New Railway cements Kenya's position as EA's transport hub

New Railway cements Kenya's position as EA's transport hub

SGR allocated Sh15.5bn ‘subsidy’ for operations

Kenyatta ameenda na bakuli China lakini akasahau kwaambia wachina kama jirani zake Waganda na wao wanataka reli. matokeo yake mchina kawakaukia Waganda eti mpaka kenya ione faida ndio itawakopesha, kwa maana nyingine Mchina ameshaaza kuona reli ya Kenya inaweza isizae matunda kutokana nchi ambazo Kenya ina zitegemea wameshaanza kufikiria plan B.

What rates do you have in mind?. Mombasa clears 1 million plus TEU equivalent containers. Ikiwa zote zitatumia madaraka express, hiyo hi ksh 50b kila mwaka. Passenger transport is simply a bonus. They can even be charged ksh 500 and the railway will still be profitable. Kwa hivyo in 8 years, we can repay the 327b loan in full.
You also seem to forget the added advantage of the railway, safety and time efficiency. Better transport infrastructure and cheaper power further enhances our desire to be a higher industrialized country.

TANZANIANS HAVE NEW BUSES AND KOT CAN’T COPE
Posted on May 11, 2016

By NAIROBI NEWS REPORTER

Tanzanians are a happy lot after their long-awaited Dar es Salaam Bus Rapid Transit (Dart) kicked off Tuesday with free rides until Thursday.

And envious Kenyans have camped on Twitter to mourn the transformation that is happening of Tanzania while Kenya seems to be mark timing.

After the two free days, commuters on the state-of-the-art will have to pay using specially made cards and barcodes, the two free days has seen the crews tests the electronic billing system.

Meanwhile, commuters will pay a maximum of Tsh800 (Ksh40) on using Dart.

When the system is fully operational, it will have 76 buses carrying between 80 and 140 passengers each. The Tanzanian government has already constructed 29 bus stations/terminals. The buses will operate for 19 hours every day from 5am.

Kenyans and Ugandans took to Twitter to show their disappointment with their respective Government for lagging behind Tanzania.

One Simon Wachira (@simonwachira) wrote, “Dar es Salaam Rapid Transit buses are here as Nairobi dithers with blocked sewers! After Ethiopia, there goes TZ!”

While MeshakM (@mesh1203) Asked Nairobi Governor @KederoEvans, “Dar buses and transport system. As usual you must have plans of similar or better.”

While Joshua Moturi kiky (@kikyjosh) from Uganda Tweeted, “Rapid transit (Dart) buses start operations in Dar Salam Tanzania, in another news 80% of taxis (matatu) in Kampala are classified as DMC (sic).”

Tahakabar Shaheed (@tahak2077) wrote, “Tanzania is on the move as we stagnate in Uganda… I used such buses in Dubai…”

RVR made a profit of $58million! And mind you the old rail is 122years old while tazara is less than 40years old.
Lets not forget even if Tazara has been able to make some profits in recent times, it has not been able to make more returns than the money that was used to build it 37 years later. So dont act smart here.. 50% write off on the loan and still tazara couldn't pay back even with all the copper that has come from zambia through Tz to China... You guys are a waste of space

Hizo hatutaki hapa Nairobi. World bank solutions applied in a blanket manner without consideration of different country peculiarities.
The bus rapid transport system can't work in Nairobi, maybe mombasa. Period. Light rail will do. A 20-40b investment. Easy to maintain, fewer accidents and no matatu can use the dedicated railroad. I hope our decision makers will reconsider this world bank prescription.

Don't forget there is a 1.5% levy on all goods imported through the mombasa port, that 1.5 of tax goes to an account that will be used to pay back the loan in addition to the profits that will be made from Jan 2018 when the rail begins commercial operation, instead of now where they are just doing it on trial basis inorder to gauge the demand and the service which will be used to determine the commercial pricing

Egyptian firm looks for buyers for 85pc stake in Rift Valley Railways

Barely two years after Kenyan equity firm TransCentury exited the KenyaUganda railway concessionaire Rift Valley Railways, the firm is again on the verge of a major change in shareholding, with reports indicating that Egyptian majority shareholder

Qalaa Holdings is looking for buyers. Qalaa is talking to several suitors with a view of selling either part or its entire 85 per cent stake in the concession that still has 17 years to go.

Signs that the Egyptian investor was reconsidering its investment in RVR first emerged in its report of the 2016 first quarter results where it classified the investment in RVR as “liabilities held for sale.”

According to the financials, losses from Qalaa’s discontinued operations stood at EGP93.9 million ($10.5 million) during quarter one with Rift Valley Railways contributing EGP68 million ($7.6 million) of that figure.

Where do you place fair compatition on what you've just elaborate here , your lowering the price to the point that your killing other competitors. The prices you've just mentioned are unsustainable because the running cost will outstrip the whole revenue. And not forgetting Kenya can not afford to run SGR alone bila nchi zingine kuchangia, hicho ndicho kinawaogopesha wachina. First they wanted to to raise fair to the acceptable level GoK wakakataa. They wanted to wait until waone the line is profitable Gok wakasema wanataka mkopo zaidi wafikishe reli Naivasha. Huku Joho anawasha moto vile your shifting jobs from coastal area to the mainland. More people are crying with SGR, ....RVR, trucker's, couches, clearing and forwarding etc.

Looming WB blacklist costs Rift Valley Railways US suitor

TUESDAY APRIL 18 2017

An American firm that was negotiating to buy Rift Valley Railways from Egypt’s Qalaa Holdings withdrew its interest in the deal after the World Bank signalled its intention to blacklist the rail firm over massive corruption that was revealed in an audit report last year, the Business Daily can now reveal.

Emerging Capital Partners (ECP), a private equity firm, terminated the negotiations after it became clear that the bank had decided to punish the company — instead of the directors linked with graft in the audit.

This makes it hard for any future owners to access funding from the World Bank or any other commercial lenders.

Sanctioning a company instead of individuals is usually undertaken where the particular malpractice was found to have been discussed and agreed at a full board level or with the knowledge of all directors, but this was not the case with RVR where specific individuals were found to have been complicit.

The World Bank’s decision came after a review of the rail operator unearthed a well-orchestrated corruption scheme, where executives bribed government officials, cooked books of accounts, evaded taxes, and created briefcase companies as corporate veils to squander a $22 million (Sh2.2 billion) loan from the International Finance Corporation (IFC) — the World Bank’s private sector arm.

The loan was to buy 20 locomotives in 2014 and 2015 but RVR officials devised a scheme to lease the trains at inflated costs from a third party and share the spoils.
