Wamarekani kufunza Watanzania sanaa

Majimaji hold poor Yanga

From JUMA NYUMAYO, Songea, 5th February 2011 @ 12:00, Total Comments: 0, Hits: 204

TROUBLED Young Africans have continued to suffer from their off-field problems, following yet another disappointing result after battling to a barren draw with Majimaji of Songea here on Saturday.

Heavy rain that poured the town yesterday could not prevent fans from flocking the famous Majimaji Stadium to witness the top flight match that was thrilling and entertaining.

Yanga played the match at the backdrop of immense internal strife that has seen the team unbeaten Premier League record being easily broken by Mtibwa Sugar after a 0-1 defeat at the Uhuru Stadium on Wednesday And, in the yesterday's match the hosts were a better side and should count themselves unlucky, after match referee disallowed Kulwa Mobi's 77th minute strike that seemed to have crossed the line.

Yanga needed a win to give them a nice buffer zone of four points lead but such dream was far fetching yesterday, basing on the kind of performance that was displayed by the Jangwani Street side.

Fred Felix Minziro, who managed just a point since he took charge of the team as stand in coach, will be cursing himself and he will definitely be pleased with the arrival of Uganda coach Sam Timbe, who is expected to officially take charge of Yanga from tomorrow as head coach.

May be the Ugandan tactician, who steps in the shoes of Serbian Kostadin Papic could steady the vessel.

Papic deserted the club following a disagreement with the club leadership. Despite the draw Yanga remained glued at the top of the Premier League table on 32 and are two games ahead to their rivals and second placed Simba, who are on 30 points.

Their Premier League lead is however; now at stake as their arch rivals and defending Champions Simba could go a point above them should they win their tricky match against Polisi Dodoma at the Jamhuri Stadium on Sunday.

In Arusha host AFC managed a surprise 1-0 win over Ruvu Shooting at the Sheikh Amri Abeid Stadium, reports John Mhala.

Abdallah Juma scored the solitary goal after an hour mark as the rejuvenated AFC surprised many with a spirited fight and some glimpse of eye catching football.

They are still at the bottom of the 12- team league and could slightly lift themselves up when they play host to Majimaji of Songea at the same venue on Wednesday. In Bukoba hosts Kagera Sugar beat Mtibwa Sugar 1-0 at the Kaitaba Stadium.

Why Kilimanjaro Marathon should be on your 'must do' list

By SUNDAY NEWS reporter, 5th February 2011 @ 12:00, Total Comments: 0, Hits: 36

IN 2003 a small group of about 750 runners lined up at the gate of Keys Hotel in Moshi in the early morning sunshine to register for the inaugural Kilimanjaro Marathon.

That race was won by a Tanzanian – naturally enough, as there were no foreign runners that year – Lucian Hombo, who clocked 2:16.25 – and went into the records as the first athlete to win the first Kili Marathon ever! It was the start of something great.

It was the first Kilimanjaro Marathon. Since then the race has grown into one of Africa’s biggest and best known marathons, and will be run for the 9th time on 27 February 2011.

The consistent growth in the popularity of the Kilimanjaro Marathon since its inception was mirrored by the thousands of runners who turned up to run under the roof of Africa’s highest mountain last year.

A total of over 4,500 runners and over 10,000 spectators that lined the Moshi roadways is a strong testament to the passion and popularity of long distance running in Tanzania.

Building on the success achieved over the years, Kilimanjaro Premium Lager presents 2011 Kilimanjaro Marathon for the ninth time.

There is going to be over 4,500 runners, over five corporate teams, and over 35 countries taking part.

The Kilimanjaro Marathon characterise the values and attitude that Kilimanjaro Premium Lager believes in, and lives by every day.

Partnership, teamwork, courage, willpower, the determination to “go to greater heights” and a “can-do” attitude, all of which are Kilimanjaro Premium Lager’s core values, will be key factors in determining the winners.

"Kilimanjaro Marathon has now become a world class event with over 35 participating countries. The race attracts high quality international athletes - giving the opportunity for young talent to test themselves against top competition and develop crucial marathon experience," said Kilimanjaro Premium Lager brand manager George Kavishe.

Kilimanjaro Premium Lager, which draws its name from the highest mountain in Africa, Mount Kilimanjaro remains the title sponsor todate.

It is also after this mountain – at 5,895 the highest stand-alone mountain in the world – that the country’s most famous athletic sport, the Kilimanjaro Marathon, is named.

It would be remiss here not to make honourable mention of the co-sponsors of the event. These include Vodacom (5km Fun Run), CFAO DT Dobie, Keys Hotels, KK Security, Tanga Cement, TanzaniteOne, TPC Sugar, Precisionair, Tanzania Tourist Board and Kilimanjaro Water.

Following Kilimanjaro Marathon’s initial success, further successes have been chalked up, with the number of participants rising over the years.

Foreigners also have come aboard, thereby rendering the race a truly international event. The Kilimanjaro Marathon is a formally accredited an international race recognized by the International Amateur Athletics Federation (IAAF).

It is also registered with AIMS, and has the official backing of Athletics Tanzania (AT), and the Tanzania Tourist Board (TTB). Therefore, not only does the event in essence promote the sport, but it also markets the country at home and abroad as a tourist paradise.

Complete with an ice cap in the middle of nowhere along the Equator, Mount Kilimanjaro’s sheer presence is awesome, dominating as it does the surrounding area with an aura of solemn majesty.

The triple-peaked mountain – with the highest summit, Kibo, the sheerest, Mawenzi, and the lower truncated Shira – is a sight not to be missed in one’s lifetime.

The Kilimanjaro Marathon incorporates two races, the Full Marathon covering the standard 42.2 kilometres; and the 21.1-kilometre Half-Marathon.

Runners who see the Full and the Half-Marathon bothersome for some reason or other can participate in the equally exciting ‘Fun Race,’ which covers five kilometres.

The route starts and ends at the University of Business and Cooperative Studies (MUCCOBS) Stadium.

At the start, runners head down towards the town, and then all the way up to Arusha Road through Moshi town.

This section of the route is relatively flat, and there are plenty of well-wishers along it shouting encouragement at the runners.

The athletes then turn around and head back to Moshi town, tracking down into town before turning to face the Kilimanjaro itself as they head up a long, steady ascent towards Mweka, which is home to one of the world’s best-known Wildlife Colleges.

The uphill climb is gradual. And, with Kilimanjaro towering above and to the distance – and local villagers turning out in force to cheer the athletes on – time and distance are eaten up rapidly as if by magic! The turnaround point marks approximately 32 kilometres, with the last section of the route being a fast downhill run back to the stadium.

Strategically-positioned ‘water and sponging points' keep the runners refreshed and cool along the entire route.

The route passes through panoramic views of Moshi town, smallholder mixed farms and banana/coffee plantations, villages, and patches of forest.

All these combine to provide great excitement to the residents who give forth ample vocal support, and succour to runners who gulp it all down with gusto and renewed determination to win.

While the athletes are on the road, the atmosphere back at the Stadium remains electric, with local bands playing music, and other entertainment groups straining to outdo each other in a festive effort to hold the crowd on tenterhooks.

There is also an abundance of food, cold Kili Lager and other beverages on sale for those who have acquired parched throats from the cheering.

The logistics of the operation for the February 27th 2011 event are being run by Wild Frontiers, Executive Solutions, and the Kilimanjaro Marathon Club, working in collaboration with members of both Athletics Tanzania and the local Kilimanjaro Amateur Athletics Association (KAAA).

This year’s Kili Marathon is projected to bring together world-class athletes, as well as ‘social runners,’ to Tanzania, with the Roof of Africa, Mount Kilimanjaro, as the backdrop.

At this point in time – if not in space – the Kilimanjaro Marathon is at your door step … Therefore, grab those running shoes and join in the race. You never know, the top prize might be yours this time round!

Wenger hits out at Barton

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger blasted Joey Barton after seeing his side squander a four-goal lead at Newcastle and leave with only a point.
The Gunners wasted an opportunity to pile pressure on Barclays Premier League leaders Manchester United, despite going 3-0 up at St James' Park within 10 minutes and scoring a fourth 16 minutes later.

However, after midfielder Abou Diaby had been sent off three minutes after the restart for pushing Barton to the ground following a rugged challenge, they crumbled and shipped four goals inside 19 bewildering minutes, the last of them Cheik Tiote's stunning 87th-minute equaliser.
Wenger, who was also critical of the two penalties awarded by referee Phil Dowd, said: "It was a completely unnecessary sending-off, and I believe Barton was very lucky to stay on the pitch for the tackle on Diaby.
"It's a shame [for Diaby] because he had a great first half. Sometimes you could understand when he has a bad game, but he had an outstanding game.
"I explain that by the fact that he has been injured so many times from bad tackles that he lost a bit quickly his nerves because this boy has been out for a long time and many times.
"Certainly the tackle provoked his reaction."

Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere condemned the decision-making of Dowd - and claimed inconsistent officiating is "killing the game".

Wilshere believes a later incident involving Kevin Nolan and Wojciech Szczesny, in the immediate aftermath of the first of Barton's two penalties, was just as serious and should have seen the Newcastle captain receive the same punishment as Diaby.
In a post on his official Twitter page, Wilshere wrote: "Inconsistent refereing needs to stop.its killing the game.if Diaby goes..whats the difference between that and Nolan on our keeper!?? £joke"

The criticism of the officiating could leave 19-year-old Wilshere open to Football Association action.
Former Liverpool striker Ryan Babel was fined £10,000 by the FA last month when he posted a doctored photo of referee Howard Webb in a Manchester United shirt, following a 1-0 defeat for Kenny Dalglish's team at Old Trafford.
However, Newcastle manager Alan Pardew was quick to defend Barton, whose England claims he promoted once again.
Pardew said: "You have got to make a challenge. It was a proper, honest challenge - I have seen it two or three times and there's nothing wrong with it.
"He goes for the ball, he wins the ball clean. He is aggressive in the challenge, he takes a little bit of the player after he has won the ball."
Newcastle looked dead and buried after being taken apart inside the opening 10 minutes of a remarkable game.
It took Theo Walcott just 42 seconds to give the visitors the lead, and when Johan Djourou added a second goal barely two minutes later, the writing was apparently on the wall.
It was to get much worse for Newcastle, with Robin van Persie's double sending the Gunners in at the break four goals to the good.
Diaby's senseless 48th-minute dismissal sparked Newcastle into life, but few among a crowd of 51,561 inside St James' Park could have expected the drama which unfolded thereafter.
Barton's 68th-minute penalty seemed little more than a consolation, but when he converted from the spot for a second time with seven minutes remaining after Leon Best had already made it 4-2 from close range, Arsenal were crumbling.
But Newcastle saved the best for last when, with three minutes remaining, Tiote smashed a superb volley into Szczesny's bottom corner to claim a precious point.
Asked if the drama of Andy Carroll's £35million switch to Liverpool on Monday had cast a shadow over the first half, Pardew said: "You must be kidding. Yes.
"That was part of what I said at half-time: 'If you are going to feel sorry for yourself, if you are going to think, okay, it's been a tough week, lost at Fulham, lost a really good young player and take that out into that kind of arena, then you are going to be embarrassed', and they were embarrassed.

"They were a disgrace in some things that we did. The second half, though, more than made up for it.
"It's one of the most remarkable games I have ever been involved in in my life - and I am talking about Sunday mornings as well, 7-7s, I have had, everything."
Wenger admitted the psychological damage inflicted by Newcastle's fightback could have a lasting effect.
Asked about the cost, Wenger said: "Mathematically, two points; psychologically, the damage is a bit bigger tonight because everybody is, of course, very, very disappointed in the dressing room.
"But only the future will tell."

Stoke City 2-2 Sunderland

Robert Huth bundled in a late brace as Stoke twice came back from behind to claim a last-gasp 3-2 win over Sunderland at the Britannia Stadium.
The Black Cats appeared to be moving to within four points of the Champions League places after Asamoah Gyan's ninth goal of the season put them 2-1 up early in the second half.

But Huth claimed an equaliser seven minutes from time after John Carew had cancelled out Kieran Richardson's second-minute opener just after the half-hour, and the German then slid home the winner in stoppage time to stun the visitors.
The first two goals would have left Black Cats boss Steve Bruce fuming as the first looked offside and the second appeared to reach Huth via the arm of Norway international Carew, brought in from Aston Villa last month.
But all would have frustrated the former Manchester United centre-back as they all came from set-pieces which were not well defended.
On a windy day at the Britannia Stadium Sunderland found themselves under something of an aerial bombardment from corners and Rory Delap's long throws.
But until late on they appeared to have weathered the storm, having taken the few chances they had better than their opponents.
And they could not have got off to a better start, taking the lead after just one minute and 52 seconds through the in-form Richardson.
Sunderland striker Gyan's wild thrash at the ball inside the penalty area fortuitously dropped to the midfielder and he hammered home left-footed his fourth goal in his last three matches.
Stoke came close to equalising almost immediately as Etherington's corner dropped to Huth at the far post.
The centre-back's first shot bounced back off the chest of goalkeeper Craig Gordon but he wastefully ballooned over the second from close range.
It signalled a sustained spell of pressure for the Potters, with Nedum Onuoha deflecting wide a Jermaine Pennant shot from the edge of the area and Danny Higginbotham hooking into the side-netting at the far post.
The gusty wind was undoubtedly helping Delap's throw create uncertainty in the Sunderland penalty area and one such set-piece let to Stoke's equaliser, for which Craig Gordon had to take some of the blame.
Delap's 32nd-minute delivery was headed up in the air and as the goalkeeper came to claim he was beaten to the ball by Huth, who was able to nod on via Gordon for Carew to stab home from a yard out for his first in four appearances for his new club.
Debate raged over its legitimacy as Carew was in an offside position but there was an element of doubt as to whether the ball had actually come off Gordon.
It quickly subsided three minutes after the break as Sunderland went ahead for the second time.
Etherington ran into trouble 15 yards into Sunderland's half and Black Cats debutant Sulley Muntari, on loan from Inter Milan, quickly launched the ball forward, catching Huth exposed to a one-one-one with Gyan

. The Stoke centre-back got himself in a complete tangle in the penalty area, allowing the Ghana international to cut back inside and fire past Asmir Begovic for his ninth goal of the season.
Long throws still continued to provide a threat, however, and from one Shawcross' shot was blocked by a packed defence with Delap's fierce strike flattening Phil Bardsley as he headed behind.
But just when it seemed their aerial assault had run its course Stoke struck again seven minutes from time.
It was a scrappy effort but when Pennant curled in a free-kick from the left, Carew's determination got him to the ball before Gordon and he bundled the ball goalwards, with Huth getting the final touch.
Sunderland looked like they were hanging on and, criminally, they cracked again in the third minute of injury time.
Pennant's inswinging delivery from the left again caused problems and Huth slid in from close range to stab the ball past Gordon.

Aston Villa 2-2 Fulham

Updated Feb 5, 2011 6:59 PM ET
Clint Dempsey's 10th goal of the campaign rescued a 2-2 draw for Fulham, after they had twice trailed to Aston Villa at Villa Park.
Villa twice looked set for victory after a John Pantsil own goal and Kyle Walker's first ever league goal put them in the ascendancy.

But Andy Johnson and then Dempsey struck back for Mark Hughes's side.
Villa dominated the first half with winger Stewart Downing causing plenty of problems and linking up well with full-back Walker down the right flank.
Newcomer Jean Makoun also impressed in the middle of the park and Villa deservedly led through the unfortunate Pantsil.
He had also scored an own goal in the corresponding fixture last season.
But it was a different story in the second half as Villa lost momentum and the visitors grew in confidence with skipper David Murphy impressive in the middle of the park.
Villa were first to settle and Downing made a powerful run into the Fulham box and saw his low shot parried by Mark Schwarzer.
Record Villa signing Darren Bent was alert to tuck away the rebound but he had strayed marginally offside.
Downing was looking sharp and it was his quality which led to a Pantsil own goal giving Villa the lead after 13 minutes.
Makoun found the England winger on the right flank and he cut inside before delivering a teasing centre with the outside of his left foot.
Pantsil, under pressure from Gabriel Agbonlahor, could only head the ball past Schwarzer into the corner of the net.
Former Villa midfielder Steve Sidwell had Fulham's first shot on goal after 18 minutes but Brad Friedel was equal to his swerving drive from 20 yards.
Downing was causing constant problems down the right flank with his runs and testing crosses.
A mistake by Villa skipper Stiliyan Petrov allowed Mousa Dembele a free run at the penalty area.
But, after the ball broke to Duff, Villa left-back Ciaran Clark was alert to block his low shot.
Sidwell was only just wide of the target with a low shot which had Friedel scrambling across his goal.
Another error from Petrov played Makoun into trouble and Mousa Dembele tried to take advantage but James Collins made a typical block.
Sidwell brought danger to his side when he brought down Petrov 30 yards out in a central position.
Downing's shot was blocked but Makoun's follow-up effort was only just wide.
Villa began the second half on top and Schwarzer held on to a drive from Agbonlahor.
Bent then failed to make proper contact with a shot after making good ground.
Sidwell was providing the main threat for Fulham and Collins deflected his low attempt for a corner.

But after 52 minutes former Birmingham striker Andy Johnson brought Fulham level.
Friedel parried another shot from Sidwell - and Johnson was first to react to the rebound.
Clark could have restored Villa's lead immediately but failed to make clean contact with his header from Downing's centre.
Agbonlahor then teed up Young but he sliced his shot wide.
Young was yellow carded for a challenge on Sidwell after 62 minutes.
After 72 minutes a long-range strike from Walker restored Villa's lead.
