God

Yes we have faith... but placing it wholesale on a bush healer’s beyond being gullible

By JENERALI ULIMWENGU

The herd mentality is once again on display in Tanzania, raising questions as to the sanity of a society that is so easily swayed by hearsay.

This time round, the hullabaloo is about a “retired priest” in the wilderness of Loliondo, Arusha region, claiming to have had a revelation from God, commanding him to heal hitherto intractable diseases such as diabetes and HIV/Aids.

There are reports of endless queues of thousands of people from near and far, including from outside Tanzania, to get this mystical cure that has confounded knowledgeable commentators.

The mysticism surrounding the healer has added to the intrigue.

He apparently insists that one cannot really be healed if one is not sufficiently infused with faith, so that to be cured you must not only take his potion, you must also have faith in God or something.

Also, for the medicine to work, it has to be administered physically by the prophet himself, using the same cup from which every patient drinks.

In other words, no “Do It Yourself” drinking here.

Though this is a rather recent development, the “medicine” man has taken Arusha by storm, and stories abound of people who claim to have been cured by this latter-day prophet who has apparently discovered a potent mix of herbs and faith to produce a wonder drug that has thus far eluded modern medicine.

Is it true that this man can, and does indeed, cure hitherto incurable maladies, or is it that another charlatan has managed to exploit the proven gullibility of the Tanzanian public to make a quick buck?

Gullibility — if that is what it is — is in generous supply here, given declining educational standards, the absence of critical thinking to interrogate phenomena and a generalised desire to cut corners by riding on quick fixes, even if the last time a similar fad came to town it left many people sorrier and poorer.

We have had pyramid schemes which fleeced many of their savings.

We even have had such schemes which were buttressed by some theological mumbo-jumbo about it being a divinely sanctioned economic communion, but every time this kind of thing has happened lessons were there for anyone who wanted to learn. But it would seem as if learning is one activity we avoid at all costs.

Would we be justified to consider the Loliondo story a hoax by a sly conman or a group of them?

Such a thought need not necessarily suffer from the evidence of many senior people in government and ruling circles flocking to Loliondo, for superstition is intimately woven into our governance processes.

Questions have been asked but answers have not been forthcoming.

Why is it that we do not have solid testimonies of people who had proven clinical records and whose fortunes have been reversed by this miracle man?

Why does this bush scientist refuse his drug to undergo lab testing?

More curious was a plea from his assistant to the government for urgent steps to be taken to improve sanitation in the area to avert a disease outbreak caused by the uncontrolled human press. How could anyone with the powers to cure diabetes and HIV/Aids be worried about dysentery?

Still, one’s suspicions of fraud would be tempered by the paltriness of the fee this healer is charging, only Tsh500 (30 US cents).

Surely, that’s not what a man out to make a killing would charge. Only, I was thinking, if he receives a million visitors, the aggregate sum be a tidy sum.

Another thing: What if the real heist is not in the bush but in Arusha, with all the tour operators, the transporters, the caterers, the hotel and guest house owners and… the sex workers, a whole tourism industry built around an enigmatic former priest in the bush, dispensing herbal drinks while waiting for his cut from his Arusha-based principals and co-conspirators?
