World leaders react with heartbreak and calls for change

As the world woke up on Wednesday to news of yet another mass shooting in the United States, global leaders responded with dismay, heartbreak and calls for action to end the violence.

Here are some of the reactions.

Pope Francis
“I am left heartbroken by the massacre in the elementary school in Texas. I pray for the children, for the adults killed and for their families,” the pope said after his weekly general audience at the Vatican, according to Reuters. “It is time to say enough to indiscriminate arms trafficking. Let us all commit to ensuring such tragedies can no longer take place.”

Emmanuel Macron, France
“Children and teachers were murdered in a cowardly attack in their Texas school. We share the shock and grief of the American people, and the rage of those who are fighting to end the violence,” the French president wrote on Twitter.

Olaf Scholz, Germany
“Our thoughts are with the injured and the bereaved of the victims of this inconceivable massacre for which hardly any words can be found,” the German chancellor wrote on Twitter.

Jacinda Ardern, New Zealand
“When I watch from afar and see events such as those today, I think of them not as a politician. I see them just as a mother and I’m so sorry for what has happened here. And then I think about what happened to us,” the prime minister said on “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert,” referring to the 2019 massacre at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, that killed 51. “When we saw something like that happen, everyone said, ‘Never again.’”

Volodymyr Zelensky, Ukraine
“Deeply saddened by the news of the murder of innocent children in Texas,” the president wrote on Twitter. “The people of Ukraine share the pain of the relatives and friends of the victims and all Americans.”

Naftali Bennett, Israel
“Israel mourns together with the American people the horrific murder of innocent children and teachers,” the prime minister wrote on Twitter.
