Albion fell behind via the first meaningful attack of the game after four minutes.
Agbonlahor held the ball up inside the Baggies box before picking out Stewart Downing.
Meite was unable to deal with his low cross and deflected the ball past Scott Carson into the corner of the net.
Carson was then unable to cling onto a deflected shot from Villa skipper Stiliyan Petrov, but he was able to recover in time and grab the rebound before Darren Bent could take advantage.
Scharner became the first player to be booked for a challenge on Nigel Reo-Coker.
The home side threatened for the first time when Brad Friedel turned aside a curling 25-yard drive from Mulumbu at the expense of a corner.
Ashley Young seized onto a lack of control by Gonzalo Jara and cut inside, but he curled his shot past the far post.
Carlos Vela then missed a great chance to bring Albion level, the on-loan Arsenal striker latching onto Simon Cox's defence-splitting pass but failing to keep his shot down as he tried to chip Friedel.
Downing created space for himself after cutting inside but dragged his left-footed shot past the post.
The England winger then teed up the overlapping Kyle Walker, whose menacing cross was tipped over the bar by Carson.
More good play by Downing created an opening for Agbonlahor whose shot was deflected wide.
Both sides were forced into a defensive switch after 50 minutes with Jara and Dunne hobbling out of the action to be replaced by Gabriel Tamas and Ciaran Clark respectively.
Albion fans appealed optimistically for a penalty but Luke Young clearly got a touch on the ball to deflect it away from Vela and back to Friedel.
But after an hour Odemwingie brought West Brom level.
Morrison's deep free-kick was headed back across goal by Jonas Olsson and Cox and Scharner miskicked before Odemwingie lashed the ball into the roof of the net.
Two minutes later Albion were reduced to 10 men when Scharner hauled down Petrov and was sent off.
Carson parried away a curling attempt from Ashley Young as Villa looked to make the most of their numerical advantage.
Morrison blocked a fierce attempt from Agbonlahor, who was then booked after fouling Mulumbu.
Collins deflected a fiercely struck cross from Walker wide and saved a low drive from the impressive Downing.
Mulumbu was booked for bringing down Bent but then put his side in front after 84 minutes, his sixth goal of the season.
He ran onto Cox's pass and evaded Luke Young before nicking the ball past Friedel under pressure from Clark.

Man United kufuta kabisa ndoto ya ubingwa kwa Arsenal Send to a friend Saturday, 30 April 2011 10:09

LONDON, England

Former Wigan star Leighton Baines scored a late penalty to deny his old club a vital victory against Everton in a 1-1 draw at the DW Stadium.

Relegation-threatened Latics looked on course for three much-needed Premier League points as they clung onto a 21st-minute lead given to them by an excellent Charles N'Zogbia strike at the DW Stadium.
However, after Ali Al Habsi saved one Mikel Arteta spot-kick, Wigan's luck ran out as Baines struck from 12 yards on 77 minutes after a Hugo Rodallega handball.
Wigan finished strongly but Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard was outstanding in the closing minutes.
Wigan dictated the pace for most of the game and threatened in the second minute as Rodallega put James McCarthy through on goal, but Howard beat him to the ball.
Rodallega had a sight of goal moments later as he raced onto a Ben Watson pass, but the Colombian shot wide under pressure from Sylvain Distin.
Everton looked most threatening early on when Baines, sold for £6million to the Toffees four years ago, and a fit-again Arteta linked on the left.
Leon Osman also whipped in a good cross for Victor Anichebe, who controlled well with his back to goal but was unable to turn.
Yet Wigan were the more adventurous and fully deserved to go ahead. Their breakthrough came after McCarthy picked out N'Zogbia in the area with a delicate chip over the defence.
The Frenchman's control initially let him down and he then stumbled as Howard challenged, but he recovered quickly and turned to curl the ball home from a tight angle.
Despite the goal being just reward for their endeavours, Wigan perhaps began to show their anxiety as they quickly started to sit back.
Everton almost grabbed an immediate equaliser through Osman but Al Habsi palmed over a fierce shot.
Wigan invited more pressure and survived a scare when a dangerous Baines free-kick was headed behind by Maynor Figueroa for a corner.
Everton were handed a glorious chance to equalise in the 35th minute when N'Zogbia was caught out by a short Baines free-kick and tripped Osman in the corner of the area.
Despite Baines having scored the Toffees' last two penalties, Arteta took responsibility and was denied as Al Habsi saved superbly to his left.
It was a moment that re-energised the home crowd but Wigan suffered a blow shortly before the break as Mohamed Diame was forced off injured. Scotland midfielder James McArthur took his place.
N'Zogbia had a chance to add a second on the stroke of half-time when a cross dropped to him after beating Rodallega, but Howard parried his powerful drive.

Everton controlled possession in the early stages of the second half and Wigan encountered more problems when N'Zogbia limped off with a hamstring injury after 53 minutes and was replaced by Victor Moses.
Moses immediately took on N'Zogbia's creative mantle and brought two good saves out of Howard within minutes of coming on.
His first effort came after he showed persistence when Everton closed him out on the edge of the area.
The 20-year-old calmly moved away from goal and fed Emmerson Boyce, whose cross was blocked by Phil Jagielka.
Moses followed up on the rebound but Howard turned the ball away for a corner from point-blank range.
The American then palmed over another well-struck shot from Moses from just inside the area.
Wigan had a moment of alarm when Al Habsi spilled an Osman shot but the on-loan Bolton goalkeeper quickly gathered at the second attempt.
Everton tried to freshen up their side by sending on Seamus Coleman and Beckford for Arteta and Tim Cahill.
Moses wreaked more havoc when he beat Baines and cut inside Jack Rodwell to shoot but his effort was blocked.
McCarthy seized on the loose ball but was also frustrated as desperate Everton defenders twice got in the way of his shots from the edge of the area.
But Wigan were punished for another error as Rodallega needlessly handled at a corner and referee Lee Mason pointed to the spot for a second time.
This time Baines ensured there was no let-off as he blasted the ball into the roof of the net.
Wigan upped the tempo in a late effort to reclaim the lead and Everton had Howard to thank for keeping them at bay.
He saved twice from Rodallega, beat away a Watson drive and clutched an acrobatic effort from Franco di Santo.
Moses also had a chance after a goalmouth scramble in injury time but fired well over.

Arsene Wenger feels the burden of captaincy weighs heavy on Cesc Fabregas, but is in no doubt Arsenal's disappointments will make him stronger.
The Gunners are facing up to a sixth campaign without silverware, having seen their Premier League title hopes evaporate following a run of costly draws and a last-gasp defeat at Bolton.
And another loss to leaders Manchester United at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday could even jeopardise their Champions League qualification.

Just two months ago, Arsenal were fighting for honours on all four fronts, reaching the Carling Cup final before a shock defeat to Birmingham at Wembley was followed by exits from Europe and the FA Cup at the hands of Barcelona and Manchester United.
Fabregas turns 24 in early May, and while he has already tasted success with Spain at the European Championships and last summer's World Cup, the midfielder is yet to get his hands on any club honours as skipper.
Wenger installed Fabregas as his captain in November 2008, stripping William Gallas of the armband following public criticism of his young squad.
And Fabregas recently voiced his own concerns about what Arsenal are missing to convert promise into medals.
However, Wenger feels the burning desire for success and leading the team through adversity is a difficult one to balance.
"It is too much for him at his age. I believe so," Wenger said. "But he is the captain of the team and [Robin] van Persie is vice-captain, they put a lot of pressure on themselves.
"Cesc is a winner. He wants to win, he is desperate to win the games, and of course when it does not work, he is frustrated.
"It is too much because it doesn't go as well. Once it will go well, he will grow with it.
"Every difficulty in life will make you stronger, especially when you have a strong character, and Cesc is a strong character.
"I believe it will make him stronger, but maybe this season it is a bit of a heavy burden."
Wenger feels the turning point of the campaign was the final moments of the Carling Cup final, where a defensive mix-up gifted the Blues a dramatic winner.
"Victory could have given the players a little bit of playing with less weight on your shoulders," he said.
"I don't fault the attitude. I feel that this season the team could have won absolutely everything, but when things turned against us we became a bit nervous in the key moments of the games."
Despite the frustrations of this season, Wenger is determined to keep his current group intact.
"I believe that this team has been educated, grown together. The biggest achievement for them will be to win together," he said.
"They will have learnt their job the hard way. They have been criticised a lot and, at the moment, they do not get the credit they deserve. Once they win, they will be stronger."

City boss Roberto Mancini could be tempted to recall Edin Dzeko to the team. The Bosnia and Herzegovina striker, a £27million signing from Wolfsburg, scored his first Premier League goal for the club in the victory against Blackburn after stepping off the bench.
Mancini will again be without injured pair Carlos Tevez and Micah Richards (both hamstring) as well as Jerome Boateng (knee).
Scott Parker is set to miss out for West Ham. The England international is still struggling with an Achilles injury and is almost certain to miss the trip to Eastlands, according to manager Avram Grant. Parker will be joined on the sidelines by fellow midfielders Mark Noble and Gary O'Neil, who are out with hernia and ankle injuries respectively.
Wayne Bridge is ineligible to feature against his parent club, but the Hammers defence will be boosted by the return of Matthew Upson from a chest infection.
