The National Police Service says it is investigating the death of top Pakistan journalist Arshad Shariff which has turned into a diplomatic nightmare between the two countries.
While sticking to the statement released by Magadi Police, NPS, in a letter signed by Police Spokesperson Bruno Shioso, expressed regret following the incident.
“NPS regrets to announce an incident that occurred last night along Kwenia farm/Kamukuru marram road within Magadi, Kajiado where a foreigner national namely Arshad Mohammed Shariff, a Pakistan national aged 50 years was fatally wounded by a police officer while a passenger in a motor vehicle KDG 200M. At the time of the incident, deceased was in the company of his brother Khurram Ahmed,” reads part of the statement.
Sharif was being driven in a vehicle by his brother Khurram Ahmed when they drove through a police roadblock along the Kiserian-Magadi road.
Shariff, 50, died after he was shot in the head by Kenyan police officers after going through a police barrier. Police claim his death was a result of "mistaken identity" as officers were pursuing robbers who had stolen a car in Pangani, Nairobi.
"It started when officers from DCI Starehe circulated a report of theft of a motor vehicle/abduction vide OB 70/23/10/2022 that one Douglas Wainaina parked his motor vehicle registration number KDJ 700F outside an electrical shop and left his son namely Dancan Kamau inside the said motor vehicle," reads the statement.
The officers sprayed the car with nine bullets and one hit the celebrated journalist killing him on the spot.
“National Police Service regrets this unfortunate incident. Competent authorities are currently investigating the incident for appropriate action.
The Ag. IG on behalf of the Service condoles with the family and friends of the deceased,” reads the statement.
His death has sparked a global uproar with Pakistanis led by their Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday telephoning Kenya's President William Ruto demanding a fair and open investigation into the shocking incident.
