Rwanda pip Tanzania in CAN U-17 warm up

From FINNY MUYESHI in Kigali, 19th December 2010 @ 12:00, Total Comments: 0, Hits: 125

TANZANIA'S Serengeti Boys suffered a 1-0 defeat to Rwanda as the three-nation Cecafa Under-17 football tournament kicked off at the Amahoro Stadium, Kigali on Saturday.

The Serengeti Boys were down in the 19th minute when Rwanda captain Emery Ranyisange slotted home a penalty past goalkeeper Saleh Malande.

The match could have ended on a better score line but for either missed chances or good saves from especially the Tanzanian goalkeeper.

The tournament that also includes Kenya is being used to shape up the Rwandese ahead of the African Under-17 Championships that they host from the second week of next month. It is fully sponsored by the Rwanda Ministry of Youth and Sport.

"I want to believe that as a team we have given the Rwandese good practice," said Tanzania coach Jamhuri Kihwelu.

"It was a tough match that we are unfortunate to have lost but more important is that we have accorded Rwanda a chance to assess themselves," he added.

Kihwelu has been appointed to lead the youth team in the absence of the head coach, Rodrigo Stockler, who has travelled to his native Brazil to attend his father, who is said to be in poor condition.

Rwanda tactician Richard Tardy was happy with the win but noted that he was still to get the right rhythm for the African challenge.

"We have the challenge of doing well in Africa and we can not do that if we continue wasting begging chances," he said.

Serengeti Boys are set to play Kenya today. The African finals bring together eight nations that will be divided into two groups of four each.

The groupings for the championship were revealed following the draw held on November 27 at the Lake Kivu Serena Hotel in Gisenyi, Rwanda.

Group ‘A' brings together hosts Rwanda, Burkina Faso, Senegal and Egypt, whilst reigning champions, Gambia, Congo, Cote d'Ivoire and Mali are in Group B.

The tournament will be staged from January 8 to 22 January, 2011 and matches will be played at the Amahoro National Stadium, Umuganda Stadium in Gisenyi and Stade de Kigali (Nyamirambo).

The semi-finalists will represent the continent Fifa Under-17 World Cup from June 18 June to July 10 in Mexico. Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda withdrew from the tournament.

Simba, Yanga to learn CAF fate

By DAILY NEWS Reporter, 19th December 2010 @ 12:00, Total Comments: 0, Hits: 93

ALL eyes will be on the Africa's largest city of Cairo on Monday as the draw for the 2011 edition of the Orange Champions League and the Confederation Cup takes place in Egypt, with four Tanzanian clubs set to learn their fate for preliminary rounds of the competitions.

Premier League champions, Simba and their archrivals Young Africans, who are the Mainland's flag bearers in the Champions League and Confederation Cup respectively, will get the glimpse of their continental campaigns, and where they kick off.

The Dar es Salaam giants will be keeping their fingers crossed that they avoid tough hurdles for the preliminary rounds of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) inter-clubs competitions scheduled to kick off in January, next year.

Zanzibar Ocean View and KMKM will complete the four teams hailing from the United Republic of Tanzania during the draw.

The former will be making their maiden in the continental premium football next year, whilst the compatriots are set to battle it out in the Confederation Cup.

Over 100 clubs from the 53 National Associations affiliated to CAF will be involved in the draw for the two club championships; CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederation Cup.

Simba and Yanga, boast unimpressive record in African football, hence the 2011 championships will present them with the opportunity, to try and kill their jinx at the continental stage.

Despite of their shared, unmatched dominance in local football scene, the two have struggled to duplicate their home success in the continental game. Yanga, who previously represented the country in Champions League, were sent packing by FC Lupopo of DR Congo in the preliminary round, beaten 4-2 on aggregate.

Simba, who had been given a bye in the preliminary round of the Caf Confederation Cup, saw off Lengthens of Zimbabwe in the first round, but could not make into the group stages, after losing their second round tie 6-3 (on aggregate) to Egyptians Haras El-Hadoud.

The highest level of success that Simba achieved was getting to the final of the CAF Cup in 1993, where they lost to Stella Abidjan of Ivory Coast.

It was the highest achievement on continental competitions reached by any Tanzanian team. One of the most memorable years for the club was 2003, when they knocked off the then reigning champions Egyptian giants Zamalek on their way to qualify for the group stages of the CAF Champions League.

Yanga's best achievement was reaching the group stage of CAF Champions League in 1998. The Jangwani Street outfit have won slightly more Tanzanian Premier League titles than Simba, however, it is the Msimbazi Street men who have faired much better on the continental stage than their archrivals The deadline for the registration of participation in the 2011 continental club championships was November 30.

By DAILY NEWS Reporter, 19th December 2010 @ 12:00, Total Comments: 0, Hits: 27

ELEVEN days have remained before the Zanzibar Football Association (ZFA) hold their elections for new office bearers.

And the elections surrounding the post of president and vice president is becoming a really interesting contest with six candidates putting their names forward for the posts.

ZFA spokesperson, Maulid Hamad Maulid named the three names for the president hot seat as incumbent ZFA president Ali Ferej Tamim, Suleiman Mohamed Jabir and Television Zanzibar's presenter Hafidh Kassim.

While today has been set the last date for filling applications, three candidates who have so far collected nomination forms in the post of vice president. Current ZFA vice-president Haji Ameir Haji is seeking re-election.

The post has attracted the director of Zanzibar premiership holders, Ocean View FC, Amani Ibrahim Makungu, as well.

The third candidate to throw his hat into the fray is Mlandege Sports Club planning secretary Ali Khatib Dai.

"We're expecting a tight race in the coming elections, the tension ahead of the polls is very high," said Maulid over the phone on Sunday, adding "There is possibility of changes in the office as some football stakeholders are uncomfortable with the current regime."

Maulid said the applications will be scrutinized on Saturday ahead of the elections to be held in Gombani Pemba, on December 31.

Tamim has been in power for more than two decades. He has reportedly sought re-election as he believes he is still the one capable of doing the job and who can fulfill the task on hand.

Both Makungu and Kassim have joined the race for ZFA slots, seeking to change the image of the Isles' football governing body.

Makungu said recently that Zanzibar needs leaders with vision and committed to promote football development in the isles.

Dar es Salaam women cricketers lose to Zimbabwe

From a Correspondent in Nairobi, 19th December 2010 @ 12:00, Total Comments: 0, Hits: 29

LACK of confidence among women's national cricket team resulted to the defeat of the Tanzanian team to Zimbabwe on Saturday.

Tanzania lost their must-win match to Zimbabwe to miss out on next year's ICC Women World Cup global final in Bangladesh.

An experienced fast bowler, Hawa Said said here that an early dismal of batsman Said Khamis during the match saw some players despair.

"Some players among ourselves do not believe in our own performances, despite to the fact that Khamis is one of the key-holders of the team's success, we were supposed to stand out as a team", said Said, whose brilliant performance enabled her to become among top bowlers with 12 wickets.

Khamis is one of the key players who enabled Tanzania in the winning of the African championship in 2006.

She was the key for the Tanzania's first win over Uganda in the ended Nairobi qualifiers after scoring 65 runs before the Ugandans dismissed her with three overs to go to the end.

Zena Hassan, an upcoming young bowler with six wickets in the recently ended Women's World Cup Qualifiers for Africa region, also shared the same sentiments.

Hassan, who also steered for the country's triumph in the U-19 East African tournament held in Dar es Salaam a month ago said that the team had a high morale winning against Zimbabwe but an early dismal of the senior key players demoralized the whole team.

"We started the match on a sound note, but minor mistakes on batting and bowling cost us dearly, otherwise, we had good chances to win.

Tanzania, which lost twice, was required to win the match in order to qualify for the Bangladesh series but locked itself out of the crucial qualifiers alongside Uganda after the defeat.

Tanzania tossed to field as the Zimbabweans hit 165 runs in the 50-alloted overs with eight wickets down. But Zimbabweans dismissed their three crucial wickets of team captain Aneth Banali, Saida Khamis and Monica Pascal barely 20 minutes after the second inning.

Aneth Banali, national team captain said poor refereeing was one the reasons behind their defeat.

"I was totally disappointed when the referees counted that I was hit by the ball to serve a wicket for the Zimbabwean, while in a real sense, the ball had not hit me", said Banali.

South Africa and Zimbabwe managed to sail through to the next level of the qualifiers in Bangladesh.

The Bangladesh qualifiers will attract two teams from every continent to scramble for another qualification for the 2013 World Cup finals.

South Africa beat Zimbabwe in the formality final match. The two teams had secured a ticket for next year's global final to take place in Bangladesh while Uganda beat Kenya in the third place play off. The Tanzanian cricketers return home on Monday.

Tevez needs your support - Mancini's call to City fans

Published 23:00 19/12/10 By David McDonnell

Roberto Mancini has urged Manchester City fans to lay off Carlos Tevez tonight as they chase top spot in the Premier League.
City can go top of the table at Christmas for the first time since 1929 if they beat Everton at Eastlands.
And Mancini has pleaded with their fans to back want-away striker Tevez - despite him demanding to leave.
Mancini will strip Tevez of the captaincy, handing the skipper's armband to Vincent Kompany, while the City striker's future remains unresolved following his bombshell demand.

Although Tevez insisted he wants to move when the transfer window re-opens next month, City remain adamant they will not consider selling the £50million-rated forward until the end of the season.
The Argentine star has yet to respond to Mancini's insistence that he should remain at the club until then.
And although Tevez can expect a hostile reception from some sections of the Eastlands crowd, Mancini believes his leading scorer will give 100 per cent and has called on City's fans to back him.
"It's important that we are focused on Everton and the supporters are focused too," said Mancini. "We should forget this [Tevez] because we must focus on the game.
"Everton beat us twice last year - it will be a difficult game and a tricky one."
Defender Micah Richards added: "I'm sure Carlos will be in the starting eleven.
"We need him in our team if we want to achieve what we want to achieve. He's our main man and our captain."
Chelsea have no interest in signing Tevez, despite the striker's determination to leave, while Manchester United have no desire to take back their former striker.

City v Everton is ON!

Manchester City will get their chance to go top of the Premier League at Christmas for the first time ever after their game against Everton tonight was given the go-ahead.
Despite temperatures of -5 in the city - expected to drop to -11 by kick-off - only a heavy snowfall would prevent the North-West battle going ahead.
And forecasters predict no more snow for the area until later this week.
City have yet to confirm who their captain will be against Everton, but Vincent Kompany is expected to wear the armband after Carlos Tevez's rejected transfer request.

The game will be only the third Premier League fixture of the weekend to go ahead after England was gripped by record low temperatures and heavy snowfall.

Pienaar urges big Everton buys

Published 13:18 20/12/10 By MirrorFootball

Everton midfielder Steven Pienaar hopes the club will be able to make a greater investment in players to enable them challenge for a place in the Barclays Premier League top four.
David Moyes' side are currently 15th in the table after a run of seven matches without a victory, having won just three times all season.
The Toffees have finished in the top 10 six times in the last eight seasons but only once - in 2005 - did they make it into the top four.
Moyes has never had as much to spend on his squad as many of his top-flight rivals but Pienaar hopes that will be able to change in the future.

"I think the quality is here at the club," said the 28-year-old.
"The only problem, like everyone seems to know, is the money issue - we need more players.
"Hopefully that will change in the next few years and the team can go on to challenge."
As a result of their recent struggles there has been some speculation about the future of Moyes and whether his time at Goodison Park, approaching nine years, had run its course.
However, Pienaar - whose own future at the club is less certain as he has yet to sign an extension to his contract which expires in the summer - believes the Scot can go on to achieve greater things in management.
"I think he's a workaholic, he works around the clock, and I think he deserves the two [manager of the year] awards he got," he told fifa.com.
"I think there is a lot more he will achieve and I think he will become one of the best managers in the world - I've never seen a coach work as hard as him."
On his own situation Pienaar said: "I've not enjoyed my football more than this before."

Agent: Rafa not sacked yet

Rafael Benitez's agent claims the Inter Milan coach is unfazed by growing speculation in Italy that he will be out of a job before the Serie A season resumes in January.
Benitez has come under pressure after demanding that the club either back him in the transfer market next month or sack him.
The 50-year-old Spaniard's outburst came shortly after he led Inter to a 3-0 triumph over Congolese side Mazembe in the FIFA Club World Cup final in Abu Dhabi on Saturday.
While the Italian media think Benitez's ultimatum to club president Massimo Moratti may have backfired, with Gazzetta dello Sport reporting Moratti has decided to dismiss the Spaniard, his agent insists nothing has changed.

Manuel Garcia Quilon said: "Benitez is under contract with Inter and the situation is the same as it was before.
"Benitez said what he said and he does not need to explain himself further.
"I have not been contacted by anyone."
Reports in Italy have strongly linked former Roma coach Luciano Spalletti, now at Zenit St Petersburg, with a return to Italy as the number one candidate to replace Benitez.
The former Liverpool manager has endured a difficult start at Inter since replacing Jose Mourinho in the summer.
Inter have been decimated by injuries this season and Benitez expects reinforcements to arrive next month.
The Nerazzurri are 13 points adrift of city rivals AC Milan in the Serie A title hunt, albeit having played two games fewer than the Rossoneri.
They now have a winter break and next take to the field against Napoli on January 6.
Earlier, Benitez received backing from Renzo Ulivieri, the head of the Italian Coaches' Association, who believes the Inter boss is right in asking for backing from the club.
"Benitez has always been calm and civil," Ulivieri told La Repubblica.
"He has my support but he doesn't need it because he can stand on his own two feet. He is a world club champion.
"If he asks for respect it's because obviously he has been lacking it.
"He has only asked for normal things."
Benitez has come under fire recently with Inter lying seventh in Serie A a season after claiming the Scudetto, Coppa Italia and Champions League crowns under Mourinho.
Moratti refused to answer questions regarding Benitez's future today.
He said on the club's official website, F.C. Internazionale Milano - Sito Ufficiale "I will not speak today.
"I do not wish to create any controversies with anyone."

Liverpool Boxing Day trip to Blackpool could be off

Liverpool could have a second consecutive match postponed by the weather after Blackpool admitted they fear their Boxing Day clash with the Anfield giants may be called off.
The Premier League newcomers do not have undersoil heating and have already had two matches postponed because of adverse weather - last Saturday's scheduled visit of Tottenham and the Manchester United game earlier this month.
Blackpool are currently in discussions with the Premier League about procedures ahead of Sunday's match.
"We can almost certainly guarantee the pitch will be playable but it is the prevailing conditions once the covers have been removed and whether the pitch will freeze before the end of the game taking place," chairman Karl Oyston told Sky Sports News.

"That is one we are talking to the Premier League about to see what their standpoint and inspection protocol will be."
Liverpool's home game against Fulham was postponed on Saturday because of the heavy snow which fell in the North West.

Becks: I'd only return to England with United

Published 12:10 20/12/10 By MirrorFootball

David Beckham wants to play for a European club this winter in a bid to win back his England place, the midfielder has revealed.
Beckham has spent the last two winters on loan from Los Angeles Galaxy at AC Milan but accepts that move will not happen again - and he has ruled out all Premier League clubs apart from Manchester United.
The 35-year-old, who last night received the BBC sports personality's lifetime achievement award, said: "I won't be going back to AC Milan this time because is not possible to go onto the roster for such a short length of time.
"But I will be going back somewhere as I want to keep myself fit and keep myself in with a chance of getting called up for England again. To do that, I have to be somewhere so fingers crossed I can sort something out."

Beckham, whose Major League Soccer season with the Galaxy does not begin again until March, has trained with Arsenal in the past to regain his fitness but he will resist offers to play for any other Premier League club apart from United, and he concedes the chances of that are remote.
He added: "I have always missed playing in the Premier League since I left it almost eight years ago.
"It is a great league and one of the most competitive in the world. Maybe one day I will come back here but I have always said that it will only be for Manchester United. I am not holding my breath on that one, but we will have to wait and see.
"But definitely not Preston [where he played on loan as a teenager] - it's too cold up there!"
Beckham has not played for England since suffering a torn Achilles tendon in March that kept him out of the World Cup, but he made a successful return for the Galaxy.
"My body feels great after my injury," Beckham said. "I always said I needed to get that back into order and keep my fitness and we will see."
Beckham was teary-eyed after receiving a standing ovation that lasted more than two minutes from the great and the good of British sport at the BBC awards last night - and he admitted to being dumbfounded at the depth of feeling towards him.
"That was one of the best reactions I have had from an audience and I have to thank them because it was incredible," he said.
"I had to try to hold back the tears because I could see my wife getting emotional and my mum bawling as usual. My children were sat there, too, and it tipped me over the edge.
"One of the things I said I was going to say and then forgot was that receiving a lifetime achievement award is something you normally get at the end of a career.
"I still feel that I am starting a new chapter, to be honest. I still feel that I am playing well and playing on and can still do it. I have not finished yet.
"I wake up every day and want to achieve something. I have to be a good role model for my children and other children out there.
"I love the game and am not done with playing the game yet. I might be 35 years old but I still feel that I can play at the top level for another couple of years. Hopefully, I can do that."

Kuyt: Good Xmas will lift us to top four

Liverpool forward Dirk Kuyt is confident the Merseysiders can make a significant move towards the top four over the festive period.
The Reds' four matches in 11 days see them host Wolves and Bolton and travel to Blackpool and Blackburn.
And although they are currently nine points adrift of fourth-placed Chelsea Kuyt believes a healthy return of points will close the gap.
"This period is one of the most important of the season," said the Holland international.

"If we can produce a good run I'm sure we will be up near the top four.
"I'm sure a lot of the top teams will drop some points this month. If we could get four good results in a row, then who knows? Certainly the gap will be closer."
The Dutchman is one of the squad's hardest-working players and so several matches in quick succession hold no problems for him.
"December is always a special month in the Premier League and one I always look forward to," he told the Liverpool Echo.
"It's hard work with four games in 10 days but that's what you want.
"I love to play games and always want to play as many as I can.
"Hopefully at the beginning of the new year we can look back and say it was a great time for us and we climbed the table."

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson says he has shelved all thoughts of retirement.
Ferguson yesterday became the longest-serving manager in United's history and on New Year's Day will celebrate his 69th birthday.
It is almost nine years since he famously reversed a long-standing plan to quit.
Yet the fire still burns fiercely in the Scot's soul and with his team now favourites to secure a record 19th league championship this season and having completed a smooth passage to the last 16 of the Champions League, Ferguson insists thoughts of walking away have long since been banished.

"The older you get the more worried you are about retiring," he told MUTV.
"You start to realise that whilst you have got your health and good fitness, you should carry on in your job. All thoughts of retirement are in the back of my mind.
"It (saying he was going to go) was a mistake. At the time there were some reasons for it. It was one of those things."
Ferguson's record includes 11 titles and two Champions League triumphs, pushing him right to the forefront as one of Britain's most successful managers.
He still has reservations about some decisions though, even when he gets them right.
Most recently it was dumping Dimitar Berbatov on the bench for last week's win over Arsenal.
It was a very brave move considering the Bulgarian became only the fourth player to score five in a Premier League match during the previous outing against Blackburn.
Ferguson's move was justified by the 1-0 win that took United top of the table. But telling Berbatov was not very easy.
"Management is about making decisions," he said.
"Sometimes they are positive and good. Sometimes you feel you have made the wrong decision and should have attacked it a different way.
"Picking teams for instance. We made the decision the other night to leave Berbatov out of the team. It was not an easy one and was very difficult to explain.
"The only way I could do that was by saying I felt it was going to win us the match. Although it was proved right you are never sure."
