The Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) made a Sh9.89 billion loss in its first year of operation, according to the latest figures from the Ministry of Transport.

Documents tabled by Transport and Infrastructure Cabinet Secretary James Macharia before National Assembly’s Transport Committee yesterday revealed that the Chinese-built railway averaged a monthly loss of Sh750.7 million in the 2017/18 financial year largely as a result of low cargo business.

However, the Government projects that the railway will make a profit of Sh5.08 billion between now and June next year, averaging Sh424 million earnings per month. “Part of the reason we made the loss last year was that it was a bit difficult to convince people that the railway was good for their cargo businesses,” said Mr Macharia.

“Also, we were in operation for only six months from June 2017 and we were only trying the waters.”

The SGR expects to haul close to nine million tonnes of cargo compared to 990,488 tonnes carried in the last financial year.

Macharia said if the SGR does not break even by the 2019/2020 financial year - when the loan repayment to the Chinese government is scheduled to begin - then the exchequer will have to pay from the newly established Railway Levy.

Kenya signed a Sh324 billion deal in May 2014 with China’s Exim Bank, comprised of Sh160.6 billion commercial loan and Sh163.4 billion concessional loan, to build the modern railway between Mombasa and Nairobi.

The loan, whose interest is 3.6 percentage points above the six-month average of London Inter-Bank Offered Rate (Libor) - which serves as an international benchmark - is to be repaid in 15 years.

Macharia said eight cargo trains were making daily trips to the Port of Mombasa, and the Government was aiming to have 12 trains at year end.

When questioned about under-utilisation of the cargo trains by Committee Chairman David Pkosing, with some of the wagons going back empty, the CS said the Government was in talks with major private sector players such as the Kenya Tea Development Agency and Unilever to see how the trains can be used in a more effective manner. The Government projects that SGR will turn in a profit of Sh15.8 billion in the 2019/20 financial year.

Sri Lanka issues in the making. Kenya will soon start crying like Sri Lanka.

There Must be something very wrong with Kenya's SGR, Even after forcing Importers to ferry their containers on the Rail they still make a loss of 10bn.

Revenue is not Profit... The company ge Technology[/URL] nerates a Revenue of 42 Billion Euros but after paying for the exenses, its profit is only $700m.. just imagin! 40, 000 trans running everyday, 500k tonnes ....generating a revenue of 42 freaking billion per year but the profits is only €700 million...

By the way, the company made a loss of €1.3 Billion in 2016..... The company also has a Debt of €20Billion, and it also recieves government bail outs every few years... and this is Germany we are talking about... one of the most industrialisedand the most efficient first world country... It is ranked number one by World bank in terms of logistics....

German rail operator Deutsche Bahn returns to net profit - documents
In January, Deutsche Bahn Chief Executive unexpectedly resigned after eight year in charge. The company has around 20 billion euros of debt and last year received a 1 billion euro injection of taxpayers’ money.

Anyway, Kuhusu SGR ya Kenya, miezi sita ya kwanza mizigo kidogo ilibebwa, hizo expenses zilitumika lakini mizigo ilikua kidogo, wanatarajia ku break even (expenses VS Profit) from next year ... SGR ni biashara kubwa ba kila biashara kubwa iko na expenses kubwa ... am not worried as long as cargo volumes continue to incease each month

Was making profit before loss then profit again. Stop being butthole! Why is KQ not making profit 10th year being bailed out?

I agree with those who are saying it's okay for a company to make loss in its infants stage; nevertheless, not to the tune of $ 100m. And to make matter worse, the aforementioned loss did not account other loses that have been incurred by other sectors due to the introduction of the SGR. Trust me, the problem is much bigger than what has been portrayed in the media by the Kenyan government. It shouldn't be a surprise that public officials are working their tails off to downplay the matter.

I don't think there is any other way to put this than to say the price of this project is the culprit. This project was overpriced and Kenyans are now up for a rude awakening! They don't have a choice but to pay for the inflated price or beg the Chinese to go back to the table and try to renegotiate some of the terms. It's sad to see people who were entrusted by their fellow citizens to govern the nation decided to put their personal interest ahead of the nation interest.

I also believe the loss is way bigger than what stated!

The project was financed by...Feasibility study done by...The SGR is being operated by...You don't have to be a rocket scientist to figure out that Wakenya Wamepigwa on this one. Sadly, they don't have anyone to blame but their corrupt and inept leaders. Apart from huge losses they have incurred, this project will also destroy the environment and put many wild animals' lives in immediate danger.
