Hammers boss at breaking point

Published 23:00 18/12/10 By Paul Smith

Avram Grant has virtually reached breaking point at West Ham.
Despite the looming threat of the sack, close friends claim he has been severely undermined and reached the conclusion that it is near impossible to achieve *minimal goals at Upton Park.
A depleted squad of long-term and short-term injuries have left Grant claiming he is now in an *untenable position at Upton Park.
And a significant lack of funds to strengthen the squad leaves the Israeli coach unsurprised to find the Hammers propping up the *Premier League.

This week Grant was given a *temporary stay of execution that amounts to 180 minutes of football to save his job.
Prior to visiting Blackburn *yesterday, the club had taken just 12 points from a possible 51 and *recorded just two home wins all season – against Tottenham and Wigan.
On his appointment, Grant made it clear to the West Ham board that he had a five-year plan, which involved purchasing young players who could develop at the club.
They bought into the idea, but maintained that, while money would be made available, he would have to generate funds by selling players. Grant urgently required a striker and his No1 target was 23-year-old French marksman Loic Remy. The £10million deal had been due to be financed by Carlton Cole’s sale to Liverpool.
But when West Ham *valued Cole at £15million, *Liverpool pulled out and the Remy deal collapsed.
Grant’s future plans were already being severely undermined by *restrictive spending, so he was told to go out and get loan players to strengthen his squad.
Former Portsmouth marksman Frederic Piquionne was only ever intended to be signed as a back-up striker from Lyon. But Grant *quickly realised he was spending £850,000 on a first-team player. Loan players such as Tel Ben-Haim and Victor Obinna were brought into the club as the young players whom Grant had targeted were firmly out of his price range.
The club also maintained recently that they had spent £16million on *players to date – but it can be *revealed they have spent £8million, with payments *structured over three years.
To make matter worse for Grant, he has had to deal with a nightmare injury-list, long-term victims including Danny *Gabbidon, Herita Ilunga, Jack Collison and Thomas Hitzlsperger.
While a host of players are out of contract in the summer, including Matthew Upson, Kieron Dyer, Lars Jacobsen and Gabbidon.
The beginning of the end for Grant came around five weeks ago when calls were made to players and staff to evaluate his training methods. The atmosphere in and around the training ground completely disintegrated as players came to the conclusion Grant was *merely living on borrowed time.
To add injury to insult, Grant was pulled up on Friday by a *senior official for failing to take more than one goalkeeper to Blackburn, following Robert Green’s failure to travel.
And Grant was left stunned to be told that the Ewood Park *outing could be his last game in charge.

Ireland suing City for £1.5m pay-off

Published 23:00 18/12/10 By Simon Mullock

Stephen Ireland is suing Manchester City for £1.5million after being hit in the pocket for failing to keep his mouth shut.
City agreed to give the midfielder the pay-off as compensation for taking a pay cut when he joined Aston Villa as an £8m makeweight in the £24m deal that saw James Milner depart for Manchester.
But the payment hinged on Ireland accepting a confidentiality agreement that would prevent him publicly criticising his former club.
City were furious when Ireland conducted an interview in which he lambasted the Blues.

He accused City's big names of being "money obsessed" and insisted Mancini was unable to build relationships with his players, and warned Milner would soon discover he had made a mistake by moving.
City fired off a letter to Ireland to warn him he was in breach of their agreement.
But he continued to shoot from the lip, Sunday Mirror Sport understands that City's Abu Dhabi-based owners were so angry they ordered the kiss-off to be blocked.
A City insider confirmed: "A confidentiality agreement was agreed when Stephen joined Aston Villa.
"A warning was sent when he subsequently broke that agreement, so when he did it again the payment was withheld."
Now Ireland is ready to go to court to win his money.
Ireland's fall from grace at City was dramatic – and his stock has continued to tumble at Villa Park.
Named player of the year by supporters in 2009 after an outstanding season under Mark Hughes, the Cork-born midfielder's form crumbled the following year.
When Mancini replaced Hughes a year ago he was unable to halt the slump and the Italian questioned whether Ireland was mentally tough enough to succeed at the top level.
When Ireland asked to quit the club City offered him to Villa in part-exchange for Milner only to be stunned when the player demanded a £2m severance package.
Ireland, on £72,000-a-week at City, accepted a £10,000-a-week drop in salary.
Ireland has been such a flop at Villa Park that Gerard Houllier has axed him from his squad after just 12 appearances and is ready to listen to any offers.
Celtic are favourites to land Ireland on a six-month loan deal, although there is interest from both Liverpool and Everton.

Pardew seeking a Taylor-made solution

Published 23:00 18/12/10 By Brian McNally

New Toon boss Alan Pardew has pledged to pull out all the stops to keep contract rebel Steve Taylor at Newcastle – as he faces up to the *prospect of losing Sol Campbell.
Pardew *believes he can break the deadlock in the long-running contract dispute that has seen ex-England under-21 centre back Taylor placed on the transfer lost.
And Toon insiders believe the young centre back has been impressed by the first sight of Pardew's reign.
When the latest round of negotiations with Taylor's agent Paul Stretford ended in stalemate, reports circulated that the player was ready to leave St James' Park. But Pardew told the Sunday *Mirror he is buoyed by his first chat with Taylor and says the *matter is "far from resolved".

Taylor's outlook may be shaped by claims that Campbell, 36, has been unsettled by the *departure of Chris Hughton and could leave St James' Park sooner than expected. There are even suggestions that Newcastle might be *prepared to get the veteran stopper off the wage bill in January, if an offer came in.
But Pardew said: "I have spoken to Steven Taylor this week. He wants a contract that he thinks is fair for his ability. If you are asking me do I want him to stay, the answer is ‘Yes'." Pardew also revealed that he plans in-depth talks with the representatives of Joey Barton and Jose Enrique to clarify their long-term futures.
And he wants to keep Ivory Coast schemer Chiek Tiote at Newcastle for as long as possible, saying: "We need to protect Tiote and ensure he stays for the next five or six years."

Curbs tips United to beat Chelsea: Take on Curbishley and you could win £1million in our predictions game

Published 12:49 17/12/10 By MirrorFootball

Go here to have your shot at beating Alan's predictions and winning £1million
Manchester United will get the better of Chelsea in the weekend's big Premier League clash.
That's the verdict of former West Ham and Charlton boss Alan Curbishley, the top pundit of our brilliant new predictions game Soccer Millionaire.
Curbs knows the game inside out and is one of the country's most experienced football managers with a vast knowledge of the Beautiful Game and an encyclopedic insight into hundreds of top footballers.

Each week he'll be casting an eye over the forthcoming fixtures to predict the results and give you an even better chance to scoop massive money.
Check out Curbs' advice for a steer and you a could hit a huge, life-changing jackpot with the country's most exciting football results prediction game.
Here's his take on the Premier League weekend...
"At this stage of the season, the league table is beginning to take shape, tactics have been bedded down and managers have a good knowledge of the strengths and weaknesses of their squads, and I am not predicting any surprises in the majority of the games this week.
"For that reason, I see Arsenal and Liverpool, two teams that have improved in recent weeks, being too strong for Stoke and Fulham. Arsenal are always quick starters at the Emirates and I would expect to see them ahead early.
"The big game of the weekend is at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea have had a terrible few weeks and will be desperate for a win over the leaders. It's a tough call, but I have gone for Manchester United to win. They are unbeaten all season and off the back of a huge win over Arsenal on Monday.
"Although neither side has been at their best, United are grinding out results and this is a good time to go to Chelsea. If I am right, the impact on both clubs, and the season, will be massive.
"Spurs are playing good football, and the game at Blackpool will be entertaining, no doubt about it. But Spurs will be very confident, and I think they will have too much for the Seasiders.
"I like Birmingham over Newcastle. Birmingham are well organised and strong at home and Newcastle, despite a good win last week, have not travelled well in recent weeks.
"It has been a tough week for fans of Blackburn and Man City, and it will be interesting to see how both teams react. Avram Grant desperately needs a win and will travel with high hopes that the departure of Big Sam will disrupt Blackburn, but I think that the home team will want to put on a good show for their fans and I see them as comfortable winners.
"Everton are tough opponents for City, who have learnt heavily on Carlos Tevez for goals this season, and I can see this one being a draw. Look out for some lively challenges and a red card in this one."

Will Arsene Wenger soon be working out team formations on an iPad?

Will Arsene Wenger soon be obliged to work out his team's formation on an iPad?
The Mole only asks after hearing that Arsenal have had tentative talks with Apple over a sponsorship deal.
The move comes as Premier League clubs bid to raise their revenues by having more than one sponsor's name on their kit – but only one is allowed at present.
A tie-in with Apple would suit the Gunners who trail behind the big boys in their shirt sponsorship revenue.

**************
Harry Redknapp will be looking for an old friend at Blackpool today.
Twenty-five years ago he took Bournemouth to Bloomfield Road.
The Spurs boss *recalled the Seasiders' fan who kept *barracking him in the *dug-out.
"When we went 1-0 down, he kept looking in saying: ‘Don't cry, Harry. It isn't that important.'
"We took about 30 fans up there in one coach and they were singing ‘Harry Redknapp's Red and White Army'.
"Then the bloke started again. ‘It's like the Kop *singing for Dalglish, isn't it Harry?'
"He never stopped. I had a player sitting next to me called Tom Heffernan.
"He was the hardest man I have ever met in *football.
"His party trick was heading cricket balls. "He offered to keep the fan quiet but I told him to leave it.
"Anyway, we won the game 3-1. I looked round and he had gone.
"I've never been back there since."
