Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) boss George Kinoti has been sentenced to four months at the Kamiti Maximum Security Prison for contempt of court.

This is after he failed to obey court orders that required him to return firearms confiscated from 2022 presidential hopeful Jimmy Wanjigi.

Mr. Kinoti is expected to surrender to the prison within 7 days failure to which, the DPP has been instructed to issue an arrest warrant against him.

The Director of Criminal Investigations, George Kinoti, was given 30 days in early 2021 by the High Court in Nairobi to return businessman Jimmy Wanjigi's firearms, as ordered in 2019.

The deadline for the DCI to comply with the orders was March 25, 2021.

In June 2019, Justice Chacha Mwita ruled that the State acted irrationally by seizing Wanjigi's firearms while he still had a valid license.

“The plaintiff’s rights were violated by the respondents. The actions of the respondents were unlawful and actuated by malice. The court grants orders that all firearms be returned to the plaintiff,” ruled Justice Mwita.

In 2017, police seized seven firearms from the businessman's home in Malindi.

The crackdown was linked to his close relationship with Raila Odinga's National Super Alliance (NASA), which ran against Jubilee in the hotly contested Presidential Election.

After DCI failed to return the firearms, Wanjigi filed a contempt of court proceedings. He wants them committed to civil jail.
