"Tulifanya Afrika nzima kujisikia fahari," alisema Katumbi.

  • Congo's Selenge, who scored the winner for ‘Ingwe' against ‘K'Ogalo' last season, said to have moved

Gor Mahia say they have raided rival club AFC Leopards and made away with Congolese forward Dimonde Selenge.

K'Ogalo, who started the tour of Nyanza Province on Tuesday, say they have added the dread locked striker to last season's runner up top scorer Ezekiel Odera who signed up from Kenya Commercial Bank and Nairobi City Stars veteran midfielder Dennis "Wise" Okoth.

Selenge is remembered for breaking the hearts of Gor Mahia fans on May 29 last season when his rifling strike silenced K'Ogalo as Ingwe won 1-0 in their Kenyan Premier League first leg match at the Nyayo National Stadium.

Not aware of move

According to the club's website www.gormahia.co.ke the three have already put pen on paper to the deals. But on Tuesday, Leopards' chairman Julius Ochiel denied knowledge of Selenge's move.

"I'm not aware that he has moved, but players have freedom to move.

"I'm yet to meet the player to confirm the change of allegiance," Ochiel said on Tuesday.

Gor are still shopping for a defender. "We are busy strengthening our squad. We hope to get at least one or two more players, preferably defenders in our tour of Nyanza," said club secretary Nick Arum.

Gor have, however, failed in its bid to sign Tusker's Paul Were who will remain at the Ruaraka based club at least for the next six months as he awaits to leave for Sweden for greener pastures.

Fisa Academy, who own Were's contract, told the Daily Nation that a top Swedish club has shown interest in the player hence the decision not to enter into talks with other local clubs.

"We have seen it necessary for Were to continue his development at Tusker for consistency because he will be leaving for Sweden in June," said Fisa Academy director Maurice Owuor.

Meanwhile, former KPL Champions Sofapaka have released several players as the club reshapes for the new season. The team has confirmed the release of midfielders Nicholas Muyoti who is rejoining AFC Leopards, Kevin Ochieng who was signed from Mathare United, Evans Wandera and Abdi Simba who joined the club from Bandari.

Zimbabwean winger Tafadzwa Dondo who was acquired AFC Leopards in 2009 is also out of the club.

Also leaving the club is striker Allan Wanga who is already in Vietnam where he has signed for Hoang Anh Gia Lai FC (HAGL).

AFC transfer woes

Updated 12 hr(s) 13 min(s) ago

By Gilbert Wandera
Congolese Demonde Selenge admits he is unhappy at AFC Leopards and is considering a move before the transfer window closes next month.
Selenge, who was widely reported to have joined archrivals Gor Mahia has, however, denied signing for the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) runners-up whom he revealed have approached him.
"It is true that Gor officials have approached me but nothing has come of it yet. I have also not signed an extension to my contract at Leopards because we are still talking. I am, however, not happy with Leopards for sitting on my move to Yanga of Tanzania and have not made my mind to commit my future at the club.
"Yanga had agreed to sign me but they (Leopards) scuttled my chance by refusing to release me. It was a good contract and I am disappointed," he said.
Elsewhere, AFC Leopards midfielder James Orundu has found himself in the middle of a signing row pitting his owners JMJ Academy against KPL side Sofapaka.
The Academy has taken issue with reports that the midfielder had signed for the former KPL champions without their consent.
New season
Orundu was last week reported to be one of the five players signed by Sofapaka ahead of the new season but this has not gone down well with JMJ who insist that it was not done the right way.
JMJ chairman Jean-Marie Abeels said Sofapaka should have consulted them since they own the player who alongside eight others had been loaned to Leopards last season.
"We have a three-year contract with the player and he was supposed to come back to us after the loan with Leopards lapses. I am surprised by reports that he has signed for Sofapaka because obviously we were not consulted," he said.
Abeels has threatened to take up the matter with Football Kenya to prevent the player from turning up for Sofapaka if the right channel is not followed.
"We have spent a lot of money developing the player and he cannot just go for nothing. We are demanding that anybody who wants to sign him must talk to us and if we agree then he can move," added Abeels.
But Sofapaka President Elly Kalekwa while admitting that they intend to sign the player said they have followed the right channel after the player availed to them a copy of a contract he has with Leopards that expires tomorrow.
Contract expires
"We have a pre-contract with Orundo and this will be actualised on Sunday two days after his contract expires. I have also talked to Leopards officials who insist he is their player and is free to go so long as we pay them the mandatory Sh5,000 required by KPL," Kalekwa said.
Kalekwa, however, said he was ready to talk to JMJ over the player and find an amicable solution. We have no problem at all. We are impressed by the player and will be willing to discuss the matter with them for an amicable solution. But our position is that the right channel was followed in the matter," Kalekwa said.

Police stop AFC faction

Attempts by a faction of Premier League side AFC Leopards to hold the club's Annual General Meeting (AGM) at Nairobi's Nyayo National Stadium failed Tuesday after the group was prevented from accessing the venue by armed policemen and stadium management officials.
The faction, led by Secretary-General Robert Asembo and former chairman, Alex Ole Magelo, was also to hold the meeting at Nyayo National Stadium, during which the club's national elections were to be held.
The faction also urged Mumias Sugar Company not to enter into a sponsorship deal with an office that is in tatters (referring to the faction led by AFC Chairman Julius Ochiel).
A group of club supporters that turned up for the elections was also barred from entering the Nyayo Stadium by officials from the stadium management board and the police.
"We have been barred from accessing the stadium because of a court order to stop the AGM," Magelo told a large group of fans who turned up for the meeting.
AFC interim board
The crowd and officials then peacefully proceeded to a point along Lang'ata Road, where they appointed an interim board of 16 members charged with running club activities till the when the elections are held.
"The board has been granted powers to select a new technical bench and players with immediate effect. They are also to run the club affairs," said Ole Magelo.
The interim board, headed by Ole Magelo as chairman, include Asembo, Duncan Angode, Timothy Lirumbi, Walji Amin, Carol Andisi, Jayne Mulanda, Antony Walela and Patrick Ngaira. Others are Fred Lutta, Hussein Babu, Morris Amawa, Tony Kweya, Nassur Abdul, Rodgers Mutemi and Peter Lisamula.
The faction said it would hold an all-inclusive election before the end of this month immediately the court injunction is lifted.
The group said it would go to the court today to seek the lifting of the court injunction.
"We are all set. We have the names of people vying for positions and everyone is encouraged to apply. We will only take 30 minutes to conclude the elections immediately the court order is lifted," said Ole Magelo, who is seeking to reclaim the position of club chairman he held last year.
Ole Magelo was upbeat, saying he would win the chairmanship with big margin. Concerning his suspension as club's secretary general, Asembo said he is yet to be served with documents showing that he had been suspended.
Asembo advised the rival faction, headed by club chairman Julius Ochiel, to stop settling disputes in court. He reiterated the elections are open to those interested, insisting there would be no club AGM on January 9 as has been stated by Ochiel.
When contacted, Ochiel dismissed the claims, saying the group was wasting time by forming the interim board. Ochiel insisted the club's rules and the constitution must be followed to the letter.
"We have a governing council meeting on December 30 and from there, more light will be shed on the forthcoming elections," said Ochiel on phone.

Kenya wore the coveted crown

In a year when there was little to do for the track and field athletes as regards national team assignments, many opted to utilise the chance to fully exploit their talent and skills running individual races.

2010 is the year Samuel Wanjiru retained the World Marathon Majors title to enter his name in the history books as the first athlete to successfully defend the crown. Since Robert "Mwafrika" Cheruiyot won the inaugural crown in 2007 no other athletes had hit a double in the Sh40 million race.

After Cheruiyot another Kenyan, Martin Lel, won in 2008. This confirms the domination of Kenyan athletes in marathon, where they have claimed the top 83 races in the top 100 in the world in 2010.

The season started on a losing streak as Kenya failed to clinch a gold medal at the World Indoor Championship in Doha, Qatar. With a team of eight, Kenya could only get two silver – through Vivian Cheuiyot in the 5,000 metres race and Nancy Jebet Lagat in the four laps.

Haron Keitany got bronze in 1,500m, just like Paul Kipsiele Koech in the 3,000m steeplechase.

Picked all the medals on offer

But that quickly changed at the World Cross Country Championship in Bydgoszcz, Poland, where, for the first time, Kenya picked all the medals on offer save for two bronze that went to Ethiopia.

Such a feat was last achieved in 1994 in Budapest, Hungary, the season Paul Tergat bagged his first victory over the 12km senior men's distance.

Mercy Cherono, Eunice Chebet, Caleb Mwangangi and Joseph Ebuye all won gold in the four different races while Kenya claimed all the team titles.

But while the trio has made history miles away from home, Kenya went on to cement its name in the history books when it hosted the Africa Athletics Championship in Nairobi in July where the home team sat atop the rivalry over long distance running against Ethiopians.

First sub-1:43 on African soil

Kenya emerged triumphant with the highest medal haul, sweeping all gold in the men's 400m race to 10,000m while the women only lost the 10,000m race – to Ethiopia's only winner, Tirunesh Dibaba.

At the championship, David Rudisha retained the 800m title with the first sub-1:43 time on African soil when he clocked 1 minute 42.84 seconds in leading a Kenyan sweep of the podium as Alfred Kirwa and Jackson Kivuva took silver and bronze, respectively.

Rudisha then went on a 14-race unbeaten streak, winning any event he entered. The climax of his victory was, however, two-fold: He exhibited consistence and won six out of the seven IAAF Diamond League races to become the World No.1 in the two-lap race.

Broke 13-year-old world record

In Brussels, Kenya scooped seven of the 32 titles on offer. Other winners were Janeth Jepkosgei in the women's 800m, Nancy Jebet Lagat and Asbel Kiprop (1,500m), Milcah Chemos and Paul Kipsiele Koech (3,000m steeplechase) and Vivian Cheruiyot (5,000m).

Prior to Brussels, Rudisha would break a 13-year-old 1:41.11 world record, set by Kenyan-turned-Dane Wilson Kipketer in Cologne in 1997.

Having been the only athlete to have consistently run under the 1:43 mark in 2010, Rudisha stopped the clock at 1:41.09 at Berlin Olympic Stadium, shaving two-hundredth of a second off the original mark.

Ironically, it was here that in 2009 he finished third and outside the qualifying time for the World Championship finals. He would only five days later seal his IAAF Diamond League crown and then break his record in Rieti, Italy, in 1:41.01.

"Now the target is to run under the 1:41 mark," said Rudisha. "My target was to run under 1:42 when I set the fourth fastest time in the world in Rieti in 2009 when I clocked 1:42.01. But failure to go under the 1:41 mark will be a disappointment."

Cech backs Carlo to get it right

Updated Dec 29, 2010 5:17 PM ET
Petr Cech is positive Carlo Ancelotti can cope with the pressure he is experiencing and restart Chelsea's Premier League title challenge.
Ancelotti has presided over the club's worst run since 1998 - the Blues have taken just six points from eight games - and although it is understood his Chelsea future is under no immediate threat, Roman Abramovich's patience is not without limit.
However, Cech believes Ancelotti is taking the pressure in his stride as he prepares the team for Wednesday night's clash with Bolton at Stamford Bridge.

"You have to ask him (how Ancelotti coping), but I think he's coping well. He's got lots of experience," Cech said.
"There was a lot of pressure when he was manager of AC Milan.
"Last season there was a period where there was a lot of pressure here and yet we turned things round and won the double. We will try to do the same thing."
Chelsea lost further ground in the title race with Monday night's 3-1 defeat at Arsenal in a performance that underlined their lack of confidence.
At this rate they will struggle to qualify for the Champions League, but Cech refuses to rule them out of the title race.
"We can't find the same rhythm and are making wrong choices so you can see that we are making lots of wrong passes," he added.
"Every time we attack we are offside and are making mistakes too in the defensive third.
"This is exactly the reason why we are not winning games.
"The results have been bad over the last month and we have found ourselves in a circle.
"We made a mistake, we get punished and we don't score goals.
"This is the kind of period that sometimes you get in sport and it's up to us to overcome it.
"We will try to find a solution and keep working.
"We are not throwing the towel in yet because we know everything can change fast.
"But we know as well that if we keep going like this then we will have a bigger disappointment in terms of chasing the title.
"The gap has started to open now and we get the points tonight and kick on the season from there.
"We just need to have one game where you get a bit of luck to win a game and suddenly everything changes.
"But we've not had that luck for quite a time and we've been unlucky.
"But we didn't deserve the result at Arsenal and so we need to make sure we play better next tim

Sir Alex: Bowyer should have walked

Sir Alex Ferguson felt Birmingham goal hero Lee Bowyer shouldn't have been on the pitch to score against Manchester United on Tuesday.
United boss Ferguson says Bowyer deserved a red card for his first-half challenge on Darron Gibson during the 1-1 draw at St Andrews.
Bowyer received a yellow card from referee Lee Mason after a late lunge at Gibson, who was starting his first Premier League game since April.

Ferguson felt Bowyer, who is 34 next week, should have been given his marching orders and he took advantage of staying on the pitch by scoring a last gasp equaliser.
The United chief fumed: "The Bowyer tackle in the first half, I thought it was a red card. He's gone over the top of the ball.
"Bowyer has been given a yellow card so nothing can be done about it (retrospectively). But it's a dangerous tackle."
Ferguson's anger was also not helped when replays suggested Blues striker Nikola Zigic had been guilty of handball and committing a foul in the build-up to Bowyer's point-saving goal.
But in the cold light of day he can reflect with satisfaction on United heading into the New Year on top of the table.
They have lost only two league matches during 2010 and remain unbeaten in the top flight during the current campaign.
Ferguson said: "I always say if we get to that top position on New Year's Day, then we've always got a great chance.
"There's five or six teams who are all contesting that area towards the top of the league."

With Wayne Rooney still without a club goal from open play in nine months, Ferguson will be relieved Dimitar Berbatov continues to sparkle.
His 15th goal of the campaign at St. Andrew's means he has already passed his totals of 12 and 14 for his previous two campaigns at Old Trafford.
Ferguson said: "Dimitar is in great form and it is good to see that. His confidence is high too - and that is important."
Ferguson will hope that Arsenal will find it as difficult as the other leading teams when they visit Birmingham on Saturday.
Alex McLeish's side have already beaten Chelsea and drawn with Tottenham at home this season in addition to gaining the point against United which moved them out of the bottom three.
Ferguson said: "Maybe it will be seen as a good point in the long run. Absolutely. Birmingham is a very difficult place to come to.
"You see their home record in terms of goals against them. Very few teams score goals at Birmingham.
"That has been going on since Alex (McLeish) came here as a manager. They set their stall out very well."
McLeish is constantly full of praise for the resilience shown by his team and their never-say-die attitude surfaced once again in thwarting United.
But the former Scotland boss is also aware of the need for his team to start being more clinical in front of goal if they are to climb away from the relegation zone.
He said: "Why are we near the bottom? We haven't scored enough goals. That is the bottom line.
"We've not been battered in any game this season and the players can be proud of that.
"I heard David Moyes talking the other day about the reason Everton are in their position they are because they haven't scored enough goals.
"We haven't done that either. The thing which has let us down is we've not scored enough goals.
"It will take us up the table if we score the chances we create."
McLeish believes United and Arsenal are the current favourites to win the title.
He said: "I don't see any reason why it shouldn't be United. Chelsea are still a wee bit away now.
"United and Arsenal are favourites now but we say that at different stages of the season and then a couple of results go against you and it changes.
"It has been such a topsy turvy season. It has been a strange one, teams in the lower half beating the top teams.
"Even the top teams have been a little inconsistent but United's recent form has been great."

Dzeko edges closer to Man City move

Updated Dec 29, 2010 8:22 AM ET
Bosnia striker Edin Dzeko is set for a £34million move to Manchester City from Wolfsburg, according to reports in Germany.
Dzeko is set to break the Bundesliga transfer record by joining City for a fee in the region of 40million euros, according to reports in Germany.
The Bosnian striker has made no secret of his desire to leave the German side for a bigger club and, while his dream has always been to join AC Milan, the fact the Italians have just signed Antonio Cassano from Sampdoria reduces the chances of that move coming off.

TRANSFER SPECIAL

However, City have the ambition to become one of Europe's top clubs and they also have the financial backing, and a transfer of Dzeko next month is looking more likely.
Coach Roberto Mancini has also confirmed that he is a fan of the 24-year-old.
The Wolfsburger Allgemeine newspaper quotes Mancini saying: "We have the chance to win the league this year and the decisive factor could be Edin Dzeko.
"This player can decide titles and that is why we want him."
Wolfsburg's managing director Dieter Hoeness declared last week that his club is preparing to make major changes to the playing personnel after a disappointing first half of the season.
Selling a player of Dzeko's talent may not be his preference, but the player's malaise at the 2009 Bundesliga champions, who currently seem unlikely to provide him with the chance to play in the Champions League next season, may be one of the reasons the team has not been functioning since Steve McClaren took over as coach in the summer.
A fee of 40million euros, which the Wolfsburger Allgemeine reports would be made up of an initial fee of 30million euros with five million to follow in the case of City qualifying for the Champions League, while five million euros would go on signing-on and agent fees, would break the Bundesliga's transfer record.
Bayern Munich currently hold that with their 30million euros outlay on Mario Gomez from Stuttgart in 2009.
Diego's sale from Werder Bremen to Juventus last year is the most expensive foreign sale to date at 27 million euros, while he returned to the Bundesliga last summer, joining Wolfsburg for a cut-price fee of 15.5million.
And the Wolves are set to make a huge profit on a player they signed for just four million from FK Teplice in 2007.
He won the Bundesliga golden boot award last season after coming runner-up to his team mate Grafite in Wolfsburg's championship-winning year.
He has already found the back of the net 10 times this season, taking his overall tally to 66 in 111 games for the Wolves.

Beck confident of making Europe

Hoffenheim captain Andreas Beck believes his side will be playing in Europe next season - whether that be via league or cup success.
The Baden-Wurttemberg outfit ended the first half of the season in eighth position, just four points adrift of fifth-placed Bayern Munich.
Beck believes his side have let slip more than just four points along the way this season and that the aim must now be to make up for them in the second half of the campaign to qualify for Europe for the first time in the club's history.

"We played a pretty decent first half of the season, but we don't have enough points to show for it when I think of our games with Dortmund, Wolfsburg and against Nurnberg and Bayern," he told Kicker magazine.
"Nevertheless, our position is good and it now depends on how we deal with it.
"We are within touching distance of the top and have a safe distance below us.
"We could make it into Europe because we are aware of our strengths, but everything has got to come together."
Should Hoffenheim collapse like they did in their first Bundesliga season, which they led at the midway stage of the campaign only to finish eighth, they would still have the DFB-Pokal as a potential route into Europe.
They have been drawn against second division side Energie Cottbus in the quarter-finals.
"Without a doubt it is the quickest route into Europe," added Beck.
"We just need two more wins and we are already in (the final in) Berlin. However, we must not under-estimate Cottbus.
"They showed what they are capable of against Wolfsburg, but our aim has got to be to reach the semi-finals for the first time."
And the more matches Beck gets to play, the more chances he has of convincing Germany coach Joachim Low that he deserves a recall to the national team.
"That was always my dream and my goal," he said. "It would certainly be helpful if Hoffenheim were playing in Europe.
"Qualifying for Europe would give me another big boost."

Leverkusen: United scouted Adler

Bayer Leverkusen executive Wolfgang Holzhauser claims Manchester United have scouted Germany international goalkeeper Rene Adler.
United are understood to be tracking shot-stoppers around Europe as they prepare for the expected retirement of Edwin van der Sar at the end of the season.

TRANSFER SPECIAL

Keep up with all the biggest moves around the globe with our 2011 January transfer gallery.

New signing Anders Lindegaard has started training with the Old Trafford club and will be officially registered in January, but boss Sir Alex Ferguson is reported to still want an experienced number one.
United have been linked with an audacious move to sign Liverpool's Jose Reina, but Holzhauser thinks that 25-year-old Adler, a former first-choice for Germany, is also on the Premier League club's list of possible signings.
Holzhauser told Bild when asked about interest from United: "That's true. He has even been scouted."
However, the Leverkusen executive is optimistic that Adler will sign a new contract at the BayArena.
"We know there are people on their way, but we are relaxed," he said.
"We have been talking to Rene about a new deal. We want to sign a new contract with him in the next few months."

Wenger wants to build on win

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger knows his side's win over Chelsea will count for nothing unless they build on it with wins over the likes of Wigan.
The Gunners finally ended their hoodoo against the Blues with a 3-1 triumph at Emirates Stadium which boosted their Premier League challenge and casted Carlo Ancelotti's out-of-form side well adrift.

There is, though, little time for Arsenal to revel in a first win over Chelsea in six attempts as they head up to the DW Stadium, where they will be without captain Cesc Fabregas after he collected a fifth booking.
With the Gunners three points behind leaders Manchester United, Wenger knows there can be no margin of error.
"The win over Chelsea keeps us in touch with the top teams, and also what is very important as well is that it can strengthen the belief we will have our say in this championship," said Wenger.
"The most consistent team will make it in the end, and that is what is at stake.
"Let's see if we can turn up with a fantastic performance now on Wednesday night."
Wenger had indicated he was set to make changes at Wigan in addition to the enforced absence of Fabregas.
Andrey Arshavin was left warming the bench on Monday night, and so could come back into the XI, while Abou Diaby - fit from an ankle problem - is expected to deputise for Fabregas and striker Marouane Chamakh may also start.
Theo Walcott could perhaps consider himself unlucky were he to be among the substitutes after an impressive display against Chelsea, capped by a ninth goal from 16 appearances.
"It was nice to get in the starting line-up and show the boss what I can do. Hopefully I can stay there now. I just have to play well when I can," said Walcott, who was sidelined for several weeks after suffering an ankle injury when away with England during September.
"I know it's going to be a tough period, there's going to be chops and changes, I know that because it's very busy.
"There's a lot of games, you don't want to put too much work on yourself.
"So I'm sure there will be a lot of changes on Wednesday but I feel fit, I'm ready to go."
