Govt planning to revive railway transport, PM

IN efforts to boost railway transport network in the country, the government has embarked on plans to revive the railway line from Dar es Salaam-Segera-Arusha through Moshi, the Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa told the House yesterday.

The move will also revive the Dar es Salaam-Tanga railway line whose construction work, according to the PM has already started.

He said the railway line from Mtwara-Tunduma-Bamba Bay in the southern part of the country has also been earmarked for construction to standard gauge railway.

Speaking during the impromptu questions and answers session yesterday, Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa said Dar es Salaam to Arusha line is expected to ease transportation of goods from Arusha, Tanga and Kilimanjaro regions to the port of Dar es Salaam as well as cross border transport to the neighbouring Kenya.

The PM told the House that last year experts surveyed the whole line to establish areas that were badly damaged during the rainy season. “The director general recently told me that they have reached Korogwe and soon they will be in Mombo area,” he said.

He remained optimistic that the activities will be completed soon to open the railway system in the northern zone.On the Mtwara-Bamba Bay line, the PM said feasibility study has been undertaken, adding that soon the construction will start.

He said the line will provide easy transport for coal from Ngaka, Liganga and Mchuchuma.“Let the residents know that the projects will soon start as part of the government’s efforts to boost the communication sector in the country,” he said.

The PM was responding to a question from Lushoto MP, Shabaan Shekilindi (CCM) who had wanted to know when the government would revive the two railway lines.

He argued that the government recently launched the Dar es Salaam-Mwanza-Kigoma standard gauge railway, an initiative that will improve transport system in that corridor but wondered why the other former railway corridors have been neglected in the plan.

“Is there any plans to revive the Dar es Salaam- Arusha railway line as well as Mtwara to Bamba Bay line ?” asked the lawmaker.

Hongereni Tz.

I like he's thinking style here. Way to go!

Tanzania has already started construction of the railway in two phases from Dar es Salaam to Morogoro covering 330km, and from Morogoro to Makutupora in Dodoma covering 426km, using locally sourced funds to the tune of about $3 billion, according to President John Magufuli.

This is first world class! hence signals how the end product will be like. I also hear the cost is minimal in relation to hwu hwa one of the other side.

Small firms ride on standard gauge rail to rake in millions
His firm Headstream Contractors Ltd, an SME, has been sub-contracted to conduct drainage and slop protection for Sh24.9 million, Herring Bourne skeleton protection at Sh25.5 million and stone pitching at Sh18 million.
Mr Ndeti’s firm is one of the several SMEs that bagged tenders related to the railway which is nearing completion.
“I have had to employ other 1, 950 suppliers in all sections assigned to me at the SGR. They supply sand, ballast and rock and 90 per cent of them are local. They comprise women, men and youth,” said Mr Ndeti in an interview with Money on Thursday.
The exposure of SME to large contracts has been made easier with the introduction of the e-procurement platforms that enhance the reach to all small businesses in 47 counties.

ndo maana our cost is half Kenya's. Kumbuka Tanzania is a mining country!
