It follows the execution by Nigeria's military government of the writer Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight other campaigners for the minority Ogoni tribe.
The announcement of the Commonwealth's tough stand was made by New Zealand's Prime Minister Jim Bolger. Greatly angered by Nigeria's blatant snub to international pressure, Commonwealth leaders had little option but to suspend the country from the association.
After discussions during what was supposed to be down time for the leaders, the decision was taken.

Commonwealth Heads of Government with the exception of the Gambia and Solomon islands agree to suspend Nigeria from membership of the Commonwealth pending the return to compliance of the principles of the Harare declaration.
They urge the Nigerian government to take immediate and concrete steps to adhere to these principles and offer whatever practical systems the government might request in this respect.
They call for the release of the 43 prisoners currently being held from involvement in an alleged coup attempt and the release of chief Abiola. They further decided that no demonstrative progress was made towards the fulfillment of these conditions within a time frame to be stipulated - Nigeria will be expelled from the association.
We spent time having a full discussion on the serious matter this afternoon with the participation of many heads of delegation and this was the conclusion of this discussion. It was a discussion that canvassed all the options there was, a sense of regret in the Commonwealth that we need to take such a step we would like to see Nigeria take the appropriate actions to enable the suspension to be lifted and for them to return to full membership of the commonwealth.
The attendance has been suspended and that means they do not have a role for the remainder of this CHOGM in terms of the movement of the delegation that is up to them of course but as the host government we will assist them in whatever way possible."SUPER CAPTION: Jim Bolger, New Zealand Prime Minister
