A major problem with Tanzanian intellectuals like you, and the acolytes is, first allowing Marxism to shape your understanding of the world, particularly politics, history and economics.
The likes of Prof Shivji, have poisoned generations of students at the Hill, indoctrinating them, that JUCHE could work in Tanzania, enforcing the dictum of the rulling party, UJAMAA & SELF-RELIANCE.
This generation is a failure because of Intellectual parochialism. Mzee Nyerere's government and that after him, limited what students learn at schools. If it's not parroting Marx, Lenin, Mao, Castro, Nyerere, and The Modes of Production then no education.
To build a generation of critical thinkers, you must first allow Total Intellectual Freedom. Allow students to discuss and offend, without facing dire consequences. Allow them to be defiant, allow them to experiment, even the unpopular ideologies.
Meanwhile, in the Soviet Union, they banned liberal arts and everything capitalism, faculties and colleges in the UK and USA were full of Marxist scholars who debated their perspectives without facing consequences.
Tanzanian intellectuals, especially the Marxists from the Hill, UDSM, The Msekwas, The Kadumas, The Luhangas, you name them, failed this country. They turned the Hill, into an incubation center for obedient party Apparatchik, who only viewed the world through spectacles of Marxism.
Tanzania has smart and intelligent people, but unfortunately, they have a very limited scope in seeing the world. This is a Government Induced Selective Ignorance. So when such intellectuals debate, actually they have nothing much to offer.
I'm sorry to burst your bubble, but apart from speaking fancy English Tanzanian intellectuals cannot help this country navigate uncharted waters of current competitive world of capilism.
University education has to teach you defiance, enhance your purview of the world and help you reshape your surroundings. If these three objectives are not reflected within curriculum, then don't blame students.
That's why It's called University, because it comes from a root world "Universe".
Back, at college I was a Marxist, a staunch, Leninist. While my philosophy was applauded, my British Professors advised me to venture into other schools of thoughts and make a final decision, something which I did.
After, intensive study, I still respected Marxism but renounced it. I came to realize how poisonous and subversive it is, especially when it's an only philosophy fed to a younger generation.
Now, I wouldn't stoop low and get into your sophism and personality bashing. I'm simply too old for this. But I can simply tell you my point of view concerning the waves of changes from the 80s and 90s.
First, these protests were not only happening within college campuses. An entire country was swept by a wave of defiance. People were tired of Socialism, Poverty and Petty Dictatorship. A revolution started within The Military, the TISS, and endep up within Political Parties and College Campuses.
Secondly, Mwinyi released the doctors and reintroduced Multi-Partism, because of International pressure. Tanzania was under an Economic Shock Therapy, by the IMF and World Bank. So TZ had to choose between being stiff-necked, lose all the money, and become a pariah, or just act as normal people.
Believe me, if CCM had all the power, they would have crushed the heckling intellectuals at the Hill like bugs. China did this in Tiananmen Square in 1989, by killing hundreds of students.
America did the same to students protesting against a war in Vietnam. The US committed a massacre of innocents in her soil.
Tanzania would have done the same if it wasn't depending on the West for survival.
