KYIV, Sept 2 (Reuters) - Loud explosions rocked Ukraine's capital Kyiv early on Monday as Russia launched a barrage of missiles, sparking fires and damaging homes and infrastructure, officials said.

The air force said it had destroyed 22 out of 35 missiles and 20 out of 23 attack drones. Those included nine ballistic missiles and 13 cruise missiles in the Kyiv, Kharkiv, Dnipro, Poltava, Mykolaiv and Zaporizhzhia regions.

WATCH Russian missiles wipe out Ukrainian armored column – reports

Footage reportedly shows over a dozen combat vehicles targeted by Iskander and rocket artillery strikes in Ukraine’s Sumy Region

Russian forces have conducted a coordinated strike against a large gathering of Ukrainian reserve forces across the border from Russia’s Kursk Region, according to new video shared on social media by military bloggers.

Hostilities have been ongoing in the border areas of Russia’s Kursk since Kiev launched a major incursion earlier this month. While Ukrainian forces continue their attempts to push deeper into Russian territory, Moscow has sought to push them back while striking rear targets in Ukraine's adjacent Sumy Region.

On Saturday evening, a new video emerged purportedly showing one such strike targeting a column of Ukrainian reinforcements south of the city of Sumy, approximately 40 kilometers from the Russian border.

Russian surveillance reportedly discovered the enemy's rear reserves earlier in the day but decided to let them accumulate to inflict maximum possible damage, according to the Telegram channel NgP_raZVedka, which first shared the footage.

The strike was reportedly launched at around 8pm on Saturday when up to 20 vehicles clumped together along a 600-meter stretch of road.

According to the surveillance drone footage, Russian forces conducted a combined strike, first hitting the column with two ballistic missiles, presumably Iskanders, equipped with cluster and high-explosive fragmentation warheads. Following that, the Ukrainian forces were apparently pounded by a salvo from a multiple launch rocket system.

The Defense Ministry has yet to officially confirm the latest strike. However, on Saturday morning, the Russian military reported the destruction of a “large warehouse with rocket and artillery weapons” in the same area.

In a video released by the Russian military, it was stated that the location was struck by a ballistic missile launched from an Iskander-M system, with the military claiming that surveillance confirmed “prolonged repeated detonations” at the facility and its subsequent “complete burnout.”

Ukraine’s Kursk gambit failed – Putin

Moscow will deal with the “Ukrainian bandits” who tried to destabilize the situation in Kursk Region, the Russian president said.

Ukraine’s incursion in Russia’s Kursk Region was intended to halt the advance of Moscow’s forces in Donbass but the move has failed to achieve this goal, President Vladimir Putin said on Monday.

He stated that Russia has been making great strides in key areas of Donbass, advancing at a pace that has not been seen in a “long time.”

“The Russian armed forces are taking control of territories not by 200, 300 meters at a time, but by square kilometers,” Putin said.

The president added that Kiev’s provocation in Kursk Region would inevitably fail and that Moscow would “deal with the Ukrainian bandits” who have entered Russian territory with the aim of destabilizing the situation at the border.

After that, Putin suggested, Kiev may come to realize that it needs to resolve the conflict through negotiations, and reiterated that Moscow has never refused to hold such talks.

However, the president noted that the Ukrainian leadership was likely not interested in ending the fighting, given that it would have to hold new presidential elections as soon as martial law in the country was lifted.

“The current authorities are clearly not ready for this, they have little chance of being re-elected,” Putin said. “That is why they are not interested in ending the fighting, that is why they tried to carry out this provocation in Kursk Region, and before when they tried to carry out the same operation in Belgorod Region.”

Meanwhile, Russia will continue to protect its people in Donbass, as well as “our common future, the future of Russia,” the president said, adding that Moscow “cannot allow hostile structures to be created right next to us that hatch aggressive plans against our country and constantly try to destabilize the Russian Federation.

According to Moscow’s latest estimates, the incursion has proven costly for Kiev’s forces, which have lost more than 7,800 servicemen, 75 tanks, and over 500 armored vehicles since the start of the operation on August 6.

Ukrainian military blames Zelensky for battlefield setbacks – FT

Soldiers are criticizing the leadership in Kiev for allowing Russian forces to make rapid advances in Donbass, according to the outlet

Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky has reportedly come under a “barrage of criticism” from his own soldiers, lawmakers and military analysts after Russian forces managed to make rapid advances in Donbass and push back Kiev’s troops, the Financial Times claimed on Friday.

According to the UK outlet, due to Kiev’s incursion into Russia’s Kursk Region earlier this month, which involved the redeployment of thousands of Ukraine’s most battle-hardened troops, many of its forces fighting in the Russian Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) have ended up being stretched thin and have been struggling to hold their ground.

Kama kuna mwenye taarifa zaidi naomba ashee hapa. Sidhani kama Putin anaweza kuigonga Kursk na ma FAB. Yale madude sio ya kawaida aisee
