Russian forces have shot down three Ukrainian fighter jets over the last 24 hours, the Defense Ministry in Moscow has said.

Two Sukhoi Su-27 aircraft operated by Kiev were destroyed by the Russian Aerospace Forces, while Russian air defenses have shot down a Mikoyan MiG-29 plane, the ministry said in its daily update on Sunday.

During the same period, the Russian air defenses also intercepted a US-made HIMARS rocket, four French-made Hammer guided bombs, and 55 drones, it added.

Over the past 24 hours, Ukrainian forces lost more than 2,200 troops along the front line and dozens of units of various equipment, including several US-made M777 towed artillery pieces and British L-119 howitzers.

Deadly shelling in Ukraine's Pokrovsk as Russia gains ground​


Russian shelling killed one person in the eastern Ukrainian city of Pokrovsk on Sunday, local authorities said, as Moscow's troops inched closer to the key logistics hub.

Ukraine has strong military reasons for conducting deeper strikes into Russia using Western weapons, according to Admiral Rob Bauer, a senior NATO military official and head of the Military Committee of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, as quoted by Reuters.

Bauer emphasized that under the law of armed conflict, a nation’s right to self-defense extends beyond its borders.

However, he also pointed out that countries providing weapons have the right to impose restrictions on their use.

‘From a military perspective, such attacks are intended to weaken the enemy, not only to defend against incoming strikes but also to target the source. The goal is to disrupt the enemy’s logistics, fuel supplies, and ammunition headed to the front,’ Bauer explained.

He added that the debate also has a political dimension, as countries supplying the weapons feel a responsibility for how they are used, leading to ongoing political negotiations.
