President elect Uhuru, Mudavadi in post-election pact

Amani coalition presidential candidate Musalia Mudavadi on Saturday threw his weight behind President-elect Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto in a deal that will give the Jubilee coalition a majority in the Senate and Parliament.

A total of nine political parties and a number of independent candidates were involved in the agreement which was signed at the President-elect's home in Nairobi.

Moments after the deal was sealed, an emboldened Mr Kenyatta announced that the Jubilee leadership was ready for a repeat election if the petition filed on Saturday by Cord coalition at the Supreme Court is successful.

"If the Supreme Court rules in our favour, we welcome our colleagues to join us so that we can move this country forward. But if they rule against us, then we are ready to go back to the people."

Mr Mudavadi, who came a distant third after Mr Kenyatta and Raila Odinga of Cord, said his move was informed by his pre-election pledge to accept the decision that would be made by Kenyans.

"I want to congratulate you for a deserved victory," said Mr Mudavadi. "We want to work with you; we do not want to create an unnecessary stumbling block as we move ahead."

Mr Ruto praised the partnership as one that puts Kenyans' interests before those of the leaders. "We have a national agenda that goes beyond any region, party, religion or creed," he said. "You have come to add impetus to that agenda."

Last year, Mr Mudavadi joined the Jubilee leaders after a deal was sealed on December 4, the last day of forming pre-election coalitions. Mr Mudavadi was to be the flagbearer and Mr Ruto his running mate. Mr Kenyatta was poised to be compensated by getting the lion's share of government positions for his "sacrifice".

However, the agreement broke down a few days later with Mr Kenyatta claiming that some "dark forces" had coerced him into the agreement.

"Yes, I signed the agreement after being compelled to do so by dark forces who claimed that a Kikuyu can't be elected and that foreigners will suspend aid to Kenya," he said.

A bitter exchange followed with Mr Mudavadi's side demanding that the coalition drop the name Jubilee, saying it was their brainchild.

However, a truce was later called with Mr Mudavadi forming a coalition with Kanu, naming it Amani.

Strong message

Mr Kenyatta on Saturday said Mr Mudavadi's move sends a strong message that leaders could work together after competing in elections.

But the move will keep political analysts busy in the coming days. From the word go, some saw Mr Mudavadi's bid as a strategic move by the Jubilee coalition to split the Luhya vote, which was considered a stronghold of Mr Odinga.

In Kakamega County, for instance, Mr Mudavadi bagged 144,962 votes against Mr Odinga's 303,120, while in Vihiga, the former polled 82,426 votes against the PM's 77,826. In Bungoma County, Mr Mudavadi scored 107,868 votes against Mr Odinga's 185,419.

The region overwhelmingly voted for Mr Odinga during the 2007 General Election.

In addition to Mr Mudavadi's United Democratic Forum, other political parties at Saturday's parley were the Alliance Party of Kenya (APK), Kanu, Ford People, New Ford Kenya, Kaddu Asili, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Muungano and Chama Cha Uzalendo (CCU).

The event was attended by Kiraitu Murungi of APK, Eugene Wamalwa of New Ford Kenya and Wavinya Ndeti of CCU, Omingo Magara of PDP and Henry Obwocha of Ford People. Kanu's Gideon Moi left Mr Kenyatta's home before the signing ceremony began.

Mr Wamalwa said: "I'm glad that we didn't take the battle to the streets."

But Mr Murungi told Mr Kenyatta not to worry about the petition. "In the legal profession, we look for the evidence, analyse it, then decide whether or not to go to court," he explained. "But they decided to go to court, then started to look for the evidence."

Mr Ruto said they are willing to join hands with Cord leaders once the court proceedings have been determined.

Deputy Prime Minister Musalia Mudavadi is said to have been given a go ahead by Amani alliance to start negotiations with President-elect Uhuru Kenyatta to be part of Jubilee government.

The deal includes Amani alliance principal and Justice minister Eugene Wamalwa's bid to negotiate for the position of Speaker in the post-election coalition.

Sources close to Mudavadi and Wamalwa told The Standard the DPM has stepped up campaigns to have Amani get Speaker of National Assembly post.

The coalition, on the other hand, is lobbying for Mudavadi to be appointed CabinetSecretary.

"It is not a secret that Amani alliance would not afford to be in the opposition. We have mandated Mudavadi to start negotiations with Uhuru with a view of having our team work with his government," said Boniface Otsyula, MP-elect Bumula.

He added: "We want to fight poverty and unemployment among other problems. We cannot do so if we are in the opposition, that is why we have agreed that we should give our numbers to Uhuru and we know in return our people will benefit."

The lawyer said they would appreciate if Jubilee team agreed to support Wamalwa as Speaker.

"If TNA and URP agree to rally behind Wamalwa as the Speaker, it would be gameshot with our numbers added to theirs," he added.

He said he was aware that it would not be easy but Wamalwa had a good relationship with Uhuru and Deputy President-elect William Ruto.

But according to the deal between TNA and URP sealed when the two parties were agreeing to form an alliance, the Speaker's seat would go to the former.

Agreed upon

Otsyula noted that the decision to have the negotiations between Amani and Jubilee start was agreed upon by all leaders elected under Amani alliance.

"This is not Mudavadi's decision. We sat as leaders and gave him the mandate to negotiate for our inclusion in the government," he added.

He noted that the mood in Western was that majority of the residents supported their proposal to be in Uhuru's government.

"We want Mudavadi to get one of the key ministerial positions because those are the only top appointments he can get as a politician," said Ayub Savula, Lugari MP-elect.

He added: "We have not agreed on which ministerial position but we want Mudavadi to get one of the lucrative ones in the deal to keep him at the top of political activities in the country."

Sabatia MP-elect Alfred Agoi said they would not work with CORD.

"The people we represent have nothing to benefit from our coalition with CORD because they would be in opposition and our numbers would not help us take control of Parliament or Senate," said Agoi.

Vihiga Senator-elect and Mudavadi's close ally George Khaniri confirmed that negotiations between the two alliances were going on.

smart move for the presidential losers. But, are they not closing the gate after the horse has bolted? Uhuru should demand that they sign an MOU that they will support his candidature next time around rather than being rivals waiting in the wings................

Nairobi, Kenya:
President elect Uhuru Kenyatta has committed that he is ready to seek fresh mandate from the Kenyan people if the Supreme Court doesn't uphold his victory.

Uhuru's spoke even as his Jubilee Alliance signed a post-election agreement with nine other political parties including UDF of Deputy Prime Minister Musalia Mudavadi.

"We are ready to go back to the people and seek fresh mandate. All we are saying is that there should be peace," Uhuru said during the signing of the pact at his home along State House Road in Nairobi.

Other political parties that signed the pact include Eugene Wamalwa's New Ford Kenya, Kiraitu Murungi's APK, Wavinya Ndeti's CCU and Omingo Magara's PDP.

Before the polls, Magara and Ndeti were allied to Raila Odinga's Coalition for Reform and Democracy (CORD).

Uhuru, however, warned leaders against inciting jobless Kenyans and university students from taking to the streets to protest election results.

He said that the agreement that they have signed with the nine political parties was part of unity and reconciliation that they promised Kenyans during their campaigns.

Uhuru said that the acceptance by Musalia to work with him was a strong message to the Kenyan masses that there is no need to fight each other.

"Musalia Mudavadi who was my competitor has agreed to work with us. This should send a very strong message to the people at the grassroots that there is no reason to fight each other," he said.
