Tundu Lissu: History Of Going For The Impossible And Getting It

A deep look at the man who is challenging incumbent Tanzanian President John Pombe Magufuli for the presidency. It is super fascinating that throughout his career he has gone for challenges that most people have told him are impossible to achieve. From the days when he dived head-fast into seeking the Singida East parliamentary seat in a region totally dominated by the ruling CCM party to his miraculous recovery and then his current mission to do what no other Tanzanian opposition has done in the history of the largest East African nation.

DODOMA, Tanzania — (AP) — Tanzania’s populist President John Magufuli has been declared the overwhelming winner of a second term amid allegations of widespread election fraud.
The national electoral commission says Magufuli received more than 12 million votes, while top opposition candidate Tundu Lissu received nearly 2 million. Turnout was less than 50%.
The ruling party also achieved the two-thirds' majority in parliament needed to change the constitution. Some in the party have called for the presidency’s two-term limit to be extended.

their initial report as Election Observers noted a number of issues that needed to be sorted and have recommend that Tanzanian government and Tanzania National Electoral Commission to deal with such matters according to the laws and constitution promptly.

Further more the observers noted the limitation to the access of internet, unequal airtime given to political parties participating in the 2020 election , arrest and detention of politicians, intimidation to journalist that prevented mass media access to ibformation are among things that made the whole of election process to be questionable.

The NGOs have failed to condemn President John Magufuli’s statements and actions that The irrelevance of NGOs in Tanzania
.

This led me to revisit 2007, when acclaimed legal and development scholar Professor Issa Shivji published a book, Silences in the NGO Discourse, which served as advice on how Tanzania’s NGOs can remain accountable. He wrote then that if the NGOs are to live up to their missions, which include ensuring democratic reforms in the country, then their entire strategy of engagement with the state would have to change radically. For example, in place of stakeholder conferences, there should be protracted public debates, wrote Shivji. Where previously the NGOs used to dialogue with the state “in five-star hotels,” now there should be demonstrations, protest marches and teach-ins in streets and community centers to expose serious abuses of power and bad policies. “Democratic governance would be an arena where power is contested, not some moral dialogue or crusade for good against evil, as the meaningless term ‘good governance’ implies … You cannot dialogue with power,” the renowned author writes poignantly.
