Cristiano Ronaldo moves up list of Europe's greatest ever goalscorers

The Real Madrid star was on the losing team on Sunday for the first time in 23 matches - but he did at least hit a personal milestone.

There's no doubt that Cristiano Ronaldo will have walked off the pitch on Sunday night a bitterly disappointed man.
Real Madrid's 2-1 defeat at the hands of Valencia brough Los Blancos' 22-game winning streak to an end - and the fact that the Portuguese star had scored a goal from the penalty spot early on will not have helped cushion the blow at all.
But to eagle-eyed stats-watchers, that goal was a crucial milestone: it moved the 29-year-old up to 287 career goals in Europe's 'big five' leagues.
That means that Ronaldo is now the joint sixth-highest aggregate goalscorer of all time across the top flights of England, Spain, Italy, Germany and France, having pulled alongside South African-born English star Gordon Hodgson.

And the way Ronaldo is going, it won't be too long before he hauls in the next man on the list: Argentine Ligue 1 legend Delio Onnis is just 12 goals away... while the immortal Dixie Dean's 310 goals is a surefire target for the rest of the season.

Beyond that, third-placed Steve Bloomer - from the early days of the English league - isn't far away on 317, but the big targets of Jimmy Greaves (366 goals) and Gerd Mueller (365) will have to wait until at least next season, and possibly even beyond.
Yet Ronaldo might not even get there first: Lionel Messi is just 30 goals behind, and being a couple of years younger is statistically likely to continue at the peak of his powers for longer. Even if Ronaldo takes the record first, it seems unlikely that he will hang on to it for anything like as long as the half century or so that Greaves has.

NEWS | 05/01/2015 | JAVIER GARCÍA

The Portuguese man has scored three goals in his two visits to the Vicente Calderón in this competition.

Cristiano Ronaldo will once again be the focal point in attack in the Round of 32 knock-out clash with Atlético in the Copa. The Portuguese talisman is especially prolific in derbies. Indeed, he has scored 14 goals against the rojiblancos. The teams have met in the Copa del Rey on five occasions with Cristiano on the pitch, with the forward finding the back of the net in four of those matches to rack up a total of five goals.

He was the star of the show when the sides crossed paths in the quarter-finals of the 2010/11 season. He scored one of his team's three goals in the Bernabéu in the 3-1 victory and got the only goal during the 0-1 return leg win in the Calderón. Then came the 2013 final, in which the Portuguese man got Madrid's only goal. He scored a brace from the penalty spot in Atleti's home ground last season to seal Real Madrid's passage to the final.

Toni Kroos: "Yesterday I received some gifts, today I want to give you one thing as a present: My official Instagram account "toni.kr8s" is online! So we have another opportunity to meet. Have fun!"

Roberto Carlos: "I don't care if Filipe luis (Chelsea) starts for Brazil or not, I'm fully convinced that Marcelo is the best LB in the world. No disrespect to Filipe."

Carlo Ancelotti has decided that Keylor Navas will be our first choice Goal-keeper in the COPA DEL REY till the end of that competition.

Summary of Carlo's press for crucial Copa Del Rey game against Atletico Madrid.
Carlo:
- "To beat Atlético you have to be firing on all cylinders"

-"We know each other very well and we know that it'll be difficult because they're one of the best teams in Europe.

-"Our approach to the game will be the same as always: we'll try to play to our philosophy, with intensity and quality, so as to be better than our opponents.

- We're going to field the best team possible. Keylor will play in goal in the Copa till the end of our campaign."

-"We're focused on the match at the Calderón. What happened against Valencia is in the past and now we're preparing well for this game.

-Bale? "I've watched the incident at Mestalla and it wasn't easy to pass the ball. He made the decision to try to score and I don't need to talk to him about that.

-Bale has scored goals in three of the four finals that we've played and the pressure he has is positive.

-"The team isn't tired. We've had seven days' holiday and we're in good shape physically.

-"I focus on my own team and on the problems that we have, and I don't look at what's happening at Barcelona. Every team has problems at some stage of the season.

-Luis Enrique's decisions?
Every coach makes their own decisions. He is the best-placed person to make decisions in his team, because he's the coach."
