Russian Troops Eliminate Group of 16 Ukrainian Soldiers in Kursk Region - Spokesperson

KURSK, Russia, (Sputnik) - A group of 16 Ukrainian military personnel of a separate mechanized brigade has been destroyed near the village of Kremyanoe in Russia's Kursk Region, a spokesperson for the Russian Ministry of Defense told Sputnik on Sunday.
"A group of 16 soldiers from the 225th Separate Assault Battalion of the 115th Separate Mechanized Brigade of the Ukrainian Army was destroyed near the settlement of Kremyanoe in the Kursk region. The elimination of the group was confirmed by target control footage taken by a copter [UAV]. The enemy unit was destroyed by Russian troops in the forest," the spokesperson said.

Russian air defense forces have destroyed a fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicle

MOSCOW, August 18. /TASS/. Russian air defense forces have destroyed a fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) over the Belgorod Region, the Defense Ministry reported.

"At about 7:25 a.m. Moscow time [4:25 a.m. GMT] on August 18, an attempt by the Kiev regime to carry out a terrorist attack using a fixed-wing UAV against facilities on Russian territory was thwarted. Alert air defense forces shot down a Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicle over the Belgorod Region," the ministry said.

Russian soldier smashes Ukrainian drone with rifle butt (VIDEO)


A Russian soldier apparently stopped a Ukrainian drone attack by smashing the incoming unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) with the butt of his rifle, according to a short clip published by the Telegram channel SHOT.

Footage shared by the channel on Friday showed a small UAV rushing towards a serviceman who was walking along a dirt pathway. The man can be seen promptly noticing the incoming danger and hitting the drone with his assault rifle. The UAV then explodes mid-air, producing a large plume of smoke.

The soldier is seen surviving the encounter, as he emerges from the smoke cloud before falling on the ground. He then gets back to his feet and runs away, as shots hit the ground around him. The Russian Telegram channel claimed that the soldier did not sustain any injuries during the encounter and is “alive and well.”

According to SHOT, the incident took place near the town of Chasov Yar in the Donetsk People’s Republic. The Russian military has not officially commented on the encounter or provided any information on the soldier or the location where it took place.

Some Russian media outlets reported that the man in the video was serving with the Akhmat Special Forces unit from Russia’s Chechen Republic.

US keeps fuelling conflict in Ukraine — presidential candidate

Jill Stein said that it is necessary to stop flow of weapons and funds that basically throw gasoline on the fires in Ukraine

WASHINGTON, August 18. /TASS/. By providing military assistance to Ukraine, the United States has been fuelling the conflict that cannot be won, said Jill Stein, who was approved as the Green Party’s US presidential candidate earlier in the day.

"We oppose the continued flow of weapons and funds that basically throw gasoline on the fires in Ukraine, this has been an unwinnable war from the outset. It is a war being fought to the last Ukrainian it is a war. It is a proxy war, specifically stated by the Secretary of Defense, who has said that this is a war intended to bleed down Russia's resources," she said, adding that the conflict "could readily have been avoided."

"This is a war which has been ginned up basically since the fall of the Soviet Union. At that time, the US and multiple countries, you know, basically guaranteed that NATO would not be moving one inch to the east following the reunification of Germany," she said.

In her words, "it only took a couple of years <…> for this promise <…> to be broken."

Commenting on the US role in the Ukrainian crisis, she drew parallels with the 1962 Cuban missile crisis.

"We regarded this as a terrible threat to have nuclear weapons near our border," she said. "And what we're doing is exactly the reverse of that. We're putting nuclear compatible missiles <…> on the border of Russia, within a few minutes of Moscow. So this is nuts," Stein explained.

She also noted that the United States "took the lead in dismantling several critical nuclear treaties, including the INF, the Intermediate Nuclear Forces Treaty," signed in 1987.

Stein, a 74-year-old physician and an environmental activist, was officially nominated as the Green Party’s presidential candidate for the upcoming election during a party convention on Saturday. Her running mate is Professor Butch Ware.

"We need to engage in basic diplomacy," Jill Stein said

WASHINGTON, August 18. /TASS/. The United States should immediately sit at the negotiating table with Russia, Ukraine and other stakeholders, said Jill Stein, who was approved as the Green Party’s US presidential candidate earlier in the day.

"We need to decompress this conflict as quickly as possible, and we need to get back to negotiations with Russia, Ukraine and other players. What Russia essentially wanted was neutrality from Ukraine. That is absolutely simple," she said at a new conference following her nomination.

"We need to engage in basic diplomacy. This is not rocket science. This is basic diplomacy. It's basic conversation that could readily avert a catastrophic conflict here," she added.

In her opinion the conflict "would readily have been averted had the US sat down to negotiate in advance" or "had the US not sabotaged the peace agreement that was established shortly after" Russia began its special military operation in Ukraine.

She also believes that the incumbent administration’s policy is, in essence, "the exercise of the military industrial military industrial complex and its intention to basically gin up business for itself by creating war, after war, after war. "And the American people need to put an end to it," she said.
