On Solomon as the archetype of magicians...
Here we have the demon Lucifuge Rofocale from a scan of an original edition of the Red Dragon/Grand Grimoire. Written in 1750, the Grand Grimoire is an instruction manual for conjuring 27 different demons, of which Lucifuge Rofocale is one, and the main focus of the book. The Grand Grimoire is a real book, and it's powerful, though it's not "written by the devil himself," or "locked away in the Vatican." The book itself is a part of a tradition of hundreds of books which were supposed to have been written by Solomon, or are connected to his magic in some way. In the Grand Grimoire there is a dialogue between the demon and Solomon that goes like this...
After having repeated twice these great and powerful words, you are sure to see the spirit appear immediately and respond in the following manner:
BY THE APPARITION OF THE SPIRIT
I am here, what do you ask of me? Why do you disturb my rest? Do not strike me any more with this terrible Rod. LUCIFUGE ROFOCALE
TO THE SPIRIT
If you had appeared when I called you first, I would
not have had need to strike you, but if you do not agree with what I am going to ask you, I will torment you eternally. SOLOMON
RESPONSE BY THE SPIRIT
Do not entertain me here and do not torment me
anymore: Tell me immediately what you ask me.
LUCIFUGE ROFOCALE
ASK OF THE SPIRIT
I ask you to come and speak with me twice every day of the week, during the night, to me or to those who will present my book, which you will agree and sign, voluntarily and at your choice of time that may be convenient to you, if you do not approve of those marked below:
To wit:
On Monday, at 9 PM and at midnight.
On Tuesday, at 10 PM and 1 AM.
On Wednesday, at 11 PM and 2 AM
On Thursday, at 8 PM and 10 PM
On Friday, at 7 PM and midnight
On Saturday, at 9 PM and 11 PM.
Further, I order you to deliver me the greatest
treasure near here, I promise you for your reward the first piece of gold or silver that I will touch the first day of each month. This is what I demand of you. SOLOMON
THE SPIRIT’S REPLY
I cannot agree to what you demand of me under these conditions nor on any others, unless you give yourself to me in fifty years, to do with your body and soul as I please. LUCIFUGE ROFOCALE
SAY TO THE SPIRIT
I will strike you and all your race, by the power of the great Adonai, if you do not grant all my wishes.
SOLOMON
CAUTION: Now plunge the tip of the Blasting Rod into the fire and repeat the great Invocation of the Key, until the spirit surrenders to your desires.
RESPONSE AND CONVERSATION OF THE SPIRIT
Do not strike me any more, I promise you to do all
that you wish, for two hours each night of the week.
To wit:
On Monday at 10 PM and at midnight, on Tuesday at
11 PM and at 1 AM, On Wednesday, at midnight and at 2AM, On Thursday, at 8 PM and at 11 PM, On Friday, at 9 PM and at midnight, On Saturday, at 10 PM and at 1 AM.
I also approve your book, and I give you my true
Signature on Parchment, which you will place at the end, to serve you in your need, I will submit myself also and appear before you every time that you call my name or when you open the book, being purified, and when you will have the terrible Blasting Rod, and have constructed the great Kabbalistic Circle, and when you will pronounce the Word ROFOCALE; I promise to appear in a pleasing
form to those who provide this book, where is my true signature, provided they call me in good standing and according to the rule, the first time that they have need ofme.
I promise also to deliver to you the treasure that you have demanded of me, provided that you keep this secret always, that you are charitable towards the poor, and that you grant me one piece of gold or silver on the first day of every month, if you miss this, you will be mine forever. LUCIFUGE ROFOCALE, Approved
REPLY TO THE SPIRIT
I agree to your conditions. SOLOMON
Note: There is a lot of magic in these words if you know how to read between the lines.
