Angola frees four activists jailed over Togo attack

The Togolese team was on its way to the tournament in January when the bus was attacked

Four human rights activists in Angola arrested over the deadly attack on the Togolese football team in January have been released from prison.
They were taken into custody in the wake of the attack on the team as it arrived for the African Cup of Nations.
In August the men were found guilty of having links to a separatist group which said it was behind the shooting.
However, the attorney general for Cabinda province said their conviction was based on outdated legislation.
Rights organisations have accused Angola of using the 30-minute machine gun attack on the Togolese football team to justify a crackdown on its critics in the province of Cabinda.
The four men - a Catholic priest, a university professor, a lawyer and a former policeman - had been sentenced to prison terms of between three and six years for the attack.
Two Togolese officials were killed in the shooting; the Angolan driver, who was originally reported to have died, survived the attack - which a faction of the Front for the Liberation of the Enclave of Cabinda (Flec) said it carried out.
Cabinda's public prosecutor confirmed that the men have now been released and reunited with their families.

The BBC's former Angola correspondent Louise Redvers says their actions boiled down to possession of material about Flec and contact they had made with the rebel leaders to discuss the future of Cabinda.
Meanwhile, the trial of two other men accused of January's shooting continues, our reporter says.
Angolan Daniel Simba and Joao Antonio Pauti, from Congo-Brazzaville, deny any links to Flec, whose leaders are based in France and Switzerland.
Last week an Angolan with French citizenship was arrested in Paris in connection with the attack.
Flec has been fighting for three decades for independence in Cabinda, an area separated from Angola by a strip of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Despite being rich in oil, the region is one of the poorest in the country.

Houllier prepares for ruthless cull of Villa squad in January

Published 23:00 25/12/10 By Ralph Ellis

Gerard Houllier is winning his battle to get Aston Villa's players behind his new regime.
That's the view of defender Carlos Cuellar as Houllier prepares for a ruthless January transfer window reshaping the squad he was left by Martin O'Neill.
Villa, sixth in each of the past three seasons, have slumped down among the relegation clubs and won only three of 12 Premier League games since the 63-year-old Frenchman took charge.
But Spanish ace Cuellar, restored to the side after Houllier fell out with skipper Richard Dunne, insists they can still finish in the top six.

He said: "It is normal when you have a change of manager that it takes time while you need to have a chance to know what he wants, and he needs to know what his side is. It is new for everybody.
"It's new about the style of football, about the training, everything has changed, but now after two and a half months we know him and he knows us and the team is coming up.
"I have been through two or three occasions in my career in Spain when the manager changed. Always the change is good because there are people who have an opportunity who were not playing before, and it gets more confidence and more focus in your job.
"You need to demonstrate to your coach that you are fit and ready for play, and that I think brings a high level physically and athletically and technically for everyone."
Villa face Spurs on TV tonight needing urgently to build on the win over West Brom in their last home game which saved their boss from an immediate crisis.
Since then Houllier has had meetings with owner Randy Lerner to settle a strategy for the January transfer window and has ruthlessly prepared to get some of the club's top earning fringe players off the wage bill.
Steve Sidwell's move to West Ham will begin an exodus with Houllier planning to stick with his policy of promoting the club's youngsters like Ciaran Clark, Marc Albrighton, Barry Bannan and Jonathan Hogg.
Cuellar said: "The younger players are doing so well, they have adapted very quickly to the Premier League, and they are playing better level than some of the big players.
"I think it is a big moment for us now. We won the last game and the team are all together, we are looking forward to pushing up again and to try to get to the top six. I think the team is good, is confident now after the last one
"We can still finish so high because it is really tight in the League, and if you win two or three games and you don't lose matches then you can get to the top four.
"We have a team with really good players to start to win again. We are starting to play good football, we are improving, the team will get better and we can still have the opportunity to get into the top four, definitely, we are looking for it."

Stoke's Mamady Sidibe eyes January return to action

Mali international Sidibe hopes to be back in action for Stoke in January

Mali and Stoke City striker Mamady Sidibe is eyeing a possible return to action in January.
The 30-year-old has not played since he snapped his Achilles tendon in August, just two games into the new season.
Speaking to local newspaper The Sentinel, Sidibe said his recovery was going according to plan.
"I haven't touched a football yet, but there has been no setback and I had good news from the specialist," Sidibe told the newspaper.
It was initially thought that Sidibe would be out for most of the season, but his recovery now appears to be ahead of schedule.
"To get injured in just the second game of the season was a horrible thing to happen.
"But now things are moving in the right direction and I have been doing a lot of running to make sure I get back to full fitness quickly," he said.
"There is still some work to be done, but hopefully I'll be back sometime in January. It has been very frustrating for me to be out for so long," Sidibe concluded.

Sierra Leone international Kallon set to leave China

By Mohammed Fajah Barrie
BBC Sports, Freetown.

Kallon has confirmed he will quit Chinese club Shaanxi Chanba

Sierra Leone star striker Mohammed Kallon is set to quit Chinese Super League club Shaanxi Chanba.
Kallon's 10-month contract with the Xian based team ends on 31 December and he says he will not renew it.
According to the 31-year-old he wants to spend more time with his family who live in the United States.
"Shaanxi want to renew my contract but I want be near my daughter who is in school in the USA," Kallon told BBC Sport.
"My daughter is in school in the US because there are no English speaking schools in Xian and I'm not happy about that," Kallon continued.
The former Inter Milan and Monaco striker played 19 times for the side in the season that ended in November and was the league's highest goal scorer with six goals.
The much-travelled Kallon, who has played for 16 teams in Africa, Europe and Asia, says he has already received several offers.
"I've had offers from clubs in other Asian countries, Europe and the USA and my decision will be based on what's best for my family."
"I will take my time and make my final decision in January," Kallon stated.
Kallon, who has over 30 caps for Leone Stars since he made his international debut 15 years ago, has been left out of Sierra Leone's two last qualifiers for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations.

Sponsorship row blights Nigeria

By Oluwashina Okeleji
BBC Sport, Lagos

Aminu Maigari's NFF oppose the historic sponsorship deal

A sponsorship row between Nigeria's Football Federation (NFF) and organisers of the local league is threatening the domestic game.
The Nigeria Premier League (NPL) secured a record US$17m four-year deal with mobile phone company MTN last week in a move that earned the praise of clubs in the top division.
But that celebration has been cut short by the NFF, which insists the decision is unacceptable.
With the highly-publicised spat taking centre stage, NFF spokesman Ademola Olajire told BBC Sport that the NPL decision leaves the league in a difficult situation.
"The NFF has made its position clear that the decision by the NPL board to go contrary to the standard norms and protocols which such an issue demanded is unacceptable," he said.
"It is a difficult position because they [NPL] refused to carry the NFF, the supreme authority for all matters relating to football in the country, along.
"Importantly, there is an unresolved leadership issue involving them [the NPL] - and taking such a big corporate decision now is totally wrong."
NPL chairman Davidson Owumi, whose election victory has been contested by beaten foe Victor Baribote, says his body has done the right thing for the country's domestic football.
"The league started without a title sponsor and what we have done now is in the best interest of the Nigerian Premier League," Owumi said.
"The NPL board had a transparent bid, the right thing was done, honesty and truth was followed - that is all we can say for now."
Clubs in the top league have embraced the new deal after the season kicked off two months ago without a title sponsor.
The chairman of Nigeria's Club Owners, David Suleiman, says the agreed venture will help cash-strapped clubs in their bid to escape from often-dire financial plight.
Last week, domestic players and coaches marched on the country's parliament in the capital Abuja in protest of their poor working conditions.
According to the Association of Professional Footballers of Nigeria, the protest was carried out due to the non-payment of players' entitlements by clubs among other issues.

Zambia President backs Fifa help

By Kennedy Gondwe
BBC Sport, Lusaka

Banda recently phoned Sepp Blatter to ask for help on the Faz split

Zambian President Rupiah Banda says he is happy that Fifa has intervened in the wrangles currently rocking his nation's favourite sport.
World football's governing body ruled on Monday that only Kalusha Bwalya is the legitimate president of the Football Association of Zambia (Faz).
However, Fifa says Faz members are free to pass a vote of no-confidence against Bwalya during the body's annual general meeting next March.
A rival group headed up by Andrew Kamanga has already indicated that it will pass a vote of no-confidence in Bwalya's committee and force elections.
"They are supposed to be having a meeting in March - the council meeting/AGM of Faz," said Banda, a veteran football administrator and ardent fan.
Banda, who is also the patron of Faz, said he was happy there was now a possibility of elections during the March meeting.
"I think those who want to pass a vote of no-confidence will then raise the matter and if they succeed, they will then have elections.
"So it's been a positive thing to say that a new element has been added to it."
Zambia currently has two parallel Faz executives after the election of Kamanga by two thirds of the association's members.
The businessman's election came after four members of Bwalya's executive resigned in September, leading to claims that the committee had automatically dissolved itself as they could no longer form a quorum to transact any business.
An impasse between the two executives ensued as the both claimed legitimacy, prompting president Banda to phone Fifa boss Sepp Blatter to help resolve the matter.

Blackpool defender eyeing famous double over Liverpool

Published 23:00 25/12/10 By Jeremy Butler

Craig Cathcart admits he's loving Blackpool's crazy gang spirit now he's finally got used to living without luxury.
The defender quit the opulent surroundings of Old Trafford in the summer in search of regular first team football.
He joined up with Ian Holloway's band of merry men knowing that meant an end to comfortable days he enjoyed at United.
And he's certainly had a culture shock. Cathcart has been washing his own kit and this week took to the beach after club's frozen training ground pitches were ruled out of bounds.

He said: "It's a different world to a lot of clubs in the Premier League here at Blackpool. It's completely different and a different experience.
"It feels like real football here and when I've gone on loan in the Championship in the past it's felt like that as well.
"Things are different to the way it was at United but I've learned not to get too worked up and just chill out.
"Obviously the manager is responsible for that as well. If we can't train then we do team bonding and other stuff.
"We've been to the beach again this week and we've been in different places and everybody is getting together but hopefully we'll soon get back on the training pitch and do what we do best.''
He added: "The good thing is there are no prima donnas at Blackpool.
"We have not been bothered about the pitch and the fact we can't train on it.
"The lads who have been here for a while know it doesn't have underground heating, probably the only one in the Premier League that hasn't, but the lads have coped with it well."
The Belfast-born star has no regrets over his decision to strike out from the United fold.
And whilst the doomsayers warned he was setting out on a downward path by joining Blackpool, Cathcart has excelled in a Tangerine team that has taken the top flight by storm.
He added: "The lure of Premier League football brought me here.
"I could have gone to a championship club on loan but when I spoke to the manager he gave me a lot of faith.
"Maybe I was a little bit sceptical when I first came but when I saw the first training session and the standard of the players, it surprised me really and it has not dropped at all.
"The players have done well and gelled really well.''
Blackpool proved they are worthy of their Premier League status by beating Liverpool at Anfield and astonishingly Cathcart is about to try and land a famous double over the Anfield mob.
He added: "In Northern Ireland you support either Liverpool or Man United and I was a Man United fan so to get one over on them at Anfield was brilliant for me.
"I had family at that game and if we could do it again it would be brilliant. To win the game would be unbelievable."

Bruce: We could smash transfer record again in 2011

Published 23:00 25/12/10 By Brian McNally

Sunderland boss Steve Bruce believes that he could again smash the club's transfer record in 2011 despite chairman Niall Quinn's concerns over falling gates at the Stadium of Light.
And as Bruce *prepares to return to his former Old Trafford stamping ground he has revealed that he tried to sign former team-mate David Beckham last year.
Bruce is again on the trail of long-term target Charles N'Zogbia, but may have to wait until the summer transfer window to get his man.
But the Black Cats boss is confident that if the right player comes along American owner Ellis Short will back him in the way he did in August when he found £13million to buy Ghana World Cup striker Asamaoh Gyan.

Bruce said: "I had dinner with the owner last week and he is excited about the future ahead and now he is excited I wouldn't rule it out that we can still go on and smash our transfer record as long as the owner keeps doing what he has done in the past.
"I don't think it will be January because I believe now that there is nobody out there.
"We are in a situation where I believe - and I have said this to Niall Quinn - that we have to keep improving the squad. That's a manager for you – if anyone thinks you are quite happy it is time to pack in. We need one now. One not two. Top, top players.
"Eighteen months ago with the budget I had we probably needed five or six players, now if I had a budget of £10million, then I would spend it on one player.
"It is maybe one of the things I have learned from Sir Alex Ferguson. He has always been prepared to pay big money for up and coming players such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney. If I get the chance I am going to go young too."
But Bruce admits that he did look at the other end of the market a year ago when he tried to beat AC Milan to England legend Beckham.
Bruce added: "I used to be his skipper at Manchester United and thought my influence might work.
"I tried to sign Beckham18 months ago. I did try when he went to Milan.
He just said thanks Brucey I'm going to Milan. I understand that. Milan and Prada or Sunderland and Primark?"
But Bruce's first priority will be to tray and secure loan star Nedum Onuoha on a permanent deal from Manchester City.

Real Madrid and Chelsea plot sensational Beckham swoop - Exclusive

Published 23:00 25/12/10 By Paul Smith

Jose Mourinho and Carlo Ancelotti are weighing up a sensational swoop for David Beckham.
The 35-year-old former England captain has had a change of heart about returning to Europe on loan in January.
Beckham ruptured his Achilles during a second loan spell at Italian giants AC Milan this year and LA Galaxy have opposed another loan deal for the fear their talisman could get injured.
A nostalgic return to Real Madrid – where he spent four years following a move from Manchester United in 2003 – will almost appeal to Beckham.

He will not be guaranteed first-team football at the Bernabeu but up to eight Premier League clubs are more than willing to give him a starting place.
Among those is Chelsea boss Ancelotti, who brokered the deal for Beckham to join Milan on loan in December 2008. But Beckham has always maintained that he is unlikely to play for another English club other than Manchester United.
However with Chelsea out of form and struggling with injuries to key players, Ancelotti will set out some persuasive arguments to convince Beckham to come to Stamford Bridge next month.
Despite being overlooked by Fabio Capello, Beckham refuses to give up on his dream of playing for England again.

Wear a snood and you'll get the sack, Moyes warns Everton stars

Published 23:00 25/12/10 By Derick Allsop

Whatever Christmas presents David Moyes gave out to his players and staff you can be sure they weren't snoods.
The real men of Goodison Park will bare their necks in defiance against Birmingham today.
And kit man Jimmy Martin and his crew will just be glad to keep theirs!
Football's latest craze to beat the freeze has been given the cold shoulder by the self-proclaimed people's club.

Manager Moyes revealed the sack (and not Santa's) was awaiting anyone who dared lay out snoods with the kit for the match at Manchester City last Monday
Moyes' men, reduced to 10 for much of the second half, fended off City's muffled superstars as the temperature plunged to -9C to register an heroic 2-1 win.
The no-nonsense Scot said: "I was *looking for the kit men before the match and couldn't get to them to say that if any of them put in snoods I was going to sack them.
"But when we got to Man City the kit man says, ‘Gaffer, do you think we are bloody daft? There's no chance.'
"So it didn't come from the manager, it came from the kit man.
"He said there was no way the players were wearing any of those.
"It was great and in a way epitomised the club.
"We're not saying snoods have anything to do with how you play, but I couldn't wear one and that's what the kit men thought.
"Everton is a hard-working club and the supporters see that commitment.
"I did say to the players the other night they ought to wear T-shirts underneath because it was so cold and if they had worn gloves no-one would have complained.
"It was only afterwards someone said our boys were out in short sleeves!
"I hadn't noticed. And there was me, standing with gloves and a big coat on. They'd be saying that big woosy used to be a centre-half."
No one typifies Everton's resilience more forcibly than goalkeeper Tim Howard, whose instinctive saves and bravery helped secure the three points at Eastlands.
The American, in his fifth season at Goodison after being discarded by Manchester United, has established himself as a pillar of the club.
Moyes said: "He's been a really good signing and sort of given himself up to the club.
"He's one of the boys who are ingrained in Everton and I like that.
They nearly have a tattoo on their arm to show that they're here.
"I don't know what Sir Alex (Ferguson) thinks but he's moved his goalkeepers on quite quickly if they're not quite what he wants.
"I think it took a little bit of the heat off Tim coming here after Manchester United.
"The boys think Tim's a terrific goalkeeper and if you have a goalkeeper you can really trust and believe it can make a massive difference.
"I think over recent years Pepe Reina has been arguably Liverpool's best signing.
"He's done brilliantly for them. It's the one position where Liverpool are *really sound."

Herieth Makwetta

Amini
Mashabiki wategemee kupata ile kitu roho inapenda, kwani katika muziki wangu jinsi nilivyoufanya mwaka 2010 ni tofauti na ule nitakaokwenda kuufanya mwaka 2011.
Kuna ngoma kali ambazo nimekwisha kuzifanya, ninategemea kuziachia mapema mwakani.

AT

Makhirikhiri : Dar ilipowasusia ukumbi Land Mark Hotel Saturday, 25 December 2010 11:37

Aurelio happy to swap the Copacabana for Blackpool beach

Published 23:00 25/12/10 By Simon Mullock

Fabio Aurelio doesn't have a problem swapping the Copacabana for Blackpool this Christmas – now he's back in the Liverpool team.
The Brazilian full-back seemed to be on his way back to South America in the summer after an injury-hit season which saw his contract at Anfield expire.
But within a month, Roy Hodgson offered Aurelio a new deal – and he is hoping that 2011 will give him the opportunity to prove himself.
Liverpool travel to face Blackpool at Bloomfield Road today, but it won't be a culture shock even for a man used to the more exotic surroundings of his homeland.

Aurelio said: "I have been Blackpool before and while it is hard for me to talk about the beach because I would only compare it with the beaches back home in Brazil, I can say that my family all had a good time there.
"This is my fifth season in England so I'm used to playing at different grounds and also being away from my family at Christmas.
"Of course, it should be a time when you spend time with the people you love but playing on Boxing Day is a tradition in England and I also respect that.
"I am just pleased to be playing again. I have been training hard and it was nice to get 90 minutes against Steaua Bucharest.
"I feel fully fit again and I am just waiting for the opportunity to play because I feel I can offer more to Liverpool.
"We all have to be ready because this is a period with a lot of important games and the squad will come into use."
Aurelio added: "It was quite unexpected what happened with my contract last summer, but in the end it was a happy ending.
"I am settled in England and so are my family, so we were grateful when the opportunity to sign for Liverpool came again."
Liverpool will be looking to avenge a humiliating 2-1 defeat at Anfield at the hands of Ian Holloway's men earlier in the season.
The pressure has continued to mount on boss Hodgson – and Aurelio says it's time for the players to stand up for their manager.
"It's amazing that a small club like Blackpool can get into the Premier League, but just look at how well they are doing this season.
"They beat us at Anfield and we know that it will be a difficult game again.
"When things don't work at a club like Liverpool there is going to be criticism – and as the head of the team it is the manager who is always criticised more.
"We are all in it together, though, and we need to work together to pull the club through a difficult time.
"We should not worry about top four or anything like that. We need to look to each game and see where it takes us.
"The most important game of the season is the next one.
"If we look at it like that and get the three points every single game then in February or March we can look at the table and think differently."

Chelsea plot £10m bid for teenage wonder kid - Exclusive

Published 23:00 25/12/10 By Soriebah Kajue

Chelsea are set to enter the race for Southampton starlet Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain with a sensational £10 million bid.
The 17-year-old wonder kid has attracted interest from rival London clubs Fulham and Arsenal but Chelsea are now ready to show their hand.
Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is keen to introduce a younger English core at the heart of his team to replace the ageing and influential presences of skipper John Terry and Frank Lampard.
Frank Arnesen steps down from his role as Director of Football at the end of the season but has convinced his Russian boss that Oxlade-Chamberlain is the magician he has longed for.

The 17-year-old's searing pace and skill allows him to play equally well down either flank, or just off the front man and he has already scored five goals this term.
Carlo Ancelotti has already been able to benefit from being able to call on the advanced ability of teenager Josh McEachran, who has been one of the success stories of Chelsea's much maligned youth policy.
Nathaniel Chalobah,16, is currently starring for the reserves and is tipped to make a major impact on the first-team in 2011, alongside McEachran.
Chelsea's teenaged duo were both recently highlighted by Sir Trevor Brooking as players that could be stars for England in the World Cup in 2018.
It is this new emphasis on young English talent that so appeals to Oxlade-Chamberlain and Chelsea aim to make him the spearhead of this new generation.
Fulham had apparently led the chase for the player who became the second youngest debutant in the Saints history behind Theo Walcott, aged just 16 and 199 days.
Mark Hughes has been intent on revamping his squad with youthful energy but the Cottager's bid would appear to be hampered by the lack of players they have manufactured in recent years.

We will end 35 years of hurt, vows Mancini as he eyes January signings

Published 23:00 25/12/10 By Derick Allsop

Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini has told his players they must break through a 35-season psychological barrier to make the club a genuine force in football.
Mancini, 12 months into his job at Eastlands, is convinced he has steered City to the cusp of something special.
But he warns that winning a first trophy since 1976 is key to opening a treasure trove and they must focus totally on that elusive prize.
The Italian said: "I think our mentality will be changed when we win something. We have three opportunities – the Premier League title, the FA Cup or the Europa League.

"From that moment I believe our mentality will change. We have to start with one trophy. Then we can think of winning more trophies."
Mancini is content that his stewardship has taken City forward step by step and put them into contention with the established order of the English game.
He said: "The important thing is that we have improved a lot and stayed near the top of the table.
"We have an even greater belief than we had at the beginning of the season that is it is possible to win the title.
"That is normal when you have good results and play well. That gives you more confidence. But at the same time we must improve more."
That lesson was learned the painful way in the 2-1 home defeat to Everton last Monday, a result which compounded the angst over the Carlos Tevez affair.
The Argentine striker withdrew his transfer request and retained the captaincy yet failed to inspire a victory that would have given City the Christmas No. 1.
Mancini maintains he was unfazed by the turmoil but admits City can ill-afford to be side-tracked by personal issues.
He said: "The difficult thing was the game against Everton. A situation like Carlos or another player who has a problem is normal in football, every day, in every team, in every country.
"It was my decision that Carlos should still be captain and we put everything in a good way in one week. It was important to resolve it very quickly.
"The club must be hard, very hard. The players must think only of football. That is more important because we have started to become a strong team and don't need other situations that can distract from the football.
"We have a good team but we should improve on the situation we had against Everton. If we do this I think we can do a good job."
Mancini is expected to raid the January transfer market for another striker and has been linked with Wolfsburg's Edin Dzeko and Newcastle's Andy Carroll.
But the City boss contends he will assess his requirements after the three holiday League fixtures - beginning with today's trip to Newcastle.
"I want to see what happens in the next few days," he said. "We have three very important games and after we can decide."
One player thought likely to leave City is out-of-favour goalkeeper Shay Given, although Mancini insists the Irishman has not asked to go.

Stoke and Blackburn set to battle for Villa misfit - Exclusive

Published 23:00 25/12/10 By Ralph Ellis

Stoke are preparing to take on today's opponents Blackburn in a tug of war to sign Aston Villa's misfit midfielder Stephen Ireland.
The former Manchester City star has been told he can leave Villa Park just four months after arriving from Eastlands in an £8million deal as makeweight in the James Milner transfer.
Villa insist publicly they want to recoup that cash – but privately know they will have little chance of finding a club either to pay the fee or match Ireland's £60,000 a week wage packet.
That's when Potters boss Tony Pulis aims to do a deal that will give a way out to a player who has fallen dramatically since he won City's Player of the Year trophy in 2009.

Blackburn have also made clear their interest in Ireland, who has not moved from his lavish Cheshire home – but Stoke believe Pulis's track record for reviving the careers of talented players who have had troubles will give them an edge.
If he wants an example he need look only at centre half Robert Huth, who is on the verge of winning back a place in Germany's international squad and will appear at Blackburn today as one of only five Premier League outfield players to have appeared in every minute in every competition for their club this season
The 6ft 3ins centre half, hailed as a boy wonder when he began his career with Chelsea, won the last of 19 caps for his country during the 2006 World Cup.
And the only time he did get recalled two years ago for a friendly against Switzerland he had to pull out of the squad because of injury.
But Pulis says Huth, now 26, deserves a fresh chance. He said: "I think if Robert was playing as well as he has been doing with us for a club in the Bundesliga he would already be back in the full German squad.
"Probably if he was still at Chelsea he would have been there too. He's certainly good enough.
"I certainly think if he goes on playing as well for us as he has done then they will take notice and he'll get his chance again.
"When he does get it then he'll show he's capable of playing at the very highest level."
Stoke fans have dubbed the £5million signing from Middlesbrough "The Berlin Wall" in reference both to his birthplace and his strength both on the ground and in the air.
Pulis added: "Robert has been smashing for us, he's played right back, centre half, and he's been really on top of his game all season.
"I think he'd had problems at Middlesbrough with an ankle injury which had restricted his progress. He made his debut for Chelsea at 17 and people thought he was going to be a really big player, I think they marked him out as one who could perform at the highest level for them, but I think the problems he had with his ankle didn't help him.
"Since he came to us we've been able to manage the injury, which is a credit to my fitness staff, and it's helped him to improve and get more consistent and confident."
