the side, before Jewell's appointment was announced, as Salomon Kalou, Daniel Sturridge (2), Frank Lampard (2), Nicolas Anelka and an own goal from Carlos Edwards ensured that the Suffolk outfit would not progress to the next round.
Surprisingly, Jewell has revealed that McParland and Tony Loughlan will remain in control of the Tractor Boys for the visit of Arsene Wenger's outfit before he starts work with the players on Thursday morning.
"Tony and Ian will be in charge on Wednesday and I will take charge on Thursday," explained Jewell. "I've not even met the players or the staff yet, it's been a real whirlwind and I don't want to cause a distraction."

The former Wigan manager has the task of firing the Suffolk side out of a disappointing 19th place in the Championship, languishing three points above the relegation zone.
Despite Jewell's management career being on ice since his dismissal from Derby in December 2008, Ipswich owner Marcus Evans believes he has the qualities and experience to turn the club's fortunes around after Roy Keane's tenure came to an end after nearly two years.
Speaking to the club's official website, Evans said: "I'm confident Paul can put in the building blocks that will allow us to achieve our long term goals for this great club.
"Paul's credentials made him our number one target."
Ispwich arrive at this stage of the Carling Cup by virtue of a 1-0 win over West Brom having previously put paid to Northampton, Millwall, Crewe and Exeter.
Arsenal, however, have disposed of exclusively Premier League opposition, beating Wigan, Newcastle and local rivals Tottenham on their road to the semi-finals.
The two-legged tie begins at Portman Road on Wednesday and after a weekend of FA Cup third round shocks, including wins for Crawley and Stevenage over Derby and Newcastle respectively, Ipswich fans will be hopeful of another surprise.
Midfielder Grant Leadbitter is absent as he serves the second of a three-match ban but on-loan duo defender Darren O'Dea and midfielder Jake Livermore have been given permission to play by their parent clubs Celtic and Tottenham.
Captain Gareth McAuley should continue in the side following his recovery from an Achilles injury, but goalkeeper Brian Murphy will be out for at least three months with an ankle injury.
Winger Shane O'Connor also remains on the sidelines with a ruptured and dislocated shoulder joint and will miss six weeks.
Young midfielder Luke Hyam is out with a hamstring injury to complete a lengthy injury list.

Platini in 'face the music' warning to big-spending clubs

Published 15:31 11/01/11 By MirrorFootball

Michel Platini has warned that even Europe's biggest clubs will have to "face the music" if they do not comply with UEFA's new financial fair play rules.
UEFA's latest figures show that financial problems affecting European clubs are getting worse, with spending on player wages up almost 10% - and increasing at a faster rate than income.
Under their new rules, clubs will face possible bans from European competition from the 2014-15 season if they spend more than they earn in the three years before.
Manchester City's recent £121million losses mean they are the club in England facing the greatest difficulty to abide by the rules - even though owners are also allowed to inject £12million a year (€15m) into their club.

Leading Italian clubs also face problems but UEFA president Platini said whatever their stature, the European governing body would not hesitate to take action.
"If a club doesn't fall in line and follow the same rules as everyone else then it will be time to face the music. said Platini, speaking at UEFA's headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland.
"Certainly it is not something we want to see. Our objective is not to put clubs into financial difficulty. Financial fair play is to help them escape from this devilish spiral and have a viable economic strategy in the long term.
"This is not a witch-hunt, this is so they no longer continue blindly and mindlessly."
Manchester City have already sent officials to meet UEFA about complying with the financial rules.
Andrea Traverso, UEFA's head of licensing, said: "We are in talks with the club - they are aware of the rules and they probably have a strategy to raise their income.
"They have been to see us and they are confident that they can manage this challenge."
Platini added: "Last year in Abu Dhabi I met up with the owner of Manchester City and he promised they would live with the rules and regulations."
The European Clubs' Association (ECA) has thrown their weight behind the new rules.
ECA chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said: "It's time to step on the brake and bring a bit of rationality to football."
***
FACTS ABOUT UEFA'S FINANCIAL FAIR PLAY RULES
* Clubs could be banned from European competition from the 2014-15 season onwards if they do not comply with the new rules.
* The rules state clubs must break even over a three-year period - ie, not repeatedly spend more than they earn.
* Club owners will be allowed to put in up to €15million a year but only as equity, not a loan. This figure will then drop to €10million annually.
* Clubs will be able to spend as much as they want on stadiums, training facilities and youth football.
* UEFA will have a range of sanctions from warnings to a transfer ban to exclusion from European tournaments.
