Mbalamwezi: Careful when you say karume did the coup. The coup, and eventual "Revolutionary Government" is still a controversy, the group that did the Revolution, is not the one ended up ruling. And this happened during the peak of the Cold War (do you see images of the Americans, Soviet, Cuba, China... and Zanzibar was in the middle of these giants...)...Forget what you know from our primary school history lessons, that's all cooked. And this to me, is perhaps the root of the fuss we have today. The people in Pemba know this for a fact, and they are wondering why they are being forced into a revolutionaty govt that is not the one.
Zanzibar was never to escape this situation, it was just a matter of "who is the better devil" for a bedfellow. Zanzibar is still searching for its footing. Zanzibar wants to be finally free. Remember, as a country, it only lasted for only two months before joining Tanganyika, and well, you know the rest. Trust me, this was the longest time it could stay independent, many other "interested groups" were already closing in.
And who knows the secret between Karume and Nyerere? Even most Zanzibaris do not know. I dont know, and I can bet many in the government=CCM don't know either. Sources say the two were "very close friends". Their friendship brought us the goods and the bads.
The continued hesitance to deal with "bads" has taken us to this rough terrain.
With the now blunt Cold War (it never ended) focused elsewhere, and Tanganyika no longer adhering to socialism=communism, I don't see why the powers that be are holding up Zanzibar.
Let the Isles Loose... I have repeatedly said that Tanganyika has enough problems to focus on, this background noise is just diverting attention on core business.
